Young, Neil - Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) Lyrics

Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.

Out of the blue
and into the black
You pay for this,
but they give you that
And once you're gone,
you can't come back
When you're out of the blue
and into the black.

The king is gone
but he's not forgotten
Is this the story
of Johnny Rotten?
It's better to burn out
'cause rust never sleeps
The king is gone
but he's not forgotten.

Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.

Epic ink from my walking stick, made from automatic verse, reformatted by CorVus for us, to enjoy, pass by, or if you must then go ahead- diss. It is only space inside the space we ride.
CAT ON THE KEYS (Out of the Blue, Into the Black)
J-j-just so many fans and critics,
    artisans and cynics,
try and put ourselves so vulnerable
    upon the ever typhoon shaken
    tightwire of performance life,
    even chance a dance
in strange lands where the verse you sing
may be your curse, may be your blessing.
This I know as first hand so I empathize
and see through so many eyes,
I can only appreciate all that is,
no way to pay my tribute through comparisons,
Dylan got his award and names ignored
such as Neil Young, Tom Waits, Lawrence Ferlighetti,
Jim Morrison ( alive I say, seen him at a party
    where Elvis hit on Liberace)
how about JJ Cale, Clapton too and never fails
nobody seems to get Bruce Springsteen,
beyond the whole to the lyrical
what a very fantastic way he writes his life..
so many more, I can never decide
when someone is having a better
acoustic or plugged in until I get that same feeling,
like I am the pulse beating in sync,
so I let the moment feel my way,
    this impossible dream a song
I am taken for the meaning since the day I was born,
    sometimes a sweet notion,
often more a dissident for fair change,
I will miss Leonard Cohen and some
names that many will never realize,
changed by the verse, sold to survive,
not to be known at all, just as Ian Anderson once ranted
how the best of all will stand champions
of the garage the park, the basic underground,
and it is always simply lacking
of humility (I know so am I) how we rate these versions,
when perhaps in the world of stray lost critics,
we should be the rodeo clowns...
not for nothing, not for pay,
only to derail the runaway train.
I am often in err, not always to gain
    my best listen awhile
upon the first or 33rd round,
yet all too often it is like my nickname,
the Slow Bullet, it comes around,
gets into the marrow and stays there...
    evermore gaining new appreciations
    with every new real listen.
I love this as a preamble
to the electrified and sawed off sound
of the shots how these do come so much
Out of the Blue and Into the Black.
The creators may recycle and never
as themselves come back, yet now we try
to preserve what has been given.
My rooms of discs are overwhelming
and so are my lists- all the lists!
Just please know I love it all.
    Appreciation is not the cause,yet
I know it helps and hope it does.
So many windows and here no walls,
so many hearts beat, and for each one,
also an asshole, hahaha, sorry truth is funny.
How would any artist rate our own comments?
What would Jesus do if he ran one or another
    Department of Defense?
Why oh why do I wonder about all of this?
As I do wonder so I do wander,
    will I plunder over yonder,
my destiny howls to be further explored,
and I hear my place, the Rider
    there upon the Grey Horse,
    long since breath has left her;
by the fires here, of course,
we come ablaze and we come in highest spirits,
everything is love and everything is music,
can you hear it? Can you feel it?
    Primal Braille
    upon these windows without walls,
here and now though they may stand or they may fall,
    we come ablaze and singed,
    evermore and after all,
I am RaVen DaWn and I ride the fringe,
pull in the strays, for the next light
it is their day... and I ride, oh I ride,
here along a narrow way and deadly fall,
ride here with no fear a long long time,
for I am one sleeve fitted and surely committed,
thus my black wings spread as shelter
from the embers that would burn my tribes.
We are still as one, thought to have been done,
I can assure to those who need to feel it,
we are genuine and so far gone,
no long range missile can end what we are.
Here I work a toil in tasks of honor,
basking in both the shine and the horror,
as I navigate the soul mines,
    to free the ether ore,
    creation will perpetuate and only
the insecure will chose to ignore.
My soul ablaze, my mind half crazed,
the horse I come in on too,
    singed and how are you?
    I dare because I care;
I will always be there, riding the fringe.
    Unlimited and unbound
my station though it may be,
    the challenges of humanity,
    of nature in this incarnation,
to be of wonder, and to grow free,
out my cage and break my chains,
    send the sages my remains.
Oh and did I happen to mention,
I love you, in every incarnation,
be it acoustic, or plugged in.
Oh and yes, that's what she said.
Honey I versed as you demanded now
how heavy handed must you be,
can you loosen these ties set me free
from these bedpoles, or if you must have more,
s'mo is always what enough will be for,
then tighten the straps to your heart's delight.
I may have to fake my fuss,
and not really even try to fight it,
just whatever the moments may grace us,
    dynamite to light your candles.
    B-b-bada boom!!!
She flies in on her flaming broom,
barb wire hair and laughter so deep,
I feel like this may be a morsal of the mortal in me.
She tells me both the beaver and the otter won't bite.
I suspect that is a false oasis, drink of the well, spellbound.
As with Liberty, I may have cracks,
    yet I am never broken.
Uh- damn that cat got on the keys again.
I am certain it is nothing, yet
is that the end begins again or
is that just more evermore to dive deeper into
    the Zen, Zentastic, because
if the future is built on remember when,
then I surely must come back again, yes
    I must always come again!
As we say when we explore,
can't get enough until we get s'mo.
The future is never too far.
    Further is never too far.
Let the sun burn away, just another acoustic star,
we will have our day, to enlist yet another.
As with life, love finds a way.
Yes, my cat on the keys here,
she has gone on a binge,
always though she is dear to me,
as right or as wrong as she may be.
I exist inside this snowglobe reality.
Primal surreal and I am only a Slow Bullet,
always aimless yet also on target.
I am only a soul driven man,
happy to shovel all the coal that riles this runaway train.
Stop she says, come in from the booming rain,
just stop she says, please for an evening refrain.
She has cookies! She has great cookies!
I dance for a good cookie do not we all?
    She has strange elixers, cures
what ails ya', if'n it don't kill ya' first.
It is a roomy ride in the back of the hearse,
stretch out my flesh and totem my pole,
there are ravens and tigers, and dragons
that fly and dance, and dive in to the briny depths
of the all, what ever it IS, such that it IS,
must be all that I need to know,
    there are so many windows
and yet not a single wall-
    doors off the hinges
    spring forth and fall back,
    ah here comes the lady,
has me tethered for her attack.
I will not let her know the hinges have failed,
I will my seeds here to sow,
a Slow Bullet train, riding off the rails,
always here through tornados of fire,
    I come through,
    only a tad bit singed,
    for I am RaVen DaWn
    and I ride the fringe.
    Once again,
    I love you.

