Zac Brown Band - Junkyard Lyrics

I have lived in a junkyard,
Where the weeds eat up the rain
If you get anything there, even out of place
You know there's hell to pay

And he said, "You're as sick, as you are lovely,
And in need of a hand"
He tells me, "You are never worthy"
But I was just a child, you see
That's my reality

He had a sick little girl, dirty and harmed
With a breast plate made of metal
She drives all day in a rusty Buick
And her feet don't reach the pedals

Got a jar of flies, a father's disguise,
Where his heart should be
A mouth is sown together
She screams with those eyes
(She screams with those eyes)
She screams with those eyes

She's as sick, as she is lovely
And in need of my hand
He tells her, "You are never worthy"
She was all alone, you see
That was her reality

Yeaaaah...
Well I've shoulda been sleepin', shoulda been dreamin'
But I wake up to broken glass
There'll be one more empty desk in my homeroom class
I got an old bone pocket knife, tight in my right hand
To save my poor mother from the junkyard man

And I say, "He's as sick as he is lovely,
And in need of a hand"
He will know he's not worthy
When he dies alone you'll see
That's his reality

I'm not sick, I am lovely
And hatred is the curse of man
And I will not feel unworthy
Cause I've washed my hands, you see
That's my reality, yeah

  5. T.... S....

So WHERE THE FUCK DID THIS COME FROM? Since when does The Zack Brown Band make what sounds like some kind of blend of Stoner Rock and Country?? This almost has some Doom Metal mixed in with it.

  16. S.... E....

    ho...ly......fuck

  17. K.... F....

I don't see a boy at all. Just the girl, her mother and abusive father. Th narration just moves around a lot.

  18. R.... N....

Wow? Made me feel awful, creepy, but what a band right? If this isn't speaking from experience ....Not sure what to make of this whether its coming from a victim or sadistic pleasrurisrt? Can't get into it its a bit sick

  19. A.... ....

Beginning sounds like Black Woods by Stoned Jesus, but this is badass.

  20. W.... P....

they wouldn't dare play this on a country station cause it isn't about girls, beer, trucks, or moonshine kisses. this song is too awesome for the radio anyway. let's keep it between the true fans

    W.... P....

Warren Peay its a rock sojg, thats why it isnt played on country radio.

    W.... P....

There is such a thing as country rock though

    W.... P....

Warren Peay its an awesome song i heard it on the country station. Lotta good deep/ meaningful songs like this seem to be played on there🌻

    W.... P....

Warren Peay or maybe because it’s rock, not country 🙄

  21. B.... F....

Good song I love the song

  22. F.... _....

I could see myself doing a cover of this on a 7 string guitar and vocals.

    F.... _....

thelittlest potato do a hardcore punk cover, the angst in the song is just begging for it

  23. r.... ....

Anyone else hearing Man in the Box in the beginning? Also, he mentions "Jar of Flies" in a verse. Coincidence or was it an homage to AiC?

  24. A.... ....

Feels like im in a VR headset

  25. C.... W....

The best I can tell, it's about domestic abuse. The boy is him. The girl is his sister. The Junkyard man is the father. He abuses them both. The thing about the sewn mouth and screaming, a lot of times, the abuser will threaten the life of their victim if they tell. So she uses her eyes to tell her story. Near the end, it talks about waking up to broken glass. That tells me that the mother and father were fighting. He has an old bone pocket knife to save his mother from the junkyard man. Meaning, in order to save his life and his families, he's going to stab and kill his father. They escape. The father dies alone. That's his reality. At the "I'm not sick. I am lovely. Hatred is the curse of man. I've washed my hands you see. That's my reality." Once he escaped. He forgave his father for years of abuse. Hatred is worthless. He cleansed himself of his past. Domestic abuse is a real issue nonetheless. Once you escape it, you have a choice. You can either play the victim for the rest of your life or you can cleanse yourself of your past and not let it define who you are as a person now.

    C.... W....

This is about him and his mother in a domestic abuse situation

    C.... W....

Steve Wood you'll find most songs have a story behind them

    C.... W....

No you dont lol Zac has told that story on TV many times, keep dreaming

    C.... W....

    Steve Wood 🤯

    C.... W....

