Who, The - The Song Is Over Lyrics

The song is over
It's all behind me
I should have known it
She tried to find me

Our love is over
They're all ahead now
I've got to learn it
I've got to sing out

[chorus:]
I'll sing my song to the wide open spaces
I'll sing my heart out to the infinite sea
I'll sing my visions to the sky high mountains
I'll sing my song to the free, to the free
I'll sing my song to the wide open spaces
I'll sing my heart out to the infinite sea
I'll sing my visions to the sky high mountains
I'll sing my song to the free, to the free

When I walked in through the door
Thought it was me I was looking for
She was the first song I ever sang
But it stopped as soon as it began

Our love is over
It's all behind me
They're all ahead now
Can't hope to find me

[chorus]

This song is over
I'm left with only tears
I must remember
Even if it takes a million years

The song is over
The song is over

Who, The The Song Is Over Comments
  1. l.... ....

I save this song for the times i really feel it, b/c i overdo everything, lol, within moderation. This recording is great production, great artistry, astounding music & lyrics put together, but if i analyze the magic of the music, when i listen to it too often, it’s like breaking my own heart.💜✨💫. If The Who we’re singing about ‘the free,’ in such a beautiful & profound way here, when i was 15, i figured i could also Be Free, & so i was. It gave me a lot, a ton, in fact. I just had no idea what i’d put myself up to, lol... But, i could listen to this, for a million years... You all, made me try to find you, & boy, did i ever... It’s the mystery, that made me love you all, so much... b/c you can all do things, that i just could never fathom, how... You all gave me, everything i have...🐲🦚🛸🥳😂🙏🐳💧💖🔆🌍

  9. M.... V....

    And...?

  10. N.... K....

    Daltrey

  11. L.... R....

Moonie on the sticks my personal all time favorite who albums entwistle,Townshend and daltrey were a great fit after taking a good piss on that cement thing sticking out of the ground

  12. u.... ....

it's a great three minute song, gets boring as hell by six minutes.

    u.... ....

    YOU ARE AN IDOIT!

    u.... ....

    @Michael U That's "I D I O T." And no.

  13. C.... K....

this is the best album ever recorded. And I'm vintage. Pete Townshend is a GOD. Pure and simple.

  14. G.... C....

So beautiful. One of the best Who tracks along with the Kids are Alright. I first heard it college back in 1989, because my roomate had the Who's Greatest Hits on Tape. So thankful for him for his taste in music. That was at Ohio University back in the day. We love ya always, Marcus Games.

  15. S.... S....

It’s all behind me. I should have known it. She tried to find me.

  16. J.... m....

theres not a dud on the whole album but yet the album was a failed concept

  17. G.... S....

How many people realize how great a singer Pete Townsend is? He could have been just a vocalist and made it bigtime

  18. M.... C....

This song is calming w/ a brutally honest of a once love lost but with strong logic of confidence a love that once was or could of been..... Perfect.

  19. J.... D....

I wish music was like this today.

  20. L.... B....

Friends tease me and get on my case about how I’m “dating myself” and “showing my age” when I talk about things from the past but I don’t care. I was 18 when the WHO’s NEXT LP by The Who and the Led Zeppelin 4 LP came out and those were great times to live in. I don’t regret for a minute bring around when such great rock artists were in their prime and that’s a fact.

  21. v.... s....

I loved The Who since ai was teenage, now I'm 70 and still my favorite Music

  22. K.... J....

Favorite who song. Woo whoooo! Masterpiece!🌼😊🌼
    .

  23. R.... K....

So many classics on this record but my favorite is actually this song. So sad yet uplifting at the same time on another level. Its over, time to move on

  24. J.... R....

    Best Who song.

  25. A.... K....

    Geez talk about underrated

  26. A.... N....

I like the photo. Sort of an entrance to a bomb shelter. This is post-war Britain that saw their skinny sons surviving rationing and blitzkrieg.

  27. J.... C....

How could anyone in their right mind give this a thumbs down. Really??

  28. H.... w....

such a melancholy song yet so beautiful and true!....just awesome!!!!!

  29. R.... K....

I've always love the Keith Moon drum fills in this song, complex and interesting, driving the song along, and then the way the bass and drums sync up at the end is just brilliant.

  30. C.... S....

The beautiful piano playing strikes a chord (no pun intended)❤️So innocent😊💙Heartfelt😔💙Inspirational🌈☮️💟😇🙏

  31. K.... S....

There's not one time in my life that I heard the song that I did not cry I'm not sure if it's tears of joy tears of Rage or tears of Sorrow

  32. S.... A....

This was my now deceased wife's favorite song. I can see her smiling down on me as I play it.

