Who, The - The Real Me Lyrics

I went back to the doctor
To get another shrink.
I sit and tell him about my weekend,
But he never betrays what he thinks.

Can you see the real me, doctor?

I went back to my mother
I said, "I'm crazy ma, help me."
She said, "I know how it feels son,
'Cause it runs in the family."

Can you see the real me, mother?

The cracks between the paving stones
Look like rivers of flowing veins.
Strange people who know me
Peeping from behind every window pane.
The girl I used to love
Lives in this yellow house.
Yesterday she passed me by,
She doesn't want to know me now.

Can you see the real me, can you?

I ended up with the preacher,
Full of lies and hate,
I seemed to scare him a little
So he showed me to the golden gate.

Can you see the real me preacher?
Can you see the real me doctor?
Can you see the real me mother?
Can you see the real me?

  1. a.... ....

    that bass <3

  2. h.... 6....

The bass line in this song was contacted by both Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers, both asking if it would like to lose some of its' fat, but it declined saying, "No, thanks. I'm Quite happy being the fattest bass line the world has or ever will see. Now, piss off, ya wanker."

  3. T.... F....

Can you see the real me ,no one ever will

  4. h.... ....

Everyone fell out of their chairs the first time they heard this
thanks to John Entwistle's monster Bass part.

  5. J.... D....

  6. e.... s....

John Entwistle did that bass track in one take and considered it "goofing off". And if you listen close, you hear this thing Moon and Entwistle did that was quite different than the norm. Normally, during a song, the vocalist and guitarist are absorbing most of the track time, with very little cut away for drum and bass. What The Who were original in, is what is happening during Roger's vocals. Usually, the drummer and bass player and keeping time and "building bridges" for the guitarist and vocalist to cross. But Moon and Entwistle do little solos and jams during Roger's vocals before folding back into time keeping for Pete and Roger....Watch the documentary Making of the Album about Who's Next and the producer breaks down tracks so you can hear it. Fascinating.

  10. J.... O....

This tune is utterly ferocious, from a band that was already right snarly. Love it.

  11. R.... C....

Most killer song from the most killer band. Discussion is over

  12. 1.... ....

Anyone who thinks the bass is only a rhythm instrument, ask the Ox and listen to this song.!!!!

  13. g.... ....

Um classico do Rock, literalmente em tudo que o Rock pode oferecer!!!

  15. D.... C....

Sounds like Townsend is playing a Telecaster

    D.... C....

No, he played his Gretsch Chet Atkins on this.

  16. S.... ....

In an interview, Entwistle explained how this bass part happened. In the studio, he, Townshend and Moon would run through the track getting their parts together, learning the cues and transitions before doing the take.
Entwistle said he would get his part right pretty quickly after one or two run throughs but the other two would take longer and Entwistle said he'd so bored waiting for the track to come together he'd just forget about the song and play whatever came into his head figuring he'd do the part properly when the final take was done.
After this take ended, Townshend said that's it, that the take and Entwistle told him it can't be, I wasn't even trying to play it properly. But Townshend said no that's the take.
That's why this one track has such an off the wall bass part. On the rest of the album he's playing more within the songs' parameters but on this one he's just going crazy, chromatic runs up and down, blues licks, jumping up and down the neck, switching octaves like crazy.
And it's all basically a mistake. Genius.

    S.... ....

    ....a bass God.

Crazy that I just learned that the name "Rockers" has nothing to do with music it's a motorcycle thing. It was what we in the USA called "greasers" back in the day.

  69. S.... S....

    Always a favorite

  70. S.... T....

I’m probably gonna get death threats for this Lol, but sometimes The Who sounded like Moon and Entwhistle just got new drums and a bass and just wanna play every note possible. If they would have layed back in the cut a little more, I think the brilliance of Pete would have come through even more resulting in bigger hit songs! I’m a huge fan of The Who don’t get me wrong, but it’s always something I thought.

  71. r.... h....

before i knew much i always would say that drummer has big drums big sound orchestral . then i found why.

For years I did not know the WASP version was a cover. I feel like one of those dumb kids who would tell David Bowie how cool it was that he’d do a cover of Nirvana.

  87. M.... O....

This IMO is their best song. There's nothing more one needs to say. It's that good.

  88. B.... B....

  94. R.... L....

Music is supposed to be wild unsafe unpredictable I hate this generic synth pop crap it has no Soul.

    R.... L....

No SOUL ?!? You probably prefer this crappy Rap and those unbearable and show-off rappers, with their inevitable drum beat to 60 per quarter note, their hateful, coarse, misogynist and homophobic lyrics, obsessed with easy money, violence, sex and appearance, with their samples stolen from others and who have completely corrupted the American black music ? Or this "nothingness", that dares to take back the term of "R & B" to crank out its indigent music and those pathetic songs, ridiculously tampered with the Auto-tune and sounding like Austrian Yodel ?
Except in Free jazz, I dont' know any "unsafe" and "unpredictable" music : from Bach to Zappa, from Charlie Parker to Antonio Carlos Jobim or from the Yardbirds to Slipknot, every note is thought. And there's as much "soul" in the Who as in Otis Redding or Billie Holliday. It expresses itself differently, that's all...

  95. K.... S....

damn whew the friggin Who firing on all cylinders...tough

  96. K.... B....

Amazing, music these days can’t even come close.

  97. D.... D....

What they could learn if they heard what we did music of today sucks just saying

  98. G.... C....

The highest energy Rock band EVER.

  99. J.... W....
