Wonder, Stevie - Living For The City Lyrics

A boy is born in hard time Mississippi
Surrounded by four walls that ain't so pretty
His parents give him love and affection
To keep him strong moving in the right direction
Living just enough, just enough for the city...ee ha!

His father works some days for fourteen hours
And you can bet he barely makes a dollar
His mother goes to scrub the floor for many
And you'd best believe she hardly gets a penny
Living just enough, just enough for the city...yeah

His sister's black but she is sho 'nuff pretty
Her skirt is short but Lord her legs are sturdy
To walk to school she's got to get up early
Her clothes are old but never are they dirty
Living just enough, just enough for the city...um hum

Her brother's smart he's got more sense than many
His patience's long but soon he won't have any
To find a job is like a haystack needle
Cause where he lives they don't use colored people
Living just enough, just enough for the city...
Living just enough...
For the city...ooh,ooh
[repeat several times]

His hair is long, his feet are hard and gritty
He spends his life walking the streets of New York City
He's almost dead from breathing in air pollution
He tried to vote but to him there's no solution
Living just enough, just enough for the city...yeah, yeah, yeah!

I hope you hear inside my voice of sorrow
And that it motivates you to make a better tomorrow
This place is cruel no where could be much colder
If we don't change the world will soon be over
Living just enough, just enough for the city!!!!

La, la, la, la, la, la,
Da Ba Da Da Da Da Da Da
Da Da Da Da Da Da
Da Ba Da Da Da Da Da Da Da
[Repeat to end]

When I hear this song, I immediately think of Jungle Fever; when Wesley Snipes went to go find the color television that Samuel L. Jackson stole from his mother's house. So now, I think about the crackhouse when I hear this song. Nonetheless, it's a masterpiece.

Although it’s an amazing song u lot saying like oh he could see all the inequalities in the world even though he’s blind u lot need to remember he wasn’t always blind and he was living in America so he has seen it

That's mama's record right there! I can remember when I was 4 years old, In 1973 of November at that time, when a red 1964 Dodge van was selling 45 rpm records, & a speaker was on top of the van, playing Stevie Wonder's "Living For The City" version of It, & she bought It on the 45 rpm. She plays It & plays It almost everyday, on a Solid State compatible stereo record player+ 8 track player. I can never forget this memory of this record here! The best part that I love of what Stevie's words are saying Is "His parents give, him love & affection. To keep him strong, moving In the right direction.Living just enough, just enough, for the city." Yes! Stevie can put a lot of expression and feeling through every scene & song! He's telling this song as It always Is &, always will be done.I know my mama pick this record than any records there Is. Hands down to Stevie's greatest song! And hands down to my mother's picking this 45 rpm record! Best times! Enough said!💿🎧🎼🎹🎤🎵🎶🎆🌟💥🔥😂🙏🌎🔝🆙👍💯😎👀👋💨

Strange looking back. I don't know why, but I was invited to Setvie's new years party in 73. I'm Canadian and got lost trying to find Maxwell's Kansas City where a large group of us were meeting up . Arriving late and being a nobody, I couldn't really ask, " Hey has anyone got Stevie's address? " So we headed back to Ossining, where we were staying with an old guy Freddie Sesler.
There were no taxis at the train station, so we called a cab and were told there was a race riot going on and we were on the wrong side of the front lines, to barricade ourselves in the washroom at the train station until help arrived.

It did and crossing the lines I saw so much hate as we drove through demonstrators throwing bricks and fire bombs. The driver must have hit and run over many as she plowed through the crowd. New York. I still look back and wonder. How and why he invited me to his new years party. Still love the song. I left out a lot of the story, cuz it's the night before Christmas now. 2019. Canadians didn't know about that kind of hate at the time.