  33. L.... S....

Finally! I'm in the process of leaving someone... Not easy but this is the song I need to help me get through it☺

  34. J.... M....

    Picasso on the drums. Brilliant.

  35. m.... ....

This album is a real masterpiece.
    It still in my collection.

  38. a.... c....

  39. C.... ....

It’s crazy to think this song came out in 1971 yet sounds like a mid-80s song

  40. C.... K....

A big thanks to my 12th grade creative writing teacher who first shared this with me

  41. E.... B....

    MagistRaL.

  42. A.... K....

    This song is soooo underrated

  43. B.... ....

    Masterpiece of rock

  44. H.... T....

Nicky Hopkins should of been added as he 5th member of the WHO. It's BS that he wasn't .

    H.... T....

He was too busy being the most wanted session player of the era to be tied down to one band. His choice proves where he was happier.

  45. J.... B....

    💙🙏🏽❤️

  46. m.... s....

I was about eleven when I bought this album. It had been out around four years. I sat in a chair in the living room with the giant headphones connected to the hi fi. (Look it up kids😉). I knew I was listening to something great. I had no idea it was a part of the greatest rock and roll ever.
I now give guitar lessons and kids ask me to teach them classic rock. Their parents turn them on to it. A lot of kids like the old classics. It's refreshing.

  47. G.... S....

what a great arrangement. pete can sing so nicely

  48. M.... ....

Quite possibly the most beautiful song ever written.

    "Searching for one note

    Pure and easy

    Playing so free

    Like a breath rippling by"

    M.... ....

it is beautiful well written and great timeless

  49. M.... P....

The Album "WHO's NEXT" is the MASTERPIECE by THE WHO
Every Tune on this Album is perfectly done. Long Live THE WHO

    M.... P....

I personally prefer Quadrophenia, but I do quite like this album.

  50. B.... K....

I love this song. Dear Jesus- send travel angels and grace as the band tours soon. Jesus- many of us listening love you. 👊🏻👍

  51. M.... M....

Is this the end of Lifehouse?

  52. d.... p....

  53. M.... ....

  54. J.... L....

    27 dislikes... 27 fools....

  55. S.... B....

    What a class song

  56. D.... ....

    Entwhistle...

  57. g.... v....

IDGAF what Pete's into. BEST Composer ever.

    g.... v....

Great song and I love the piano solo

  58. D.... G....

The Two greatest years in Rock history were 1971 & 1973 the Who had Two of the Gems

    D.... G....

Absolutely magical times in rock never to be replicated!! I was 14-15 and it was transformative!!

    D.... G....

Dark Side Of The Moon, also a masterpiece

  59. C.... ....

Zeppelin never had a tenth of The Who's live firepower and even less of their emotional range or lyrical intelligence.

    C.... ....

there is no way how to compare different things. Both could make marvelous stuff...

    C.... ....

@Scott Davidson Zeppelin seems to plagiarize rather Jeff Beck and ROd Stewart in the Truth and Bekola albunms

    C.... ....

    @Felipe Castro yep

    C.... ....

@Felipe Castro I know that Willie Dixon sued them because they stole some of his material and there was a gag order placed so he can't discuss how much he won.

    C.... ....

Zeppelin was horrible live. Absolutely horrible!

  60. S.... W....

This is the first time I heard this song/album. I was wary of The Who, as their lyrics touch sore points I would rather be left alone.

  61. R.... ....

Vietnam 1971, this is what we listened to.

    R.... ....

God Bless you, brother. Thank you for your service.

    R.... ....

Played this song on AFN Radio, NEVER.

    R.... ....

Thank you for your Heroism & Service Sir

    R.... ....

Hope you had some good weed or beer to keep the chill going.

    R.... ....

    Thank you brother

  62. I.... 1....

Can’t believe 25 people wanted this song over

  63. b.... t....

real picture of album music and thank god for real music

  64. D.... R....

This American is about ready to admit you guys have the top bands, (not individual artists) of all ... Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, Who, Sabbath, Stones, Crimson, Genesis, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, ....... Libertines ... sheesh, you win. What do we got? Eagles? ... oh ... I forgot for a second I'm a Deadhead, so ... Grateful Dead? Guns and Roses? Pearl Jam? Journey? Van Halen, Metallica? By my rule both Fleetwood Mac and Van Halen should be eliminated because they're based on band member names. No Bruce and his E Street Band, nor Bob and his Silver Bullet Band.

    D.... R....

the hardships of post war Britannia brought out the best in them

    D.... R....

