Zappa, Frank - Later That Night Lyrics

[includes a quote from Glory Of Love (Hill) by The Velvetones]

You surely must be trying
To break this heart of mine
I thought you knew I loved you
And we'd share a love so fine

But later that night
(You threw a) padlock on my door
(My) clothes out on the street
('Cause you) don't want my love no more

And I cryyyd
I-I-I cryyyd
Oh, I cried
(I cried)
My heart out
Cried
(I cried)
My heart out
Later that night

You surely must be trying
To break this heart of mine
I thought you knew I loved you
And we'd share a love so fine

But later that night
(You threw a) padlock on my door
(You threw my) clothes out on the street
('Cause you) don't want my love no more

And I cryyyd
I-I-I cryyyd
I cried
(I cried)
My heart out
Cried
My heart out
Later that night

[Spoken]
Don't go baby, don't put me out on the street. You threw my best sharkskin suit out on the lawn, right on top of some dog waste (I hold in my hand three letters from the stages of your fine, fine, super-fine career...) and my best white shirts with the Mr. B collar laying all over the front lawn. Where's my cuff links? Lemme back in dere. Dere? Ha!

"Huffa puffa, Huffa puffa
There's no room to breathe in here"

"That's alright honey. You can come out of the closet now"

Zappa, Frank Later That Night Comments
  1. J.... 3....

I remember riding around with my friends in an old 59 chevy in 69 listening to this on 8 track tape, all stoned and laughing our asses off on every song, high as kites

Such a fine album. Zappa's remixes for the CD release were so disappointing to me. I just love the weird slapback reverb on the drums and the dry vocals right in your face on the original. Genius!

    Y.... B....

Maybe it's mostly a nostalgic deal for me, but I gotta agree! The cd version snuck in some real spiffy drums underneath the original, but it loses directness and the dripping w/ personality talking and vocals, (it's especially noticeable near the end on this track).

    Great vocals

  4. L.... ....

I fuck you and I love you and we shared love so fine. Beautiful melody sad romantic

My favorite song on the album. I loved Ray Collin's improvised speaking parts "....and my best white shirts with the Mr. "B" collar layin' all over the front lawn..." This was the album where Ray Collins got to really show off his vocal skills. He didn't like doing the weird avant-garde stuff and quit the band but Zappa got him back for this album. I think Zappa felt he needed to showcase a talent like Collins because of their past relationship. Collins was the first guy Zappa met in the early days to start the Mothers. I loved everything that Collins did, especially songs like "Cruising for Burgers" and "Dog Breath" on "Uncle Meat."It's a tragedy that Collins faded away after the 1970's. Zappa had him on a few songs during that time and then disappeared.I read a story he was a dish washer in Hawaii in the early 2000's and died a few years later.

No remorse,no crying, just remember the good things!

The original masters were damaged by water, therefore the remix and new vocal and some guitar work for the remastered CD. :0(

  10. F.... ....

Zappa is listed on the linear notes as "Frank Zappa – low grumbles, oo-wah and lead guitar (also drums, piano, bass)"

I had this album and I searched the whole thing looking for Frank's name on it and I was amazed that he was't listed. Just some guy in a Mad Magazine like cartoon edge drawing puking over the edge. Did I miss it in the credits for the musicians?

  18. C.... ....

@ghellogm I know. I was just updating the information.

  19. C.... ....

@IncaRoad01 Frank wasn't happy with the way the album turned out, and since some of the masters where damaged, he took the opportunity to remaster them, irregardless of how bad they where actually damaged.

  20. C.... ....

@ghellogm Actually, about a month back, it was re released under the name "Greasy Love Songs."

  21. H.... D....

Had to listen to all of Cruisin - it's been so long. Remember what it said on the cover: " Is this Frank Zappa's last attempt to get in the Top 40?" Such a great album. Thanks for posting!

  22. I.... ....

Yep - I have both versions of Were Only in it For The Money (including the version with Lumpy Gravy). Incidentally, that particular copy has been signed by Jimmy Carl Black!

Anyhow, I had never heard the original version of Cruisin' With Ruben & The Jets ... I have to say, I think the original recordings sound better and more appropriate for the style.

    I.... ....

IncaRoad01 I'll see your signed album and raise you the booklet insert to Uncle Meat signed by Cal Schenkel!

IncaRoad01 I knew JCM my sister was dating his first wife’s brother we would go up to Canoga park in the late 60s and hang out and I would tag along. he and his wife were so down to earth and nice. They had several kids. you’d never know he was a famous drummer. I remember he had painted every piece of his pipes in his old basement a different color. It was a large old wooden house on a large piece of property back then Canoga park was still kinda of rural.
    RIP JCB

  23. I.... ....

So very very different to the version released on the Rykodisc CDs... what happened? This is so much clearer.
