Young, Neil - Last Trip To Tulsa Lyrics

Well, I used to drive a cab,
you know
I heard a siren scream
Pulled over to the corner
And I fell into a dream
There were
two men eating pennies
And three young girls who cried
The West coast is falling,
I see rocks in the sky.
The preacher took his bible
And laid it on the stool.
He said: with
the congregation running,
Why should I play the fool?

Well, I used to be a woman,
you know
I took you for a ride,
I let you fly my airplane
It looked good for your pride.
'Cause you're
the kind of man you know
Who likes what he says.
I wonder what's it's like
To be so far over my head.
Well, the lady made the wedding
And she brought along the ring.
She got down on her knees
And said: Let's
get on with this thing.

Well, I used to be a folk singer
Keeping managers alive,
When you saw me on a corner
And told me I was jive.
So I unlocked your mind, you know
To see what I could see.
If you guarantee the postage,
I'll mail you back the key.
Well I woke up in the morning
With an arrow through my nose
There was an Indian in the corner
Tryin' on my clothes.

Well, I used to be asleep
you know
With blankets on my bed.
I stayed there for a while
'Til they discovered I was dead.
The coroner was friendly
And I liked him quite a lot.
If I hadn't 've been a woman
I guess I'd never have been caught.
They gave me back my house and car
And nothing more was said.

Well, I was driving
down the freeway
When my car ran out of gas.
Pulled over to the station
But I was afraid to ask.
The servicemen were yellow
And the gasoline was green.
Although I knew I couldn't
I thought that I was gonna scream.
That was on my last trip to Tulsa
Just before the snow.
If you ever need a ride there,
Be sure to let me know.

I was chopping down a palm tree
When a friend dropped by to ask
If I would feel less lonely
If he helped me swing the axe.
I said: No, it's
not a case of being lonely
We have here,
I've been working on this palm tree
For eighty seven years
I said: No, it's
not a case of being lonely
We have here,
I've been working on this palm tree
For eighty seven years
He said: Go get lost!
And walked towards his Cadillac.
I chopped down the palm tree
And it landed on his back.

My dad has like 3000 vinyl disks. When he's away I always take out a random disk and put it in the record player. This song is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard, amazing.

When my daughter was 16 I put headphones on her and had her listen to this. I told her it explained the meaning of life. She thought I was crazy and maybe she was right but hell, I think I was right.

  3. J.... O....

I like the early Neil Young very much, this number is pure and unique, both vocals and sound

    Anton Chigurh looks great here!

Have the first release on vinyl! Love this. Neil is the Best!!

  6. R.... T....

I love it but would not think of covering it. It's Neil's song and only he can perform it.

  13. A.... T....

This album was the first of Neil Young's that I had heard. I hesitate to say it was 47 years ago but we still listen to NY and this track has always been one of my favourites. Where do all the years go...... I still feel the same when I listen to this album.

  14. S.... M....

Tulsa born and raised ....keep going back there often, suppose I always will until I finally take take my last trip there

  15. J.... S....

Fun fact: Neil actually performed this song live during the last days of Buffalo Springfield -- there is a facsimile of a newspaper clipping on one of the pages in the book accompanying the Box Set that attests to this.

    J.... S....

    Jason Stegall & Co. really?

    J.... S....

    To quote Gary Cooper: Yup.

    Ayup. Common knowledge.

Just saw Neil for the first time in my life, 34 years old, finally got to see him, at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia which is a way intimate place and he opened with this. Mindblowing, my life is officially different now. Thanks Neil and for whoever shared this.

    J.... H....

Lucky you to see him at that great venue.

  17. M.... S....

Had the sheer luck to see him open the show with this at the Tower Theater in Philly on 10/1. What a thrill... First time he has performed it in twenty years!!!

The most forgotten Neil Album. His first solo album and it is fantastic (if you are a die hard Neil fan like me for 50 years!) The lyrics here are the best part! I love it! Thanks for posting this!!!

  22. m.... ....

I use to be a woman...what is that in reference to? I chopped down the palm tree and it landed on his back...was that in reference to Steve Stills or David Crosby?

  23. M.... C....

the corner was friendly i like him quite a lot🗻🎼🎧👤🎸🎤

  24. p.... ....

We had, and still have, a guy in the UK who was on the same wavelength as Neil at this point in time. Roy Harper. With his voice and polemical lyrics Roy should have been huge but somehow either chose or was let down by his label/management. His most accessible 'rock' album was HQ. As a fan of both men I merely mention it here now that the cultural symbiosis unveils itself after all these years

    p.... ....

How is Roy Harper relevant to Neil Young though? He has a song dedicated to him on Led Zeppelin III. He Also sings on Have A Cigar by Pink Floyd. Whats his connection to Neil Young?

    p.... ....

    Hats off to Roy Harper

  27. C.... M....

Always had the gift. Saw him at Canterbury House in Ann Arbor right after he went solo.
Confirmed where most of Buffalo Springfield propulsion came from...This song of course is very sixties
    on the road/ acid culture...

  28. A.... D....

I had heard this song before but really liked it today...you never know what will hit you on any given day

  29. R.... C....

Time to face facts , if this is one of your favorite songs you may have taken one to many hits , took one more trip than you should have or blacked out more than you should have.

  30. A.... T....

I have always been a fan of Neil Young and this song has always been a favourite, I suppose that it is rather weird but just love it especially the last verse. Brilliant sound so many thanks. I have the vinyl but nothing now to play it on.

When I was a young freshman in '72, my very first night I tuned into Clemson's WSBF 88.1. The Last Trip to Tulsa was one of the first songs I heard when I studied late at night. Just listening transports me back to simpler times when I was young without much a care in the world. Thanks Neil, this is my favorite.

