Wings - Helen Wheels Lyrics

Said farewell to my last hotel it never was much kind of abode
Glasgow town never brought me down when i was heading out on the road
Carlisle city never looked so pretty, and the kendal freeway is fast
Slow down driver, wanna stay alive, i wanna make this journey last

Helen (helen) hell on wheels
Ain't nobody else gonna know the way she feels
Helen (helen) hell on wheels
And they never gonna take her away

M6 south down liverpool, where they play the west coast sound
Sailor sam, he came from birmingham, but he never will be found
Doin' fine when a london sign, grees me like a long lost friend
Mister motor won't you check her out, she's gotta take me back again

Helen (helen) hell on wheels
Ain't nobody else gonna know the way she feels
Helen (helen) hell on wheels
And they never gonna take her away

Got no time for a rum and lime, i wanna get my right foot down;
Shake some dust off of this old bus, i gotta get her out of town
Spend the day upon the motorway, where the carburettors blast;
Slow down driver, wanna stay alive, i wanna make this journey last

Helen (helen) hell on wheels
Ain't nobody else gonna know the way she feels
Helen (helen) hell on wheels
And they never gonna take her away

Say bye-bye.....fade out

    l.... l....

    West coast sound....

    l.... l....

@Jeff Baker: I didn't know that ... that it was the West Coast sound, but it is one of my favorite Wings songs. I also like "Goodnight Tonight" a lot.

    l.... l....

I was just quoting that part of the song. Love this tune. :)

  20. R.... M....

I'll always remember this song, as it was the first song I had heard off the album Band On The Run. I hadn't had a chance to hear the album yet, and this song was being played on the radio. Of course the album is fantastic-the tempo changes virtually on every song, are mind blowing.

  21. G.... B....

Some people talk about their mother having a green thumb? Paul has a gold thumb, Rock on Paul

    L.... C....

La Co ain’t nobody else gonna know the way that feels 😂

    L.... C....

Wikipedia lists 545 songs written by Paul, 193 written with John. Also says he had 43 songs which sold one million or more records between 1962 and 1978. Now, do I trust you or Wikipedia more?

  30. R.... P....

Great song was ten years old at the time still great today

  31. S.... B....

The initial release from "Band On The Run"-Great song!

  32. c.... b....

    440 in a D150
    390 in a F150

  33. C.... R....

Yall think this sounds like Queen of the Hop??

  34. Y.... O....

    \m/ So much fun!

  35. S.... D....

    wings 's best song IMO

    S.... D....

One of his many great songs.

    S.... D....

    None better, for sure.

  36. E.... D....

ONE OF PAUL'S BEST POST-BEATLE SONGS.

    E.... D....

    ABSOLUTELY.

    E.... D....

    Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

    E.... D....

it sounds a lot like Bobby Darin's " Queen of the Hop ".

  37. G.... ....

McCartney music in the 70's was great, after that not so much.

    G.... ....

I would encourage you to look a bit more into his discography, because for his solo career, McCartney stayed pretty inconsistent throughout although, he did swing more hits in the 70s. But still, Wild Life is one of his worst albums and Flowers in the Dirt and Flaming Pie are two of his best (just thinking between 70s and 80s and 90s). If you especially like the sound on Helen Wheels, I would recommend listening to Run Devil Run, which is a covers album but shows how much Paul really can rock, also parts of Flowers in the Dirt I bet you would like? Just judging off the 12 words of comment.

    G.... ....

Gleanerman You're an idiot. You obviously are very shallow.

  38. G.... ....

    love this song.

  39. J.... F....

    This is extraordinary

  40. S.... O....

great 70s wings pop single, now the rest of you all go away......please.

  41. K.... S....

You can`t compare The Beatles with Sir Paul, Wings, John Lennon, George Harrison or Ringo! For they`re all as one.

    K.... S....

    did you mean Faul?