Well you had Lou Reed, Jimi Hendrix, The Beach Boys, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, BB king, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Little Richard...
You have some amazing bluesmen that built what rock music has been

  65. H.... Z....

Over the decades, this song has emerged as the most powerful Pete ever wrote. It builds to deliver the final lines sung by both Pete and Roger a life quest.

  66. H.... W....

There will never be a more perfect keyboard player than Nicky Hopkins. Just listen to the breadth of artistry. This beautiful song, The Stones, She's a Rainbow, Angie, Steve Miller's amazing Baby's House, Jefferson Airplane, Volunteers, Quicksilver, Fresh Air, Led Zeppelin, Boogie with Stu, The Kinks, Suuny Afternoon and oh, did I mention The Beatles? And so many more. This keyboard genius is a one-man Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! How ironic, he's not anywhere near Cleveland. A travesty.

    H.... W....

Nicky was amazing. But it was Ian Stewart who played on "Boogie with Stu", hence the title.

    H.... W....

He’s good, but Rick Wakeman takes it for me.

    H.... W....

    RICK WAKEMAN

  67. H.... Z....

The pre-postlude sung so passionately by Peter:

"The song is over. I'm left with only tears.
I must remember, even if it takes a million years."

followed by the post-postlude sung by Roger:

"The song is over. The song is over. In search of one note, pure and easy, playing so free like a breath rippling by."

has to be absolutely the most intense conclusion to a song ever.

    H.... Z....

You may be right in your quotation, but I had always thought he said "The song is over...excepting one note, pure and easy..."

  68. J.... R....

If the world was ending and everyone was going to die I would go to a music store and steal about 20 Marshall/Hiwatt Double-Stacks and also plug it into a massive PA System. I would put "Who's Next?"on for our final hour, on full volume so the whole city could hear!

  69. C.... N....

How do four men sit down and put all of *that* together??? ... genius.

    C.... N....

Exactly! I was just thinking the same thing!

    C.... N....

5 don't forget Nicky Hopkins on Piano lol

  70. R.... R....

No one gets over the 70's

  71. C.... S....

I was lucky enough to see these guys at Charlton in 76 , just the best , never bettered

    C.... S....

I remember it being 1974, I was 18.. I was there, what a great day!! Loved Lindisfarne too..

  72. K.... K....

I'm pretty hysterical to write about anything, because there are a few Keith Moon / WHO experts who say that Keith Moon did not know how to play the drums properly. I do not actually understand what is right, I understand that I listen to the emotional feeling and, consequently, the music affecting the show. I've listened to it since -67. I watched television almost as straight as John F. Kennedy was executed in Dallas for the US as a dangerous man. I've been in shock ever since. >> If music can not be influenced by politics in the art world, then I can forget all civilization and live away from it. Goodbye.

    K.... K....

It is indeed strange how comments emerge about Keith "not knowing how to play drums." The fact is, with the Who, his style, interpretation, intensity fit perfectly , even intensified the music even though not the traditional method. His goal was "to make the drums sing." It is very hard to find a drummer who can duplicate his style required for this music. He personified the concept of a "lead drummer."

    K.... K....

There is a interview that Pete Townsend gives and he say Keith Moon played his own style , didnt care that it was a 1,2,3,4 beat he played the drums as he saw fit and the rest of the band didn't have a problem with it. Pure genius Townsend called him.

    K.... K....

You sort of have it backwards. Any traditional "proper" drummer would have lessened the effect of this song and practically any of the Who songs. It was Moon's interpretation and his force as a "lead drummer" that made his contribution invaluable. It's kind of like a person who can see an image within a camouflage landscape when no one else can. Other drummers may have greater "skills" but they could not interpret the music and apply their skills to the achieve the effect that Moon was able to do.

    K.... K....

Keith Moon is my all time favorite percussionist. I will put him up against anybody whoever held those two sticks and pounded away.

  73. P.... R....

I wonder if this album cover is from "Hipgnosis"?

    Great poetry....

  75. J.... G....

Great way to end a divorce. I love The Who👍👍

  76. t.... d....

It was my understanding that Pete didn't care for this collection of songs and gave this best ever to their manager to do something with. After I saw the Beatles in Indianapolis, my Dad helped me buy a1961 Premier Drum Set and of course Keith was my man. I saw the Who 4 times. But the Beatles was an unmached live event of all time. The Moon landing is unmached but we
couldn't be there. Keith, I miss your Drums🥁. John too. Pete said he had never seen anybody play like Entwhistle, it worked. Yeah Yeah Yeah. TD Atlanta

    t.... d....

    understood

  77. D.... B....

    Freaking GREAT song.

  78. o.... ....

4:50 to end: to Jupiter and beyond the Infinite

  79. M.... S....

This very well could be the 1 album I would take to a deserted island with electricity!