@Ryan Fairclough most country songs do. not so many rap and pop in my opinion

  26. T.... M....

    good song for WWE 2K17

    T.... M....

they could use it for Luke harper when he returns

  27. G.... S....

when he talks about the girl with her mouth sown shut is he talking about his sister or mom and what is the dad doing to her

  28. V.... P....

Do these guys have any other songs of this style - heavier rock type? Sounds good.

    V.... P....

    Heavy in the head

    V.... P....

They've also done covers of some other songs

  29. S.... R....

do they play this song on the tour they're on right now?

    S.... R....

    +Steven Robertson I hope so

  30. J.... S....

This is a great song, but the tail of it is even better, and It would be nice if they stretched it just a little longer.

    J.... S....

    there's a 7min version lol

    J.... S....

    I'll look it up then!

  31. R.... F....

" Her mouth was sewn together" and " I had I bone knife tied in my right hand" and " I wake up to broken glass" you know just everyday creepy.

  32. D.... P....

Well, I was raised underneath the shade of a Georgia pine
And I have lived in a junkyard, where the weeds eat up the rain
    And that's home ya know
My house is not much to talk about

It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most
Not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes
He had a sick little girl, dirty and hard, with a breastplate made of metal
She drives all day in her rust heap Buick, and her feet don't reach the pedals

Got a jar of flies, her father's disguise where his heart should be
I like to feel the sunrise, see the love in my woman's eyes
Her mouth is sewn together; she screams with those eyes
Yeah, she screams with those eyes...like our chicken fried

Well, I shoulda been sleeping, shoulda been dreaming, but I wake up to broken glass.
There's no dollar sign on peace of mind, this I've come to know.
There'll be one more empty desk in my homeroom class.
So, if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast.
Got an old bone pocketknife tight in my right hand
To save my poor mother from the junkyard man.

I thank god for my life. He's as sick as he is lovely, and in need of a hand
He will know he's not worthy. When he dies alone you'll see, that's his reality.
Salute the one's who died. Hatred is the curse of man.

I will not feel unworthy, 'cause I have washed my hands you see
For a little bit of chicken fried
Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fits just right
And a radio, oh you see
    That's my reality.

    D.... P....

    horns up

    D.... P....

    Chicken Fried sucks

    D.... P....

That's perfect combination of those two great songs

  33. B.... C....

Zach Brown, stay Down! U are the man

  34. T.... B....

The full 7 minute version is much better IMO

  35. B.... C....

Roger Barnes in case u were curious Jim

  36. B.... C....

Sorry Zach I had too. But I stayed PC? Right

  37. B.... C....

And Jim Plays Guitars. Don't worry brother, he never turned his back on you or country, it's u that turned your back on Zach Brown. Country is still alive and well. On" the Voice" and I'm wondering if your still eating that same PB and J sandwich for lunch everyday u work..... Expand or Contract but don't put ur thoughts on blAst, about art. When obviously your stuck in a rut......

  38. B.... C....

Oh yeah check my stuff out too🤔

  39. A.... M....

Didn't even really care for this band until I heard this song👌🏻✨

  40. s.... g....

if anyone watches GATE "" its a anime series... is it just me or the ending of the song sounds a bit identical.. xD

  41. C.... D....

    Great song

  42. Z.... p....

I love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have the album Jekyll + Hide and it is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. M.... C....

Zac Brown is number 1 in my book for being able to pull of different genre's so well. Hard Rock here, religious over there, and a bit of country here and there. LOVE IT.

    M.... C....

+Linda Downs Don't forget about the pop in the corner.

    M.... C....

    Love it.

    M.... C....

also dont forget about that sir rosevelt shit

  44. R.... ....

My father and sister both love Zac Brown and listen to him incessantly. Overall I've liked some of his stuff but not too much mostly because I'm not a country guy. But this song... Fantastic. This is where me and my family really find a common ground. Hope he keeps doing stuff like this.

  45. a.... f....

    this song is about abuse?

  46. C.... M....

    love the vibe

  47. S.... M....

The first version of "Junkyard" was so much better. Way too much production!

  48. U.... G....

i feel like listen to Alice in Chains

  49. T.... S....

went to his concert in Columbus was hoping to hear this song!! He didn't play this song or heavy.. but it was a awesome concert

  50. E.... Z....

such an eloquent song....should be the sound track to a Mad Max Movie...My fav on the album!

  51. m.... m....

Man I love this song!!! Keep up the good work guys👍🏻

  52. H.... W....

this is almost the best song he has ever made but we all know the best is chicken fried

  53. g.... ....

