One of my favorite Stevie tracks. It's gotta be the saddest uplifting song ever! Absolutely love Michael Sembello's guitar rifts and just the sometimes odd melody and overall melancholic feel to the song. If this song was just all joy, it would more shallow with it's message of trying to cheer up someone and telling them to smile when faced with challenges and dark times.

Stevie is a genius. He is in the profound gifted range.

You are a true fan, my friend! I recall the jeers that were aimed at Stevie for "Secret Life of Plants", but being a true fan like you, I purchaswd that double album despite the nay sayers,and found it to be an amazing collection that showed the incredible genious of Stevie in his ability to create a musical collage that was music with a whole world of musical reference points,and styles.I finally got to see the movie that that album was the soundtrack for,and I was absolutely floored at the way he was able to compose a score that perfectly meshed with a film that he couldn't see!

We also have to add a couple more albums to our list. "
in Square Circle" and "Original Musicquarium" Musicquarium" is mainly viewed as a greatest hits compilation, but there were a few original songs included in that mix, like"Do I Do"

Sure we can.....but those albums weren't beginning to end classics. There were bumps & a few instantly forgettable songs, but some winners also. I too bought Plants when it was first out. I paid the critics no kind. It's simply one of the most incredible musical scores ever! Like u said, the fact that he couldn't even see the fulll didn't detract from his visualization of the secret life of plants. I do admit thhateat it was kinda funny seeing him steer a boat into the reeds, & I was scared for him when he walked through the woods - that he was gonna hit a tree, but he was a trooper: Good for him!

@***** I personally don't get into the "best of all time" thingy. Music is too diverse & wonderful to lock in like that. But he no doubt gave us a decade of unforgettable stuff.

I  love Stevie so much. I can even forgive him for "  I just called " and other maudlin and sentimental drivel that he put out . But the brilliant far outweighs the mediocre. Stevie is was and always will be an absolute musical maestro .

stevie wanted s rite other music.he was frustrated with classic 70s label put on him.so he refused to write that kinda music again until conversation peace.

One of my favorites-helped keep me beyond cloud nine with a beautiful girl inside and out; we were wildly in love and had inspirational and exhilarating moments I never even knew existed!... but alas it lasted all too short and it ended but I still listened to this song and it makes me think HOPE AND LOVE SPRINGS ETERNAL and I didn't give up on love and found thank God I think the best woman in the world in countless ways beyond my ability to believe and I am in awe of her but she is a rock and has convinced me God really IS looking after me and I had my share of lows like everybody but noone lifts my soul up and strengthens my belief in love as much as the profound incredible magnificent Stevie Wonder-you and your love filled music will live forever on the highest plateau...

@superviewer I wonder...surely Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone (perhaps with Larry Graham and "The Family") had various encounters. I guess their times just missed each other. By the time Stevie was at his "best"--73ish--Sly had already flown too close to the sun and crashed. A toast to the what-could-haves^^

well stated...Sly and the Family Stone were and still are terribly profound--look at what they did to Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and just about everyone else. I personally find it very hard to move too far away from the music of Sly and Stevie, in particular. Two gems of western cilivization.

Stevie Wonder's a musical genious. I got all of his albums motherf...... (-: On inspiration Sly Stone obviously was one inspiration for Stevie's golden age. If you don't know you should listen to some Sly and the Family Stone albums and come back to Stevie.

@cbmuzik Obviously Stevie doesn't "dance", but if you listen to the music, the vocal intonations, the instruments used in Michael's early work- especially w/ the Jackson 5 in the late 70's & early 80's, its ALL Stevie Wonder. On the song "You Haven't Done Nothing" off the "Fulfillingness First Finale" album, he uses the J5 on background vocals. Michael raved about working w/ Stevie in the studio & how much he learned from that experience. Listen 2 vocalists today- all u hear is Stevie Wonder

But, there is music that, for the most part, only people who grew up with know about. Actually, as I'm replying back to you, I'm listening to Superwoman... All I can say about that song is.... nothing! lol I can't say a thing because Stevie just hits a chord with you. For someone who is visually blind, he sees the world clearer than others would. I just feel blessed to know that there was only one boxset in the store and I have it. I really do feel as if I just bought something priceless.

It's funny that you replied back to me now, because on Friday I bought "Stevie Wonder: At the Close of the Century". It's a 4 disc box set of 70 Stevie songs.
I have always listened to Stevie. My mom always had the old school R&B radio stations on and I knew at a young age that Stevie was something special. I always knew about the obvious hits like Do I Do, Superstition, Signed Sealed Del., etc.

I bought it from Amazon. You can try to check your electronic stores to see if they have it, because there are some cases that they do. But, if you just want to get it ASAP, go online.

It was after I heard Stevie sing "They Won't Go When I Go" that I decided to look for that song. Considering I don't buy music digitally, I decided to buy "Fullingness" because I liked the song so much. Have and behold, I am in love and awe over this album! I am SO VERY happy that I bought it! I've listened to Smile Please all day long! I am 19 and love old school soul. I consider to Stevie be the Mozart of our time. You can agree or disagree. I don't care. All I know is that Stevie is genious!!

Totally, completely agree! I've been saying for years that "Fulfillingness" is probably Stevie's most under-rated works. Looking back, it's on a par, in many ways, with his "Songs in the Key of Life." While Stevie cannot "see" things in the same way we do, his VISION is truly immense!

Stevie reportedly broke down at two of his concerts in the past week. I saw a news clip of him singing a song he wrote for MJ from Off the Wall.