  22. A.... W....

Has to be a considered one of the modern classics. Grunge, feedback, yet acoustic and not that loud it over-bares the man with such a distinctive and IMHO, awesome voice. Yet the whole package is actually noisy and should be played extremely loud. Such a talent and his band have never let him down. Real rock music.

  23. U.... ....

Rust would be a good subgenre name for this type of rock music

  24. R.... C....

  34. G.... H....

I love the baseball bat hitting wood sound in the background beat all the way to the last note of the song

  35. M.... ....

My Dad recorded this album onto a cassette tape, and back when I was about 3 or 4 years old we'd listen to it when we drove to the city.
At the end of 'Hey Hey, My My' the tape would click a couple of times and the song would start over. When I asked him why he said, "There was some room left on the tape, and the song is so good I knew I'd want to listen to it again".
We'd listen to it twice every time. Good memories.

  58. J.... W....

You could put this in a space capsule, simply titled "Music, USA, 20th Century; artist: Neil Young and Crazy Horse" and you'd be there in showing rock/roll to an alien race. Might be too volatile, might be too incendiary, might be just right....

My family hails originally from New Hampshire and Toronto, Ontario, Canada, yet still love this Neil Young, Canada and; of course, also this very talented and prolific guitar player, singer's music from Northern Ontario. Go, Neil Young !!

  63. j.... a....

I'm sure Neil hates "the godfather of grunge" moniker (i sure do)...it's an insult to his intelligence.

And fuck curt cobain, i'm so sick of hearing about what an "artiste'" he was, b/c he wasn't in any way shape or form...i have zero empathy for him as suicide is the pussies way out...and his music said nothing.

All i will say on his behalf is...i'd of blown my brains out too if i was married to that piece of human garbage courtney love.

@travis hinshaw I know. The two songs are almost identical, though.

    F.... S....

@kain hall I've heard of the Meat Puppets. They were an '80s punk band who inspired Nirvana. They even joined Nirvana for a couple tunes on the famous MTV Unplugged record.

    T.... G....

Johnny actually did a mocking tribute to that line in the song with his own over-the-top impression of Neil Young.

  87. a.... ....

I still have my original vinyl copy of this, which I bought as a kid back in 1980! It still has the $5.98 sticker permanently stuck to the opened cling wrap, which is still holding desperately onto the LPs cover!!! I remember thinking how expensive this LP was, and then bringing it home, and listening to it on my Mother's 1970's era oversized stereo console! Fucking fantastic LP! In my opinion, probably Neil Young's most inventive and strongest LP, second only to AFTER THE GOLD RUSH! Neil had such a gift for being able to change with the times, because he has always been so open minded to new movements in rock music, whatever that means!!!

    a.... ....

Nice. I collect vinyl myself. Probably got many stories in my collection!