As a spotty teen in the 70s enjoying my guitar, there were three Neil Young in particular I enjoyed playing; this one, Ambulance Blues and Broken Arrow (OK, Buffalo Springfield). Thanks for posting. Nostalgia!

I love Broken Arrow so much. After all these years, it still takes my breath away.

  49. s.... l....

may be one of neil's best songs .... recorded during his manson phase, an interesting aspect given the stream of consciousness form of lyrics.... good stuff.....

  50. R.... H....

I remembering hearing this song (and my favorite of Neil's) for the first time one night in my dorm room on WSBF, Clemson U's student radio station.  Just takes me back.

  51. J.... F....

  54. J.... H....

Have always loved this-reminds me of Dave Herman playing this for myself and a friend early one morning in NYC. He thought we were insane, but played it anyway. Thanks Dav and as always, thanks Neil. You are one of the greatest!

I'm 58, a Neil Young fan... forever, since high-school.  Fans should check out ‘Emerald Eyes’ on Amazon.  It’s about how Neil Young's music helped a teenager find meaning again after losing his father in a tragic mill accident.  Tom, becomes distant and withdrawn throughout his adolescence but after feeling 'in tune' with Neil's music, buys a Martin D-18 guitar and secretly starts singing and writing. Great read with an unexpected 'twist' at the end. A feel good moment for Neil Young fans.

  66. G.... D....

Great song from a brilliant album, kinda gets over looked by most but has some of my favourite Neil songs on it,the old laughing lady, the loner and of course this masterpiece!

  67. R.... M....

Love, love, love this song. Neil rocks!

  68. j.... s....

for me, best song on this record. no commercial potential. which is not exactly on a music critics or a re cord co's sales vp's +  checklist..like to think of NY in a studio doing this, no-one there else, every wall painted white, tape just rolling...

  69. K.... B....

I still have all of my Neil vinyl. On the beach is still one of my favorites. Vinyl rules.

  70. J.... O....

What a wonderful composition. So incredibly relaxing.

    Always enjoyed Neil. Still do.

    S.... B....

Thanks. I'm going to play it again now in the lab.

    S.... B....

Awesome that you can listen to your tunes in the lab! Dr Schmeedelstein

    S.... B....

You are very welcome (altho I'd say Neil deserves all of the thanks ;)  ).

I quite enjoy transferring my vinyl to my computer; it allows my collection to remain in mint condition, while making it much more portable. :] Doing it properly does take a lot of time - but it's a labour of love.

    Cheers to all!

    S.... B....

You really did a fantastic job, shneizah.  Send over a fave if you have time.

  75. D.... W....

    you've obviously never done drugs

  76. M.... C....

I used to perform this in the 70s. LSD was not bad, except for the stric in the brown window pane, unless you were fundamentally out of balance.

    M.... C....

i remember  REAL  LSD,  in the late 60's,   love was eginning to grow within us as a society,  then everything turned aeway

    M.... C....

+Matthew Clayton There was never really strychnine in LSD, that myth has been debunked several times.

  77. B.... ....

I have the vinyl too. Seems like a lot of us oldsters love Neil. Rightly so.

  78. D.... M....

Fantastic lyrics that spurred a few trips i took . They were a part of the times and good times were shared by a few friends.purple micro dot was the consensus preference.Indians trying on my clothes!!!

I have it on vinyl - with Zuma, On the Beach, Tonight's the Night, After the Gold Rush, Harvest - still have my awesome Thorens turntable - these tunes are the real deal - they shaped me as a person. Thanks for everything Neil!

  83. l.... ....

Did Joni Mitchell do this album cover?  It looks similar to her "Clouds" album cover.

  84. j.... a....

This is quite an amazing song, since it's no mean feat to get up on any stage...where it's just you and the guitar...keeping the audience practically on the edge of their seats...well that's what still sets Neil Young above all others...even to this very day, and this song is one of the reasons why...Thank You!....

    j.... a....

so have smoked pot with neil and his wife and toured from houston to La. but you confusing me. I have never heard this... Please share...

  86. r.... c....

Mishmash of rambling lyrics trying to grasp on to a rhyme that in the end does not make enough sense to come in out of the rain .

    r.... c....

Are you kidding?  This song explains the entire meaning of life.  Haha.  I told that to my daughter when she was 16 and she's loved this song ever since.  Of course ever since then she thinks I'm an idiot.

You had to be there Mr. Christensen - I'm sorry you weren't.

  88. A.... T....

I have an original old vinyl from the early seventies but nothing to play it on!!!!! This was one of my favourites, and still is........... but most of NY is brilliant. We have the CD collection but still doesn't sound quite the same.............perhaps cos we are a lot older!!!!

    A.... T....

Agree.  There's something about the old vinyl that is timeless.

    A.... T....

anita rember what LJS said to jim hawkins...

  92. a.... ....

How about you Leonard, I've been working on this palm tree for 67 years. And sometimes I would love to drop down and land on His back. See it's not such a bad verse. I remember the first time I heard this song late 60's early 70's I thought I had found my long lost brother. I had just returned from a 1700 mile hitchhiking trip and I had been to that gas station. And although I couldn't I thought that I was gonna scream. Peace.

  93. a.... ....

Maybe you also like some of us actually experienced this to some degree thanks to Ousley, Leary, Huxley, McKenna, Ram Dass, Kesey, Garcia and others. The 60's an extraordinary time often copied but can never be duplicated so please don't try. It wasn't all a bed of roses but it was experimental to the extreme. Some good some bad but it was...........

  94. a.... ....

    You are Preston.

  95. a.... ....

continued from above: And if you don't believe blogging is therapy just read on the average web site. You will see what I mean. Observe the collective psychosis that we call America.