I'm a metalhead through and through, so obviously I HATE countru music. But I was listening to the radio one day and heard this and the lyrics grabbed me. I love it! Deep and dark, just the way I like it

    g.... ....

    Its Swamp Rock, hombre.

    g.... ....

I wouldn't assume a metalhead hates country. I listen to both and love both

  54. N.... K....

I am not a country guy. At all. And this song is a masterpiece.

    N.... K....

this song is more rock, I think that's why you like it if you don't really country

    N.... K....

+Haily Warren eh it is but it isn't.. zac brown is a lot like dave matthews. he knows how to blend genres. good music isn't specified by a certain genre, but how the artist feels :)

  55. K.... W....

This is the best country song ive heard in a long time! Should b in rock genre

    K.... W....

+Penny Grames It's the second Rock Radio single from Jekyl and Hyde.

  56. B.... C....

When I think of Zac brown I think of jimmy buffet type music and the happy gulf coast.. Not this..

  57. C.... M....

Their going into rock music. Their still awesome!

  58. K.... B....

this is not zac brown band....

    K.... B....

+Kevin Burnett Actually it is and was written many years ago. It is on their live Album Pass the Jar with Richie Apparol singing Zac's parts and Zac singing John Driscoll Hopkins part. It was silently different but every bit as heavy and hard.

  59. J.... W....

listen to shamans harvest on here people for a great underrated band

  60. N.... B....

maybe I was wrong bout the zac Brown band

    N.... B....

    you where d

  61. A.... A....

reminds me of Michael myers a little bit

  62. s.... d....

heard this on the radio today, no idea who it was, what the song title was. found it... super impressed there's new music out there that hits me like this. love it!

  63. C.... L....

Is it just me, or Peter Dreimanis from July Talk sings in the chorus ?

  64. F.... S....

They left out the instrumental sequence in between the second refrain and the third verse. I always felt that that was the most powerful and dark part of the song.

    F.... S....

Yeah because they ripped that part off from pink floyds "anybody out there" from the wall

    F.... S....

+tyler Stotz they didn't rip it off that's the actual sequence. it's credited on the album

    F.... S....

Thats because the instrumental is a Pink Floyd song

  65. D.... P....

lyrically dynamic. The music is powerful and matches the message. You choose to not be a victim, to not believe what an oppressive abuser does to you and to know that some of the most beautiful creations grow from very ugly beginnings.

    D.... P....

I'm not sick I am lovely

  66. E.... ....

    Damn good song

  67. R.... B....

Love this song!! sounds almost like a little alice in chains mixed with some corrosion of conformity with a silverchair guitar sometimes!! Cant believe its the first time Ive heard it.

  68. M.... L....

Ok, i have a question. Zac said this is a song about redemption. How so? Because he killed his father? Someone please answer

    M.... L....

    +Robby Boggus but how?

    M.... L....

    Zac Brown killed his father?

    M.... L....

+Pekka _ Rinne35 because of the abuse? I know the songs not really based on zac though

  69. D.... P....

    Sick song

  70. R.... ....

I don't know why but when I hear this song, it makes me think of horror movies like Silent Hill, Wrong Turn, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The imagery and lyrics of this video make me think of those movies for some strange reason.

    R.... ....

Well I can see wrong turn maybe, but the songs actually about child abuse.

  71. r.... ....

    that is so damn sick!!

  72. A.... ....

this should have more views ya'll

  73. b.... n....

    disappointed :/

    b.... n....

if your just disappointed that's it not country you need to realize it's not always going to be country

  74. S.... S....

    34 morons detected!! 😡

    S.... S....

no one asked for your opinion next time you got an idea like this instead just drink bleach so the rest of a favor did the filth!!!

  75. B.... ....

Second song on rock radio and I approve whole heartily! Zac Brown knows what good music is!

  76. M.... M....

download choices would be a nice option

  77. S.... T....

Serious Thrice vibes of this one!

  78. Z.... S....

I've found it interesting how the best original songs, lyrically, on "JEKYLL + HYDE" happen to be their rock-heavy releases.............when country has traditionally been the lyrically-centric genre and rock the more groove-oriented one. If this and "Heavy Is The Head" are any indication, they should use those songs as inspiration for improving their lyricism on subsequent country recordings.

