Young, Neil - Alabama Lyrics
Oh Alabama
The devil fools
With the best laid plan
Swing low Alabama
You got the spare change
And now the moment
Is all that it meant
Alabama, you got
The weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back
Your Cadillac
Has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track
Banjos playing
Through the broken glass
Windows down in Alabama
See the old folks
Tied in white robes
Hear the banjo
Don't it take you down home?
Alabama, you got
The weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back
Your Cadillac
Has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track
Oh Alabama
Can I see you
And shake your hand
Make friends down in Alabama
I'm from a new land
I come to you
And see all this ruin
What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the union
To help you along
What's going wrong?

You couldn't pay me to live in Alabama. Pure sh*thole.
SUBLIME
There r good people in Alabama.
Alabama's vote Democrat.....save your souls
I'm slowly coming to the raalisation that Neil Young is God.
Okey dokey doggie daddy

Southern Man Don't need him round anyhow.
Pwnzistor See the old folks tied in white ropes hear the banjo don't it take you down home
Fuck alabama/sessions/trump...
sublime et intemporel ♥
The beginning of this tune reminds me of trying to fire up the ole mini bike, itd a catch and run like a top.
David crosby and graham nash are on this too.
Yes. True. Why? Well, it's Abe Lincoln's fault. He destroyed the Agricultural machine the South in order to establish the Industrial and War machines that exist today. The South never really recovered from that. Abe committed genocide on his own people.
Neil: Alabama is full of poverty and racists!
Lynyrd Skynyrd: At least the sky is blue lawl
Southern man don't need you anyhow.
John Paul I heard screaming and bullwhips crackin'
"Well I hope Neil Young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow"
Lynyrd Skynyrd Sweet Home Alabama
relkins44 Alabam You Got The Rest Of The Union To Help You Along.
As much as I love the song Sweet Home Alabama, Neil was speaking the truth
There are racists EVERYWHERE!! White racists, black racists, hispanic racists, asian racists...
What truth? He wrote a song about a place and a time he didn't experience. This song is as inspired by truth as any other work of fiction like Gangs of New York.
@JP : Correct but it was HIS truth based upon a distant observation.
Bonjour Alabama !!! 4 sept 2019
Love this song. IMHO, this one is better than Sweet Home, Alabama. Both are great, this one is a bit greater.
Canadian white savior!
Go Dawgs
heard neil young talking about us, heard old neil put us down.
well I hope Neil Young will remember..
See the old folks tied in white ropes, hear the banjo don't it take you down home
The guitar opening of this song is iconic, equal to Strawberry Fields and Strawberry Letter...
Sweet home
I can almost feel my hair and beard grow listening to this! takes me back to the 1970s when I worked for Fender Guitar. Now, at 67, that's a lot of water under the bridge.
Neil Young actually got Stephen Stills and David Crosby to do background vocals. I thought that CSNY's break-up was more acrimonious.
Graham is unaccredited on this. I heard somewhere they did it all separately.
Brilliance never fades.💘
HOW DID THIS SONG BECOME AN ABORTION ISSUE??
Sofonda Logic because Alabama has recently passed restrictive abortion laws
This is the white version of a rap feud!.
Fun
It's amazing that Alabama is a thriving state now. You liberals can hate them for upholding conservative thought but I'd rather live there than California.
Idk but south of i-10, Alabama is really nice.
Wow Alabama is so terrible not wanting to kill all those babies. We need more babies killed now!!!!
This but unironically.
same ole shit...
Neil still nails it in 2019. Fuck you Alabama.
Go to hell Alabama , you are everything exept sweet !
And you are a f’n saint 🤨
Fuck Alabama.
I'm also the guy that blasts this song when ever I'm in alabama just to piss people off
If I were Neil I would sing this song in a special concert in every major city in alabama and not apologize
I lived there a year. Great and beautiful state!
With Southern Man as the encore
sweet home bavaria
Their Abortion laws are right and all crybabies can suck it
131 senators disliked this video
along with the whole of Lynyrd Skynyrd
All of the democrats hate anything which serves to unite races.. it goes against the "divide and conquer" policy which was perfected by hussein obama.
@Doug Durrum Kilroy was here...
Your Cadillac now has all four wheels in a deep ditch.
Jimmy Page 1971 off-roading in the pile of filth that is their state. Let's remember that their citizens are responsible for voting in these law makers, and they must be responsible for voting them out.
The wheels have popped and fallen off and the Cadillac has caught on fire and fell off a cliff
Hand maids tale is real down in alabama.. blessed be the fruit
Alabama has redeemed itself and maybe America too.
Neil Young you were so right.
Some things never change.
Jim Peluso
Did you go to Cal poly Pomona ?
@Greg Snyder GO BRONCOS! No I didn't.