  80. J.... H....

This song reflects the british spirit. Nobody will do better.

    J.... H....

couldn't agree more , well said

    J.... H....

Yes you are right ,,sad could never be replicated in todays political correct climate of Uk its terrible not to mentionthe invasion

  81. P.... G....

10 dislikes ? wtf ? you are so over.

    P.... G....

    Some people are stupid

  82. u.... ....

Another Townshend lyric that can just break your heart. Pete says what we ALL wish we could say if we could only form up the words.

    u.... ....

The 1st girl I ever truly loved bought this album for my 16th birthday I'm 62 and still have that record. So many memories of young love.

    u.... ....

I wish I could say people should be allowed to keep midgets as pets, but I can't. I wish Pete would write a song about it.

  83. D.... B....

IBest album of all time in my opinion

    D.... B....

I don't if I'd say all time, but it's certainly pretty Damn close IMO.

    D.... B....

Top ten for sure in all the world.

    D.... B....

It's in the top 10 for me

  84. M.... 8....

    "IT IS FINISHED!!!"
    victory for all.

  85. H.... G....

Saddest part of the whole song is when Townshend sings, "Million Years".

  86. H.... G....

Nicky Hopkins on piano really sells this song from the beginiing. Then you get the contrast between Townshend and Daltrey singing basically against each other, beautifully done, Townshend is singing for the song to be over but Daltrey is countering the song continues sealed with the thunderous sound of Moon and upbeat piano, just when you think Townshend wins here comes Daltrey's last verse followed by Moon's seal of unforgettable drum roll. WOW, I mean wow so much in this song over the years and it just gets better and better.

    H.... G....

Wow never thought of it that way. Just gave me chills reading your summary. Brilliant.

    H.... G....

Nicky Hopkins is brilliant on this album . He plays on three songs .

    H.... G....

I'd read your reviews bro, well done.

    H.... G....

Can't forget Moony, He was truly the Master of the Cymbals

  87. j.... e....

    One of the Best

  88. j.... ....

this was the best song on the album. that Nicky Hopkins piano.

    j.... ....

jasonwheel the use of the synthesizer in some of their songs lends it a grave, bleak feel. Awesome

    j.... ....

That says a lot, given the overall top quality of the album. Every tune good.

  89. M.... S....

God I love these guys!!!They sing what I feel!

  90. S.... 2....

Great group, song & album. Timeless.......

  91. C.... C....

That's a song and a half right there...

  92. M.... ....

this song is so sad  yet inspirational.

    M.... ....

The who pours their heart into it and the feeling it gives is wonderous as a true artist one of hope a true song for the ages.

  93. S.... T....

Used to listen to this entire album in my car, parked infant of my house when there was rain SoCal. . . .

  94. N.... D....

Oh God, I can FEEL High School...

  95. A.... F....

Back then I chose this as a theme for High School graduation.'72 Was turned down of course. "Too underground" they claimed.

    A.... F....

So lame of the staff, it would of been perfect. Class of 73 here.

    A.... F....

Now that was very dumb of them.

    A.... F....

Dude, I would totally have picked this for graduation if I could. You wanna know what my class (2019) picked?

Allstar. Fucking Allstar. Everyone picked a shitty meme for our graduation.

    A.... F....

I graduated in 73 from a Catholic school and we all wanted Imagine from John Lennon and they refused because the lyrics said imagine there is no heaven......

    A.... F....

I'm sure they regretted it ...

  96. T.... R....

    I cry a lot

    T.... R....

Me Too, Tim. Wish Those Times Had Never Left!😢

  97. f.... ....

Searching for a note.... pure and easy playing so free tha the wind...

  98. l.... c....

Face it it over! We've all grown older and become jaded. The days of the Doors, jimi, Beatles and the Who vanished in the fog.I thank god I grew up in a time when we had fantastic singers musician's and song writer's. When the teen's of today lookup to Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber i'd pretty much say The Song Is Over.

    l.... c....

+luann caldwell everything is relative. what will the teens be saying 35 years from now . LOL

    l.... c....

+Mike Seltzer Yeah, always makes me laugh when I see comments like that. I love this music too but come on, what people like him are saying now, his parents were saying when he was growing up with this music. To carry on with the stretched song metaphor, he's just playing the same tune.

    l.... c....

+luann caldwell Luann do not worry there music will live on im 28 and my wife is 32 and we love all this wonderful music we both grew up on it that is all our parents listened to and it rubbed off.

    l.... c....

I think you'll find that's changed some and is now not the case... check out the vigilant citizen website. The agenda is now more obvious than it ever was.

    l.... c....

Not quite... I'm 17 and this WILL be my graduation song.
