Millennial here, lol. I remember my first time seeing The Who, Outsidelands, 2017. I was next to an older guy who was complaining about the new age of music and how everything is digitalized with DJ ser ups that the younger crowd doesn’t know what they’re missing. I wholeheartedly agreed with him and he appreciated my honesty and let me have a puff of his blunt. Little did I know soon after that it was laced with acid, and I swear, the intro between the first and second power chord was some craziest shit I’ve ever experienced, felt like I was floating in space. Trippiest/most awesome experience of my life.

People have already said it, but it bears repeating: Keith Moon's drumming is superlative in this. The writing and guitar playing by Townshend is brilliant, John Entwhistle on bass is incredible and Roger Daltrey's vocals are rightfully legendary; but for me the drumming just stands out. The fills, the rhythms, the just endless invention. It's his ability to maintain a clear rhythm whilst still creating this outpooring of rhythmic ideas that makes him stand out. Definitely there have been drummers who technically could do things in terms of speed or complexity that Moon might not have done; but to me that's not the point. It's making the drums tell a story that makes it worthwhile listening to, and re-listening to, and re-listening to. Try that with most drummers and you'll be bored before you've listened to the track the second time over. With Keith there's always something new to hear. He treated drumming as an artform like an Indian Classical musician or a jazz drummer, but in a way that is super rare in rock or pop.

the Who were a very different band. Entwhistle was the lead player and Townsend the rhythm, and then, well Keith Moon, well regulated in studio and insane live. The first time I saw them live was in a very odd concert in the Oakland ballpark. Opened by the Grateful Dead, followed Up by the Who. Daltry was stripped to the waist, and in probably the best shape of his life, and it tweaked my gayness, big time. My only problem with the performance was the pre-recorded sequencer stuff on "we wont get fooled again" and "baba o'riely" as it prevented improv which the Who were known for.
