Wonder, Stevie - Smile Lyrics

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

this song makes me think of my daughter a month when I hold her and she looks at me with her blue eyes

  27. T.... B....

innervisions is his best in my opinions i love secret life of plants but this and songs in a key are GREAT aswell

  28. D.... V....

    Stevie is a TRUE pioneer!

  29. L.... ....

    Go Stevie Go!!!

  30. T.... ....

Stevie should do a commercial, like he did for the Kodak camera cmmrcl back in 1988.

  31. J.... S....

With the great Minnie Riperton  on background vocals - this is one of Stevie's best. One of many.

    J.... S....

    Deniece Williams!

    J.... S....

    and wife Syreeta Wright

  32. k.... m....

    Cool Sound !

  33. S.... J....

One of my favorite Stevie tracks. It's gotta be the saddest uplifting song ever! Absolutely love Michael Sembello's guitar rifts and just the sometimes odd melody and overall melancholic feel to the song. If this song was just all joy, it would more shallow with it's message of trying to cheer up someone and telling them to smile when faced with challenges and dark times.

  34. J.... M....

Stevie is a genius. He is in the profound gifted range.

  35. R.... D....

who got this 8-track tape. I know I do.

    R.... D....

just found it on an old cassette tape i had recorded off LP albums way way back. beautiful. i know it's a cliche, but i'm gonna say it: they just don't make music like this anymore.

Stevie is a musical genius. His music tugs at everyone of my heart strings. The composition of every song is brillant. The groove at the very end of this song is insane. SUCH A TEASE THOUGH!!! I needed that to ride out for another 5 minutes. Seriously!

He is my fave for a reason!!!

    This and Innervisions?

  45. M.... C....

Just listening to this song is infectious for making one smile! Thank you so much, Stevie!

    M.... C....

You are a true fan, my friend! I recall the jeers that were aimed at Stevie for "Secret Life of Plants", but being a true fan like you, I purchaswd that double album despite the nay sayers, and found it to be an amazing collection that showed the incredible genious of Stevie in his ability to create a musical collage that was music with a whole world of musical reference points, and styles.I finally got to see the movie that that album was the soundtrack for,and I was absolutely floored at the way he was able to compose a score that perfectly meshed with a film that he couldn't see!

We also have to add a couple more albums to our list. "
in Square Circle" and "Original Musicquarium" Musicquarium" is mainly viewed as a greatest hits compilation, but there were a few original songs included in that mix, like"Do I Do"

Do we dare to include "Characters", and the "Jungle Fever"soundtrack to our list?

    M.... C....

Sure we can.....but those albums weren't beginning to end classics. There were bumps & a few instantly forgettable songs, but some winners also. I too bought Plants when it was first out. I paid the critics no kind. It's simply one of the most incredible musical scores ever! Like u said, the fact that he couldn't even see the fulll didn't detract from his visualization of the secret life of plants. I do admit thhateat it was kinda funny seeing him steer a boat into the reeds, & I was scared for him when he walked through the woods - that he was gonna hit a tree, but he was a trooper: Good for him!

    M.... C....

@***** I personally don't get into the "best of all time" thingy. Music is too diverse & wonderful to lock in like that. But he no doubt gave us a decade of unforgettable stuff.

    M.... C....

D Me Stevie is that thingy....Best of all Time 😜

    Thanks for sharing 🌷 J ~

  48. J.... B....

I  love Stevie so much. I can even forgive him for "  I just called " and other maudlin and sentimental drivel that he put out . But the brilliant far outweighs the mediocre. Stevie is was and always will be an absolute musical maestro .

    J.... B....

stevie wanted s rite other music.he was frustrated with classic 70s label put on him.so he refused to write that kinda music again until conversation peace.

    My favorite Stevie song

  53. R.... F....

Sublime, espectacular, para mi, el mejor.