Denny Belhammond did you just say meow
You got me. “Guilty as Charged” (1978GH?)
The definition of timeless--when you can return to a song decades later and the lyrics are still applicable.
All too applicable today, unfortunately.
Recorded 48 years ago and the lyrics haven't aged a day. Incredible from Neil's perspective, horrible and disappointing as an American.
get over yourself
what a shithole of a state
Sad that this song is so appropriate in May 2019.
thank you mister/master Y!
VINDICATED!!!
hell yeah
"States rights should supersede Federal rights, we need tighter pollution standards & gun control than what Bush is proposing"-Libs in the 2000's
We want government out of people's lives, but excuse me we have to go monitor every uterus in the country. CONservatives.
@Life in the 413 Ya because we don't want babies to be killed
@Rock21 If that were true then you would give a shit about a baby once it's born but you don't actually care. "If you're pre-born they love you, if you're preschool you're fucked."
George Carlin nailed what you shits are.
Round head
And here we are in 2019
Get lost
Great album!
Anyone else here because Neil Young is now vindicated?
Bob Schneider Agreed, but Neil himself thought it was too harsh & even sung along w/Skynyrd once after they dissed him in SHA. Now I’ll bet he feels less sorry.
@mjparthum I'm sure he's taken that back already.
Vindicated from what?
Wrong question, Chief...
I'm just here because I love the song.
Neil had it right- fuck Alabama

Neil Young should have never been asked to apologize for this nasty state.
@Carolyn Zaremba smh
A southern man dont need him around
@Carolyn Zaremba he apologized after the song, not in the song
@Matt Frankman Thank you for your Canadian sanity. Do you have any more on hand, perchance? We could use some more.. D.A. JD NYC
He didn't know what the hell he was talking about. He dissed an entire people he knew nothing about, dirt poor white people who had nothing to do with slavery.
Alabam You've got the rest of the Union to help you along
How could anyone dislike this?
I love how Lynyrd Skynyrd's response was basically ''Lol yeah, and?''
They were fans of Neil, it was more or less a tongue in cheek response
Ronnie Van Zant often preformed wearing a Neil Young t shirt.
@A&L
They understood and agreed with what Neil Young was singing about, they were more or less saying we'll take care of it. Was 'Walk on' a response to 'Sweet home Alabama?'
did you help save nelson
Fuck me ....my 61 BD buy me and fly me
Southern man dont need him around anyhow
@art vallejos I was responding to Asa
IrishTemper13 Please search Neil Young. Change Your Mind
@art vallejos LOL what does that even mean? I've been listening to Neil Young since 1972. I was yawning at the Lynyrd Skynyrd reference Asa made.
IrishTemper13 It doesn't mean a thing world on a string I was just suggesting a good song by. NY but you probably already know that song cuz You've been listening to NY since 1972
We'll see
SAME SONG FOR CALIFORNIA AND NEW YORK.LIBERAL STATES.

Sound Like To QUEEN : v

#deadhead4life
Those are very powerful lyrics and he is not pulling any punches!
Too bad Neil & Skynyrd never toured together. Great song!
@kevinjames You are correct. Van Zant use to wear a Tonights the Night t-shirt on stage afterwards. They wrote Sweet Home Alabama jokingly and they loved Neil and his music. Neil played Alabama and then Sweet Home Alabama on stage, in Miami, soon after the plane crash. He never played Alabama again.
Skynyrd were the most racist band all over...... Neil wrote many songs "against" them, this is one of them, with Southern Man"
@MIMHONEY "In Birmingham they love the Gov'nor, boo-hoo-hoo
Now we all did what we could do" was an affront to Wallace's oppositions to desegregation. Gary Rossington has even pledged to stop associating the band with the Confederate flag. Neil Young did not write "many songs" against them. "Sweet Home Alabama" was produced after "Alabama" and "Southern Man." So, unless Neil had a time machine, he couldn't have written those in response to LS's song. Saying they were racist is propagating a false narrative based upon hearsay and subjective, theoretical rumors.
Alabam You've got the rest of the Union to help you along
@Diego Hernandez That's exactly what was originally reported.
