Wonder, Stevie - Big Brother Lyrics

Your name is big brother
You say that you're watching me on the tele,
Seeing me go nowhere,
Your name is big brother,
You say that you're tired of me protesting,
Children dying everyday,
My name is nobody
But I can't wait to see your face inside my door

Your name is big brother
You say that you got me all in your notebook,
Writing it down everyday,
Your name is I'll see ya,
I'll change if you vote me in as the pres,
The President of your soul
I live in the ghetto,
You just come to visit me 'round election time

I live in the ghetto,
Someday I will move on my feet to the other side,
My name is secluded,
we live in a house the size of a matchbox,
Roaches live with us wall to wall,

You've killed all our leaders,
I don't even have to do nothin' to you
You'll cause your own country to fall

DELICIOUS is the only word I can think of about this song! But, then again, that is expected of The Legend. Saw him in concert years ago! Far out, man! Play it LOUD and proud!

  22. T.... B....

great song whose relevance remains unchanged

  23. P.... ....

I was way too young to appreciate this. this was the B- side to You Haven't Done Nothing single. I didn't know what Stevie was talking about. I had wait until I got older to go back in his music

  24. a.... ....

    Golden goat

  25. B.... F....

I had "Talking Book" when I was very young. On vinyl. I remember hearing this song for the first time. It was my first taste of politics, and bigotry, and race, and poverty. I absolutely froze as I listened to it. It changed everything. I remember noticing then that Stevie Wonder's voice has a very sad tone in the song, until the end, and at the end, he's simply angry.

  26. K.... H....

    Pure Genius!

  27. J.... T....

It is still amazes me how talented this man is.

  28. b.... ....

Quite possibly his best song, and that's saying a lot 'cuz Stevie made all the best songs...

    b.... ....

I agree.  This may be the greatest statement from a man of many great statements.

    b.... ....

@bodhi561 his best song is As

    b.... ....

I need to clarify that with Stevie there are about 30 best songs. Best, Bester, Besterer; that's how it works with Stevie.

    b.... ....

I agree! I LOVE this song

  29. G.... J....

Do you think Stevie read 1984?... oh wait

    G.... J....

Maybe...Do you think George Orwell heard "Big Brother?"

    G.... J....

@2215bee to answer your question he passed away in 1950 !!  so NO!  but I'm  sure  Stevie had this in mind when he wrote this  it's one of those stories where a great many people  seem to be familiar  with without having actually read it!!  I  remember seeing the movie  [with one of SIR RICHARD BURTON'S last  performances]  it might not be for all tastes , the FILM/ graphic novel  V for vendetta [also featuring JOHN HURT]  is a contemporary expansion on that story  and getting back to the song Brilliant !!  Stevie  even though he's blind makes us question what we see and hear in the media!!  ENJOY  AND BE SAFE OUT THERE!!

    G.... J....

THIS IS REALITY.... ORWELL WAS JUST AWARE

    G.... J....

@Harvey Lee DUH even if the author is dead you can still read their work and Stevie is a prolific reader using Braille.

    G.... J....

I  wasn't questioning IF   Stevie is intelligent or not he obviously is !   just riffing on how powerful the song is and I'm also only vaguely familiar with what stories inspired this !     enjoy and stay warm LUV!

  30. f.... ....

I'm sure Dave is secure in his self image regarding his musicianship...There's only a competition in the minds of twits like you.

  31. R.... ....

Stevie said Your name is Big Brother YOU! Killed All are leaders, I don't have to do nothing to you YOU caused your own country to fall. Babylon is Falling Falling Dam Devil. and these Devil's had Children who love to say '' I didn't do it, well guess what You're gonna pay for your fathers sin. Thus saith THE LORD.

  32. S.... B....

yeah sing it stevie, the time is now, u were an early teacher of mine, thankyou

  33. M.... ....

This has approval of all people !! Religious or otherwise..Peace from Canada ...

    t.... ....

AMEN! You can say that again!

  35. a.... ....

If your body doesn't move during this song, you are dead.

  36. R.... T....

Lord....let me die before Stevie...I would cry too much if he left us.

MJ, Luther....it's hard to take another hit.

  37. K.... ....

Too many people are blind to the truth......Stevie tells the truth and can see it all.

  38. T.... D....

Stevie Wonder is the sound of my childhood.. I can close my eyes and listen to his music and it takes me back to good times, with family, being outdoors, loving life. Anyone that cant appreciate this music doesnt have a soul! Thank you Stevie for the Love you have given thru your music~

  43. T.... W....

You're right, turntapzap! Stevie was, and still is, a musical genius. I can't play keyboards like that--and I can SEE!

  44. M.... L....

What did Stevie know about this in 1972? Damn....

  45. E.... ....

@brendonkas Wonderland Band > Dave Matthews Band.

  46. G.... ....

And I hope you guys dont stay on the surface. GO DEEP the lyrics... he's talking about something very important, something that concerns us all : The future of the Earth

  47. G.... ....

Stevie is one of the best Musicians that the Earth has ever had.
Eventhough I'm not sure he's 100% Earthling. Peace

  48. w.... ....

I was 11 in '72 and this album blew me away!

  49. C.... G....

Ever time I heard that song I think of South Africa during the Apartheid era. I remember playing it months after the Soweto riots.

