Young, Neil - Who's Gonna Stand Up? Lyrics

Protect the wild, tomorrow's child
Protect the land from the greed of man
Take out the dams, stand up to oil
Protect the plants and renew the soil

Who's gonna stand up and save the Earth?
Who's gonna say that she's had enough?
Who's gonna take on the big machine?
Who's gonna stand up and save the Earth?
This all starts with you and me

End fossil fuel, draw the line
Before we build one more pipeline
End fracking now, let's save the water
And build a life for our sons and daughters

Who's gonna stand up and save the Earth?
Who's gonna say that she's had enough?
Who's gonna take on the big machine?
Who's gonna stand up and save the Earth?
This all starts with you and me

Damn the dams, save the rivers
Starve the takers and feed the givers
Let's build the green and save the world
We're the people known as EARTH

Who's gonna stand up and save the Earth?
Who's gonna say that she's had enough?
Who's gonna take on the big machine?
Who's gonna stand up and save the Earth?
This all starts with you and me

A banal and cynical fact-free adventure in leftist, collectivist guilt promotion. It sounds like the CIA doesn't have any good songwriters in their controlled opposition department like they had back when 'ole Neil was a cultural icon. Amazing arrangement though!

You can go and fuck yourself neil young.Sing your senseless garbage to those who really pollute the earth and oceans.Carbon tax in the west will never prevent indonesia to dump their daily 1000's of tons of their garbage into the oceans or the africans and hindus(almost 3 billion ppl)dump their beloved diesel motor vehicles. If the microbeads are aleady in the human bloodstream through fish, why are they gonna be banned in years and not immediately?Libz banned the thin plastic bags that can break down in soil in a year and now sell plastic bags 5x thicker to make sure to staff and pollute soil with them a lot longer but the best one,i heard on the news that black plastic can NOT be recycled, then why the fuck we're still making them?We need bans, not carbon tax.Shit-for-brain LYING liberals.Always lie.

While letting his diesel busses run for hours during concerts, LOL. Stand up to oil? You are burning more than all of the rest of us put together. Typical to point the finger while doing more damage all these years.

I think Neil's song is as brilliant as many of his other classic songs, and surprised to see all these negative comments here! Neil is someone who is standing up to protect the Earth and we need far more people to be doing so and as quickly as possible! I also think he is to be really admired for writing and performing protest songs when it seems like no one else is doing so! I am following in his footsteps and just recorded a song about plastic pollution entitled Where Does All The Plastic Go? https://www.reverbnation.com/bardofely/song/29514495-where-does-all-the-plastic-go

Absolutely love this!!  We are fighting against a mega dump in Ingersoll ... for Toronto (and Ontario) trash!!  This dump will be in a quarry which is owned by Carmeuse.  It will be over our aquifer!!  Our lives depend on safe water!!  We have been fighting against Walker Environmental for over 5 years now and the cost of this struggle certainly doesn't come any where near the over an estimated 1 million dollars per week that Walker would make if this is approved by the Minister of the Environment & Climate Change!!  OPAL (Oxford People Against the Landfill) will be hosting an Update Rally on November 12th at St. James Anglican Church Hall at 2pm, in Ingersoll.  We would love to sing "Happy Birthday" to you, Neil .. in person .. should you be able to attend!!! It would sure help the attendance AND the spirit at this Rally!!

I guess I've got a story about this song I can share now that I've been pulled back to it.

For my senior project in high school I had to do a 20-minute presentation on a controversial issue. I took on the Keystone Pipeline XL since it was in the process of being voted on and all that. Doing research, it was apparent to me the pipeline was one big accident waiting to happen. Once I started learning about the multiple celebrities standing up to the construction, I put in a segment in the presentation about their efforts to get the public aware. I came across this song, being familiar with Neil Young's name but not really his music (different generation - you can't really blame me...), and I still think I made the right choice putting a ten-second clip (1:33 to 1:43) of this video on the second verse. I think I made an impression on the five teachers who made up the panel. Not from the song alone, technically, but just from the fact that there was an entire sweeping movement against the pipeline. It sort of converted me as I researched for several weeks.

But I think the biggest impact this song made on me was when I was actually making the presentation, spending an all-nighter putting it together because I was a procrastinating teenager. I don't know what I was thinking trying to do it the night before. But I had this song in the background over and over again, just sort of driving me on from sundown to sun-up on that February night. The instrumentals are beautiful, but yeah, the lyrics are kind of in-your-face environmentalist phrases. But I can't deny I appreciate this song for getting me through one of the most important times of my student career so far.

I did receive a perfect score on the presentation.

Thank you, Neil. All of us need to stand up, just like the Standing Rock protesters did. Stop the destroyers, the Trumps, the police state a-holes!

I appreciate Neil's steadfast optimism and positive outlook in spite of all he knows about how far gone we already are, in terms of the damage to the biosphere from man-made climate change. He's a good example in that sense. Like him, we should at least do whatever we can actually do.

I love Mr Young don't get me wrong, but if he cared that much for the earth shouldn't he have put the 6.2 million dollars he put into yet another iPod type product into to actually saving the earth instead of making more electronics which undoubtedly use fossil fuels and destroy the earth through their production.

  71. W.... Z....

    Definitely will share with friends

  72. S.... A....

Mr. Neil Young, I followed your life's  music and it is part of my life as my as brothers who wrote for Tom Petty and I wish in the song where he says "let our farmers grow" it would say "let our people go" and incorporate in the song somewhere to "stop the genocide". We need to go to the root of the concerns like Who is Monsanto where did they come from Let's get real it's IG Farben's USA Sister Co.