  54. D.... S....

One of my favorites-helped keep me beyond cloud nine with a beautiful girl inside and out; we were wildly in love and had inspirational and exhilarating moments I never even knew existed!... but alas it lasted all too short and it ended but I still listened to this song and it makes me think HOPE AND LOVE SPRINGS ETERNAL and I didn't give up on love and found thank God I think the best woman in the world in countless ways beyond my ability to believe and I am in awe of her but she is a rock and has convinced me God really IS looking after me and I had my share of lows like everybody but noone lifts my soul up and strengthens my belief in love as much as the profound incredible magnificent Stevie Wonder-you and your love filled music will live forever on the highest plateau...

    D.... S....

WOW! My sentiment exactly! No better artist!

  55. J.... ....

this album gave me "hospital ity" :] Thank You very much, Stevie !!!

  64. s.... ....

@soprano403 Well put, Soprano! I'm a big FFF fan. Remember exactly when it hit the stores: August 1974.

  65. L.... B....

At 55 i have been a wonder fanatic for years, i always said that ''Superwoman''
and part two of that song was my all time favorite song by Stevie, then i realized
that ''Smile please is. It is like a wonderful old friend the melody is like a warm
blanket that that comforts you no matter how cold the world gets. Thank you
    Wonderman, thank you!!

  66. l.... b....

    @wy424
How can we disagree. This is a phenomenal song

  67. F.... I....

@superviewer I wonder...surely Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone (perhaps with Larry Graham and "The Family") had various encounters. I guess their times just missed each other. By the time Stevie was at his "best"--73ish--Sly had already flown too close to the sun and crashed. A toast to the what-could-haves^^

  68. s.... ....

@forestian728 My next step is to look into the inspiration of Sly - I haven't gotten this far yet (-:

  69. F.... I....

well stated...Sly and the Family Stone were and still are terribly profound--look at what they did to Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and just about everyone else. I personally find it very hard to move too far away from the music of Sly and Stevie, in particular. Two gems of western cilivization.

  70. F.... I....

well stated...Sly and the Family Stone were and still are terribly profound--look at what they did to Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and just about everyone else. I personally find it very hard to move too far away from the music of Sly and Stevie, in particular.

  71. k.... ....

@wy424 Congradulations for being so wise @ 19...Old School has a character that is unmatched!! Thx for the post!!

  72. s.... ....

Stevie Wonder's a musical genious. I got all of his albums motherf...... (-: On inspiration Sly Stone obviously was one inspiration for Stevie's golden age. If you don't know you should listen to some Sly and the Family Stone albums and come back to Stevie.

  73. K.... ....

@cbmuzik Obviously Stevie doesn't "dance", but if you listen to the music, the vocal intonations, the instruments used in Michael's early work- especially w/ the Jackson 5 in the late 70's & early 80's, its ALL Stevie Wonder. On the song "You Haven't Done Nothing" off the "Fulfillingness First Finale" album, he uses the J5 on background vocals. Michael raved about working w/ Stevie in the studio & how much he learned from that experience. Listen 2 vocalists today- all u hear is Stevie Wonder

    K.... ....

one Can dance in his head

  74. l.... b....

    @cuseheart
    Yes.

  75. l.... b....

    @jamesbrown69
Yes, ''Creepin'' is one of the greatest songs ever recorded with it's every components.
''Smile please'' is also excellent and great song, classical Stevie.

  76. G.... T....

    Truth in Love :)

  77. B.... ....

If you're agnostic, Stevie is the doorway to belief in some greater reality.
Yes, the world is harsh and full of brutality, but SIMULTANEOUSLY it offers
the beauty of Stevie and his music. It's always there. When you avert your eyes from
the horrors, and pause to reflect, there will always be Stevie and his glorious music!

    B.... ....

    That's a lovely sentiment

  78. k.... ....

@nidiaaw They're both geniuses to me....Sorry! And you were a little late on Stevie Huh. The man's been a genius since Music Of My Mind. Innervisions certified it. Songs cemented it.

    k.... ....

I BELIEVE EVERYTHING HE MAD FROM 1971 THROUGH 2005 WAS A MASTERPIECE BUT I BELIEVE HE GOT EVEN BETTER AS AN ARTIST IN THE 1980S EVEN THOUGH THE 1970S WAS HIS CLASSIC PERIOD. IN THE 1980S HE WAS EVEN MORE GIFTED .BUT I SAY IT'S HIS CLASSIC PERIOD IN THE 1970S BECAUSE HE WAS SO DEEP AT A YOUNG AGE

  79. d.... ....