  50. p.... ....

I was 14 years old in 1972 Loving this song!!!

  51. 5.... ....

love this song, the transition from superstitious into this is unbelievably perfect.

  52. D.... K....

@godhelp2009 Did you go to my chanle or just write something judgmental and mean first. I am a blind jazz soul americana artist with a life long commitment to music. It all started with Wonders's music. May god help the judgmental.

  53. m.... s....

i remember when i was about 20 i had a record player and 2 huge speakers on either side of my bed, i'd lay in bed and listen to this over and over.

  54. b.... ....

but, someday i will move on my feet to the other---totally bad 2:18 - 2:34 best 16 seconds on the album

  55. b.... ....

@fantasticfour61 even if he were a sighted man he is still very sightful

  56. k.... ....

gotta love the way the harmonica sounds like it's crying

  57. D.... K....

I love his music and his politics. He is a big part of why I sound like I do. If you like his music you'll love mine Dayan Kai

  58. R.... R....

@JAYFARRELL31. LOL Thats ......roaches live with us wall to wall. Reminds me of my best friend Leon Huntley. When we were teenagers he came by my house and was singing .....Take a can of biscuits. The song he was TRYING to sing was .....TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS.

  59. u.... ....

    @lilton25 fo' sho'!!!!!

  60. M.... A....

president of your soul... so true they make so many decisions for us and get to decide the morality of the country... impressive statement Stevie, so smart.

  61. p.... ....

    @turntapzap Word.!

  62. J.... S....

@classy1973 that's cuz blind people can hear and sense things we take for granted... when someone speaks ... most of the time we are distracted by what we see and not what we are hearing ....

  63. q.... ....

Stevie is simply amazing!! Even after all of these years, his music still sounds fantastic!! His music is truly timeless.

  64. l.... ....

talking book best album of all time hands down

  65. L.... ....

Man that harmonica is telling a story of its own!

  66. p.... ....

I am simply not aware of better harmonica work than this. Absolutely outstanding. This song could have been #1 on the charts since its release and it would still be underrated.

    p.... ....

And, he has blessed many other artists as guests on their a;bums with that magical harmonica.

  67. A.... J....

When I listen to this song, I feel like someone is watching me over my shoulder, and tapping my phone calls. And, even when I run and hide in the closet, it still feel like someone is watching. I just have the weirdest feelings til the song goes off.

  68. E.... ....

The message is as powerful today as it were in 1972 because somethings have remained exactly the same through all the changes, advancements, and improvements made over time. A great meaning song from a great genious.

  69. E.... ....

    You killed all our leaders
I don't even have to do nothing to you,
You've caused your own country to fall.

The last two lines summarize today's society.

  70. o.... ....

This song takes me back to a place when I knew what was real and what was fake. They don't make music this powerful today. It is so relevant 38 years later. Stevie Wonder= Genius..

  71. R.... ....

This song is so meaningful on so many levels. Look at these lyrics!

    Your name is big brother
You say that you're watching me on the tele,
    Seeing me go nowhere,
    Your name is big brother,
You say that you're tired of me protesting,
    Children dying everyday,
    My name is nobody
But I can't wait to see your face inside my door

  72. b.... ....

eat your heart out Dave Matthews Band 30 years before you even existed STEVELAND MORRIS IS THE BEST EVER!

  73. t.... ....

He tickles that clavinet that it sounds like a guitar. Nobody touches his shit.

    t.... ....

turntapzap what he was able to accomplish with analog synthesis with sounds that artists of today deem cheesy is amazing. his very touch and his knack for becoming the instrument that he was emulating is the true genius. I think Stevie could produce an album using a 400.00 Casio synth and make even the most basic sounds come to life. If people would really listen they would learn a lot. this album and Inner Visions are better than a music college for teaching song arranging. He and Prince have a few albums that are truly educational. Dirty Mind and Controversy are like Stevie's Talking Book and Inner Visions on their song arranging and musicianship and political tones. They are both great artists and teachers.

  74. m.... ....

When he whips out that harmonica, it takes you to another world.

  75. G.... ....

HAHA..trust obama..haha..every president has been shady to some extent, cause they're human...politics is devilish..it's public affairs for private advantage...

  76. s.... 0....

Wow, fantastic comment. So true and beautiful, well said.

  77. s.... ....

This is my favorite S. Wonder cut of all time. This sums a lot of things up over a dope beat. Musically and lyrically exceptional.

  78. c.... ....

You've killed all our leaders, I don't have to do nothing to you ,you'll cause your own country to fall!!!" so true!!

  79. m.... ....

great song. He's blind, but he can play the piano so very very good! Just amazing...
    LOVE YOU STEVIE!

  80. g.... ....

this song maks my eyez tear up

  81. F.... F....

im so happy i got to hear this.

  82. g.... b....

I think he was talking about Bush's Economy plan.

  83. 6.... ....

I listen to all his stuff...this album is so, well, soulful. (Does Stevie even appreciate it as much as I?)
When my guitar teacher brought me "Little Stevie's" original autograph as a gift in 1972...well, needless to say I still have it.

  84. C.... ....

Grew up listening to this... Didn't know what he was talking about then..... Do now! Thanks Stevie!! I love U!! :-)