  73. R.... B....

Was this written for an after-school special on global warming? Ha! Wow, I think he's run out of tunes and lyrics. Sad to see a drug-addled man who once had talent pouring out this garbage. Save the earth from bad music! Love the hypocrisy, too. The guy asks Donald Trump for money for a music project, then attacks him for using his song. Hilarious stuff. The libs have no concept of reality, but the drugs are real!

  74. r.... ....

How many off shore oil wells will pollute the ocean before that is stopped? We can't get the oil on land instead? All the hurricanes in the ocean too? We are just asking for trouble. How many little accidents have happened that we are not informed of?

Great song ! I love about all of NY music!

    My two cents:
I  think this would resonate and inspire more people …if it was reinvents in a  raw ripping rock version.
The subject, message, melody and emotion are there.. just not a Hook &  the edge are missing… it is too beautiful.
The sand oil sand project is not beautiful!  but then again most large scale industrial things never are.
At any rate I think that can be provided by the Ripping /Snorting  guitar  that NY dose with Crazy Horse.

Neil! Someday out there we picked up two sticks and danced- do you remember the fun we had beside the fire? Phenomenal the amount of energy and resources it must take just to make one violin, or the education and resources poured into one violinist, let alone mic the entire orchestra. Is that a special room in a special building specifically made for performances and recordings? That must have taken some resources! Then, if people actually see this what kind of damage are we talkin' energy wise that all comes from someplace? I think it's best we all go back to the two sticks and campfire if you're trying to actually save something instead being a complete hypocrite. Stop dressing up the corpse.

❝This six-minute environmental call-to-arms finds Young crying foul of corporate greed and pleading to end the world's dependence of fossil fuels. It was spurred by several viewings of the documentary Under The Influence, which is about corporations' influence on government...The video features a version recorded by Young with a 92-piece orchestra. Disturbing images of pollution are shown on the screens above the classical musicians. The song was originally performed at Crazy Horse's UK shows during the summer of 2014 and as part of Young's solo acoustic set at Farm Aid in Raleigh, North Carolina on September 13th.
Young laid down four separate versions of the song. The first one released was a fierce live rendition with Crazy Horse recorded in July 2014 during a show in Liverpool, England.❞

Ban fossil fuels? Why is he going this far? It's as if all his followers rode their bikes to his concerts? Didn't I see him on the cover of a magazine with his vintage automobile? Don't we all drive gasoline-powered cars? Land will be kept cleaner if we use non-fossil fuel energy, but the oil riggers will be replaced with huge wind farms. It will be clean, but also rare disasters, an eyesore, and unfriendly. I rather drive or ride through an open country road, than a country road dotted with Goliath turbines. I guess that's the price for clean energy usage. Still, if we got rid of oil, we would use electricity for cars. That source comes from solar, wind, hydro, coal, nuclear, etc. Electric cars are not solar cars. That electricity comes from a variety of "dirty" sources. At least be realistic.

My generation's dreams are destroyed? Well if you became an engineer, scientist, broker, doctor, computer dude, tech dude they sure didn't from what I've seen. Middle class jobs are down because technology has replaced those skills and made them something some computer system can do. Automation. If you're going to accuse me of being a Luddite, accuse me of being correct too then. Take our your smartphone- that's why you don't have a job. Middle class skills have been repackaged in various applications and services by technology. I don't own a smartphone out of choice.

If he is talking about the recession, don't blame oil companies for that, blame banks and mortgage companies. It has nothing to do with fossil fuels. I have a car that gets 40mpg, and it has zero hybrid technology in it. Those lithium batteries don't even last the life of the car. And they are toxic and rare earth minerals. And how would getting rid of oil and fossil fuels help my generation realize their dreams? We can realize them with candlelight. Hey, I like candlelight. I like the Amish lifestyle, but I'm unsure how others feel if it came to that.

How many of our jobs hurt the environment? Rather, who's job out there has not one negative strain on the environment? Everyday I see my job strain water and electrical resources. I know a guy who's environmental, yet works constructing and selling irrigation systems to golf courses. To be environmental, I would have to admit golf is an unnecessary waste of water. Golf is as important to food, I guess. Rich people play golf. He is supporting the hobby of the rich, yet thinks they make too much money. Be careful of slapping the hand that feeds you. Let me ask, if lower middle class people played golf and it was a cheap sport, would he still be in his industry?

Why do people change? Ted Nugent was enjoyable with his old music just like I enjoy Neil, but now they both have changed. One is radical one way and one the other. I really feel like supporting them both equally. Ted can have his guns, and I'll install solar panels on Neil's home after I finish electrician's school. Unless he thinks electricians are also destroying the environment and need to be starved. I guess if I'm working for a big company, like an oil refinery, private college, military-industrial machinery, then I should be starved, but if I'm working for solar panels, then I should be wealthy. Honestly, I just want a job. A solar panel installation job seems more likely to be funded by taxpayer money too. Money that most folks don't enjoy paying. Just things to think about.

I'll keep playing his old music, Old Man Sugar Mountain Only Love Can Break Your Heart A Man Needs a Maid I am a Child Harvest Loner After the Gold Rush, that's all I can do for well-being.

  96. k.... ....

We each have to stand up in our own way. Been a gentle loving person and even one to speak out for wiser infrastructure - but not in a good position to go solar. Gratitude, Neil.

Such light and encouragement to find one's own way to make our life count! I too listen over and over to this video. It uplifts me and makes me happy that perhaps each of us can help make goodness count. We each do have such amazing gifts to go to the scarey, trembly place and make our own special difference.