  42. c.... ....

this album is better than most of the Beatles discography, fuckin great music
SLOW DOWN WANNA MAKE THIS JOURNEY LAST
    HELL ON WHEELS

    c.... ....

cmz8706 I love it but no, not better than White Album, Abbey Rd, Sgt. Pepper, Revolver or Rubber Soul

  43. M.... H....

THIS SONG MAKE ME FEEL ALIVE , AND BRINGS BACK GOOOOD MEMORIES ...

  44. G.... B....

Amazing, just barely two chords. Wore out my guitar this day?

  45. a.... ....

My God, compare this to the crap he would do later like Let 'Em In or Silly Love Songs...

    a.... ....

    +alworkedup Lol irony is real.

    a.... ....

+alworkedup I don't mind Let 'Em In actually. It's catchy little ditty. But yeah, I don't like Silly Love Songs :\

    a.... ....

+alworkedup Both good songs! McCartney couldn't stick to rock and roll forever, as good as his rock songs still are. He's actually a very talented songwriter who has managed to stick around, although I can't say I'm a big fan of his latest album... Maybe I should listen to it again. Memory Almost Full was good.

    a.... ....

I find "New" improves with repeated listens, especially the back half, although it doesn't match Memory Almost Full. Hell, if you want what New was like when it was good, listen to Flowers in the Dirt.

    a.... ....

alworkedup WRONG! THOSE R GREAT TOO! TOO TOO TOO!!!!

  46. B.... D....

I had a 55Bel-Air w. a 409 running thru a Muncie 4 spd.- I named her "Hellen Wheels" before this song was even written-

    B.... D....

    Bill Datz cool

    B.... D....

@creepyzeek Why? It isn't a ridiculously unlikely thing. In fact I bet hundreds of people named their cars Helen wheels before this song was written.

    B.... D....

    @Eli Hopf

Meh, I think that name became popular after this song was put out. The original saying was hell on wheels, wings made Helen wheels the new name to call their cars. Fact.

    B.... D....

creepyzeek1  Well no shit the original saying was hell on wheels, it still is. But do you really think that nobody thought of "Helen" rather than "Hell" before this song came out?

    B.... D....

    @Eli Hopf

well, let's just agree this is a kick ass song. we're so sorry, Uncle Albert. Another favorite of mine.

  47. a.... ....

    James Coburn!!!  :)  :)

  48. D.... G....

The ending part of the song is just like Sending out an SOS part of Message in a Bottle by the Police.

    D.... G....

    Which song is older.

    D.... G....

    How is that?

  49. P.... ....

    A great little rocker

  50. d.... ....

My oldest brother (55 yrs old) and myself 44 yrs and holding are and will probably be Helen Wheels till the day we die : )

  51. B.... B....

Actually Helen Wheels was the nickname for his Range Rover at the time.

    B.... B....

    Land Rover!

    B.... B....

Just as Martha was the name of his dog .....

    B.... B....

The best pop-Rockin he did since the Beatles

    B.... B....

In the official video they are driving a rolls Royce

  52. a.... ....

    Great rocker  :)

    a.... ....

This is about as hard rockin' as Paul ever got  :)

    a.... ....

    +alworkedup Rockshow? Junior's Farm?

    a.... ....

Nothing compares to Monkberry Moon Delight!

  53. d.... ....

PitchToTheRhino1, this song was released as a single only outside the USA.  Only in the USA was this song added to the Band on the Run album.  What is meant by first is that it was released as a single before both Jet and Band on the Run.  Also, even the original American release of the Band on the Run album omits the lyrics to Helen Wheels.

  54. P.... ....

A great tune, but hard to understand how this was the first single over "Band on the Run" (#4) and "Jet" (#2)..... maybe the #3 single.... but not the first :-*

    P.... ....

It’s because in the UK, it wasn’t on the album

  55. J.... B....

Hell yes!! Thanks Paul, thanks Alejandro!

  56. B.... 6....

Lol it's supposed to be Hell On Wheels

  57. A.... P....

Saludos a Sir Paul desde Chile...

  58. i.... ....

Thank you very much for this. The Band on the Run remaster sounds great.
