Williams, Andy - Christmas Bells Lyrics

Ring Christmas bells
Merrily ring
Tell all the world
Jesus is king
Loudly proclaim
With one accord
The happy tale
Welcome the lord

Ring Christmas bells
Sound far and near
The birthday of
Jesus is here
Herald the news
To old and young
Tell it to all
In every tongue

Ring Christmas bells
Toll loud and long
Your message sweet
Heal and prolong
Come all you people
Join in the singing
Repeat the story
Told by the ringing

Ring, ring, and ring Christmas bells
Ring, ring, and ring Christmas bells

Loudly proclaim
With one accord
The happy tale
Welcome the lord

Ring Christmas bells
Ring Christmas bells
Merrily ring
Tell all the world

Loudly proclaim
With one accord
The happy tale
Welcome the lord

Ring Christmas bells
Sound far and near
The birthday of
Jesus is here
Herald the news
To old and young
Tell it to all
In every tongue

Ring Christmas bells
Toll loud and long
Your message sweet
Heal and prolong
Come all you people
Join in the singing
Repeat the story
Told by the ringing

Ring, ring, and ring Christmas bells
Ring, ring, and ring Christmas bells

Loudly proclaim
With one accord
The happy tale
Welcome the lord

Ring Christmas bells
Ring Christmas bells
Merrily ring
Tell all the world
Jesus is king

I like the way how it says "Jesus is king" because that's the main point of Christmas, worshipping Jesus as a king.

  17. M.... M....

This is the version I grew up with.

  18. K.... ....

Does anyone know why this version is completely different from the original? I actually like this one a bit more, but enjoy both very much. Just curious.

    K.... ....

I was wondering the same thing. In a You Tube search this version by Andy Williams is rare (which I love the most). A popular & comparable version of this song is "Ring Christmas Bells".

Its origin comes from a Ukrainian folk song from 1916. It was in 1936 that the "modern" version of the song was written.

Unfortunately, still could not find the reason(s) for the varied Carol of the Bells. I will stick with Andy.

    Andy's lyrics are here: http://www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/andy_williams/carol_of_the_bells-lyrics-219414.html
Andy uses the Nativity based lyrics and should correctly be titled "Ring Christmas Bells".
According to Wikipedia, there are 150 +/- versions.

One of the few Christmas songs that ACTUALLY is about the origin of the Christmas - birth of Jesus Christ! I love it.

    k.... ....

Agreed..instead of silly tunes like Jingle Bells.

    k.... ....

Would make sense if he was actually born around Christmas and it wasn't just a fake holiday stolen from the Pagans because christians needed a holiday too.

    k.... ....

@Robert Page it's not because christians needed a holiday too. It's because the christian faith was becoming popular in the Roman Empire and many people were converting to it. Celebrating the birth of our saviour Jesus Christ on the same day of the "sole invictus" (which means undefeated sun) would have let ex-pagan people understand much more easily the new feast. In fact the feast of the "sole invictus" was about the light of the sun that don't get defeated by darkness, and in a similar way Christmas celebrates the victory of Jesus (which says of himself "I am the light of the world") upon the darkness of sin. Jesus' victory begins with his birth, which is celebrated around the winter solstice, but at that point it's not yet complete; it's completed with his passion, death and resurrection, that is Easter, which we celebrate around the spring equinox, when the light of the day wins over the darkness of night.
Christians have always celebrated the moments of Jesus' salvation throughout the year, concurrently with the seasons, the phases of the sun, the moon and nature.
Taking a pagan feast and making it christian was not for envy or for spite, but because...it made sense. It's didactic: if you want someone to understand something new, you must start with something similar and analogous they already know and that they can handle.
In the end I bet that celebrating the sun never made someone's life better indeed, never changed it for the better... Instead, meeting Jesus and letting him come in your life fills it with Deep meaning, deep joy even when in struggle, and makes you more human, more yourself. I can't find better words because I'm italian, but to me it was worth it replacing the "sole invictus" feast with Christmas.

    Excellent!

    Great song.
