The plink-plonk could easily be an effected pianet, or moog with some splash-back delay, trace of fast phase/chorus. The single line string synth behind it, doesn't sound like a mellotron string to me, it's too linear and soft between the notes, whilst inbetween the two there seems to be an effected Hammond sound with all the top-end drawbars pulled out.
Three different overdubs making that section. They were clearly recording with the record in mind, rather than 'how will we do this live'.

When I answered DCinchi's question, I referred to the CD liner notes, which just list Jay Bennett as playing keyboards. I just went to the wiki page which has more detail, and although the article mentions the use of a mellotron on the album, in the credits for each song it lists Bennett as playing synthesizer on this song, but no mention of mellotron. Do you think it could be a synth instead of mellotron, or a mixture of keyboards, mellotron and synthesizer to achieve that effect?

They used a mellotron quite a bit on this record, which was incredibly popular with a lot of psychedelic bands in the 1960s. I'm pretty sure that's what they were going for with this song -- or the entire record, for that matter.

No exotic instruments were used in this song, Tweedy and Bennett must have just achieved that effect by using keyboards. It does have a "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" quality to it.

Thanks so much for posting. By the way, can you tell me the instrument or type of synch used for the instrumental from 1:40? It was used a lot in the mid60s ( I remember when I was about 4 or 5 and was impressed with the sound).
