Williams Jr., Hank - At The First Fall Of Snow Lyrics

I talked with a stranger - so sad and forlorn
His garments were sackcloth - all tattered and torn
He told me a story - of sorrow and woe
His heart went to heaven - at the first fall of snow

He spoke of his angel - a dear, baby girl
He loved every footstep - he loved every curl
But she went to heaven - just one year ago
The angels came for her - at the first fall of snow

He still had the dolly - that she used to love
He held and caressed it - and gazed up above
He whispered my baby - You're waiting, I know
I'll bring you, your dolly - at the first fall of snow

And there as I listened - my eyes filled with tears
I knew she was part of - his happier years
His frail body trembled - he spoke soft and low
I'll be with my baby - at the first fall of snow

I patted his shoulder - my feelings to hide
He couldn't know - I was crying inside
He smiled as we parted - 'cause he didn't know
That we lost our baby - at the first fall of snow

This song l heard when l was a teenager and l loved it ! No one can write songs like this man ! The words tears you apart ! He tells you a story ! His real life ! Love this man !

This is the saddest county song I have ever heard. It speaks volumes about the child and infant mortality rate before we had things like vaccines and antibiotics.

I love all the old stuff. Hank Sr, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty etc... Today's country music doesn't appeal to me at all.

I listen to several genres of music, Classic Rock, Rock, Alternative, Grunge, Rap (older stuff), The Oldies, and Classic Country Music. My favorites, not in a particular order.

Hank was one of a kind .still love to listen to him.

Lending a listening ear to a person in distress can be a real act of kindness. You are really helping that person maybe more than you realize. I know this from personal experience and that is the picture i get from this song..

  5. R.... J....

Love that very sad song. Hank Williams was the greatest!
    Thank you for sharing!
"If the good Lord's will'n , and the Creeks don't rise, we'll see ya again b'fore long".

You take the voice of country music and combine it with a story and what do you get? A country classic. A tragic story told in a song in that unmistakable style of Hank's.

Time to hide and cry after a couple of beers... Hold your youngins a little tighter tonight. It wasn’t too long ago that poor folks lost their babies over sicknesses like the flu and colds every winter.

I remember hearing this on an old floor model wooden radio and I loved this song and would look in the back of the radio trying to see Hank Williams standing back there. That was many years ago and the song has not changed over the years.

I have listened to Hank since the early `50,one of the best singers there is. We don`t have any new singers that even come close to Hank. Guess a couple of my favorites are Wedding Bells & Mansion on the Hill. I like all of his music. To bad we lost him at such a early age.

  23. L.... C....

Love to hear music that is real music. B Crites

  24. A.... L....

Back when Hank Sr. was alive, it was fairly common for babies and small children to die of infectious diseases (like diptheria and flu) when winter weather arrived - this is why today we vaccinate children to prevent them from getting such diseases.

  25. C.... J....

Nobody can sing a tear jerker like Hank

this song makes me cry , my fiancee lost her first , the pain she goes through each day , each time she cries on my shoulder, saddens me , I wipe her tears and try to let her know hes up in heaven looking down , and that it's alright, I let her know I love her , god blessed us though with some good news and the fear that it will happen again is scary , it's a touchy song to me it's like almost all of his songs I can relate to, I lost my mom just before mothers day , I suffered from drinking , and there's been times when it was just me and my guitar. no country singer these days would understand, there's a few musicians though who actually write god songs that I can relate to and I'll give them credit , but I don't like the style of music, I love Hank Williams and George Jones.

what has happened to country music?! why has REAL talent been thrown out the window?

    a.... c....

+austin craig they are still great players, they just play shitty songs... based on what the bigshots can sell..

    a.... c....

It all has  to do with money , nothing else !!!!!

    a.... c....

austin craig Guess you haven't heard of Cody Jinks.

  53. R.... S....

This is one of Hank's best. I don't know when this version was recorded. . The original recording I had heard was just Hank, and his guitar. This is definitely a finished product.

Richard Skola -I show the first recording of this with just his guitar to be Aug'48-May '49. Then with the band on Mothers Best Flour Show #6-42 Jan-Mar '51. This would be his first time with Jerry Rivers and Don Helms. The way the steel starts out does not sound like Don Helms. Has a high pitch to it. The first with his guitar were on the Johnnie Fair Syrup Shows over KWKH Shreveport, La. from Aug '48-May '49.There were 33 of these type songs that were later put with a band. Wrote by Lorene Rose.

    R.... S....

@Bas Binsbergen To someone who wants it, the record is PRICELESS! I have a copy in good+ condition. If you collect records, a good 78 is really NOT good. It is grey & hisses as its played. I AM going to replace mine with, hopefully, a V++ or E copy when I find one on eBay.

  54. B.... M....