Even though I prefer earlier renditions of this more preceding their major-label breakthrough "The Foundation", this is still a damn well-written song with a visceral gut-punching payoff. Definitely better than at least 90% of what currently congests Active Rock radio. I'm actually hoping the Zac Brown Band succeed in continuing to develop themselves as a staple act of the format so they can begin to make Active Rock consistently listenable for the first time since the Black Crowes and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers stopped picking up consistent Top Ten hits in the mid-to-late 90s.

  79. S.... C....

I love this song to death, in fact it might be my favorite on the Jekyll & Hyde album but they totally shortened the lyric video!!! The jam out musical solo's are sooooo good on this song and they shouldn't be cut off!!!

    S.... C....

@Summer Coleman possibly a radio cut?

  80. L.... T....

I love this song so much, it is by far my favorite of theirs

  81. J.... S....

Lyrically, their best song by far.

  82. E.... M....

Holy shit this is by far the best song on this album. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. The lyrics are haunting and dark. I am digging the grit and the hard rock side of this song. Totally blown away by this one. Absolutely amazing.

    E.... M....

You have any idea what it means. I'm lost lol

    E.... M....

KrampusPlague it's about a kid living with his mom and a step dad/boyfriend that is abusive. At least that's what I took from it.

  83. S.... K....

What are they a heavy metal band now

    S.... K....

@Scott Kalen This isn't heavy metal it's hardrock. And they have always said since day one that their is a lot of southern and hard rock influence in their sound.

    S.... K....

+Erin McNally plus they had Overnight on the other album too. That's exactly why I love them. They play whatever the hell they want. Whoever said you had to have all the same type of music on a cd? I completely agree.

  84. A.... B....

Zac if you guys are gonna be making remakes of songs. You should do a remake of "on this train" and put it on an album so it is available on iTunes. I have been a zac brown since I can remember and when I met you at the eat and greet I told you this then. This songs has been my favorite song since I first started listening to you guys.

    A.... B....

@Alan Barwick This isn't a cover or "remake" they wrote it.

    A.... B....

@Erin McNally It's a remake of their own song...

    A.... B....

+Erin McNally I'm aware of that. Their original version is better than this version

    A.... B....

So is "on this train" guys. I think he meant if they're going to be redoing their songs.. As in making them harder.. Anyway.. That song would be great to amp up. And as far as this one goes, I like them both. The first as far as beat, but I like the instruments used in this and where they were taking it.. I just wish they would've stayed a little more towards the original.. There's just a few pieces that need adjusting

  85. A.... B....

I personally like the live version better

  86. L.... H....

Seriously Jekyll & Hyde haha I did not expect that

  87. Y.... ....

I am an avid ZBB fan but i have to say that i wasn't too impressed with this one.

    Y.... ....

i'm fully supportive of them branching out and i love the new album. its just this particular one that I don't care for. thank you for not hating

    Y.... ....

@Yanley If you're an avid ZBB fan, you should know that this isn't a new song. A live version was on the Pass the Jar album. And just a suggestion...because you're certainly entitled to your opinion...but you should look into the meaning of the lyrics. You might just change your mind. :)

    Y.... ....

@tam o oh i just meant i love the new album because it offers a lot of different types. and i'm definitely not saying the lyrics are bad, just not my style

    Y.... ....

have you herd the live version of this song

    Y.... ....

Thats because you dont appreciate real music, Zac wrote this when he was 14

  88. E.... H....

I really love how they are doing rock type songs!

  89. m.... ....

The whole Pink Floyd's "Is there anybody out there" sample was removed. My favorite part

    m.... ....

@markemark513 Why did they get rid of that? That would have made this song a million times better than it already is.

  90. J.... I....

My favorite ZBB song! I love how this video is fitting to the words; grungy and dark, and not "prettied up". Great job guys!!!

  91. R.... G....

best song ever!! y'all need to come to Louisiana soon!!!!

  92. p.... w....

Will this be played on the country or rock stations or both?

    p.... w....

    probably rock

  93. C.... ....

Absolutely brilliant song, love this band so much

  94. M.... L....

They cut out the best part. Hope they release this to the rock stations and another on country radio

  95. A.... M....

Is it in the new album?

    A.... M....

Yes, but it is much longer

  96. l.... s....

    Wow that's powerful

  97. N.... S....

    Oh hell yeah.