True dat. To me, Fullingness First Finale is second only to Songs in the Key of Life, and a very close second at that. These songs really take me back.

  80. k.... ....

So what you're saying is nobody can like Jay-Z and Stevie? It has to be one or the other. And if you think Jay ain't a genius your sadly mistaken

  81. R.... ....

dang, dang, dang!...lol..this was my song!...ooppss! still is my song!

  82. J.... H....

    Thank you sister.

    Sy-

    Certified.

  83. D.... J....

    i agree 100%

  84. J.... H....

Girl, please there's always time for Fulfillingness First Finale, you know the deal this isn't Jay-z o.k. I feel sorry for these rap fans they will never have the pleasure of waiting for the release of Innervisions's, Song's In the Key of Life, Hotter Than July, etc, etc, etc, Super Genius.

    Sy-

  85. d.... d....

ACTUALLY every 70's album he did is inceredible and art. If u can put music on display in a museum his 70/s albums should be on display. So masterful in singin and musicality!

  86. C.... ....

This is such a beautiful song. i remember when I first brought this album . This opening track really did bring a smile to my face . Such a sweet melody.

    Dave

  87. J.... H....

    True that.

    Sy-

  88. 2.... ....

    ok. thanks

  89. w.... ....

But, there is music that, for the most part, only people who grew up with know about. Actually, as I'm replying back to you, I'm listening to Superwoman... All I can say about that song is.... nothing! lol I can't say a thing because Stevie just hits a chord with you. For someone who is visually blind, he sees the world clearer than others would. I just feel blessed to know that there was only one boxset in the store and I have it. I really do feel as if I just bought something priceless.

  90. w.... ....

It's funny that you replied back to me now, because on Friday I bought "Stevie Wonder: At the Close of the Century". It's a 4 disc box set of 70 Stevie songs.
I have always listened to Stevie. My mom always had the old school R&B radio stations on and I knew at a young age that Stevie was something special. I always knew about the obvious hits like Do I Do, Superstition, Signed Sealed Del., etc.

  91. w.... ....

I bought it from Amazon. You can try to check your electronic stores to see if they have it, because there are some cases that they do. But, if you just want to get it ASAP, go online.

  92. 2.... ....

so where did u get his album?

  93. w.... ....

It was after I heard Stevie sing "They Won't Go When I Go" that I decided to look for that song. Considering I don't buy music digitally, I decided to buy "Fullingness" because I liked the song so much. Have and behold, I am in love and awe over this album! I am SO VERY happy that I bought it! I've listened to Smile Please all day long! I am 19 and love old school soul. I consider to Stevie be the Mozart of our time. You can agree or disagree. I don't care. All I know is that Stevie is genious!!

  94. L.... K....

This is the best album of Stevie's by far! We listened to it alot in 75+ in the post hippie era in AUSTIN, Texas! All us blues afficianados listened to it! It's lovely...Lynne

  95. I.... F....

So TRUE and well said. To me this is Stevie's BEST ever!

  96. d.... ....

Totally, completely agree! I've been saying for years that "Fulfillingness" is probably Stevie's most under-rated works. Looking back, it's on a par, in many ways, with his "Songs in the Key of Life." While Stevie cannot "see" things in the same way we do, his VISION is truly immense!

  97. c.... ....

Stevie reportedly broke down at two of his concerts in the past week. I saw a news clip of him singing a song he wrote for MJ from Off the Wall.

  98. n.... ....

Oh, my, strange you should mention Michael... I wonder what Stevie thinks about him?

  99. J.... H....

And what's the problem brother? Were they regular or super pro keds? Ya Know, they don't nothin' about that baby.

    Sy-

You had two certified genius, you lost one in 2004, now you only have one left. Still Steveland Hardaway Judkins Morris on May 13, 1950-Pressent, certified genius.

I was a little white 8 year old from Nebraska, and fell in love with this album. i dreamed of Stevie playing the school gym. I have one album framed in my house, and this is it. Music has never been more beautiful than this. Timeless. I love you Stevie!
