Who, The - Naked Eye Lyrics

Take a little dope
And walk out in the air
The stars are all connected to the brain
Find me a woman and lay down on the ground
Her pleasure comes falling down like rain
Get myself a car, I feel power as I fly
Oh now I'm really in control
It all looks fine to the naked eye
But it don't really happen that way at all
Don't happen that way at all

You sign your own name and I sign mine
They're both the same but we still get separate rooms
You can cover up your guts but when you cover up your nuts
You're admitting that there must be something wrong
Press any button and milk and honey flows
The world begins behind your neighbor's wall
It all looks fine to the naked eye
But it don't really happen that way at all
Nah nah no, don't happen that way at all

You hold the gun and I hold the wound
And we stand looking in each other's eyes
It all looks fine to the naked eye
But it don't really happen that way at all

Who, The Naked Eye Comments
  1. L.... J....

    Essential Who in my world.

  2. a.... d....

Why don’t they make songs like this anymore? Spectacular song.

  3. M.... ....

Anyone now which versions have the missing lyric or why it's missing?  I keyed in all the lyrics below but the computer pushed them all together turning Pete's poetry into one long run on vocal. . Hm there must be a trick to it.

  5. S.... M....

    Multiple Whogasms

  6. K.... E....

Art. Pure. The guitar is like warm glowing oil, the drumming is the pulse.

  7. S.... V....

This song is WAY ahead of it's time that's probably why it's so underrated.

    S.... V....

Probably because it's a song that could've been written 5-10 years, or maybe 20 years later by some punk, or grunge band like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or Soundgarden. It's themes of societal alienation, depression, existential angst, feelings of false sense of fame, meaningful life sounds a lot like something the 90s grunge bands would sing about. I also think that's why a lot of the later punk bands and eventually grunge bands would list classic rock bands like the Who, Pink Floyd, and Black Saabath as some of their favorite bands growing up.

  8. F.... M....

How the hell was 'Naked Eye' left of who's next in 71. If they ever did a stronger track, it was My Generation. Its almost as though the band was so pissed and smacked out in the case of Manager Lambert, they just threw eight decent tracks out of about 20 recordd into the mix and released, My own view was as a Double albulm it was too strong and it would have destroyed them though too much adoration. And Townshend and the management sensed that they better noy. I mean some of the live recordings , Moon seems to have become the greatest classical drummer on end or he's possibly druming for Wellingtons army in 1815 or Guderain, Sailor in 44.

  9. J.... J....

    Fuck off

  10. C.... E....

HARD TO BELIEVE THE BAND NEVER REKEASED THIS ORIGINALLY BACK IN 71'. BLISTERING, POWER PACKED, KNOCK OUT.

  11. g.... c....

    That's a killer track 👍

  12. N.... R....

It's unfortunate that video of this conference was not captured, I remember reading somewhere that there was a last minute technical issue with the recording and only audio was recorded.

  13. D.... G....

Somebody explain why over one- half of the third verse of "Naked Eye" is missing on this cut and on "Maximum R & B" cut? "Odds & Sods" is the only cut that I have heard it played but no other recording, that I have heard, has it.

    D.... G....

I read somewhere that the song wasn't finished when this recording was made.

  14. P.... ....

It all looks fine.................to the naked eye...

  15. D.... G....

A fantastic song can't understand why this didn't become an instant hit and why wasn't this on the original Whos Next album.

  16. M.... L....

    The lyrics! oh my lord

  17. J.... R....

In my opinion one the best who songs that chord progression is one of the best of I have ever heard!

  18. I.... O....

    Its back on youtube!!

  19. c.... f....

9 dummies need to stay at home and play their dustin bieber collection...just saying

  20. I.... ....

    epic image

  21. C.... ....

nice to see they're playing this gem on tour again

  22. L.... ....

    That freaking solo tho

  23. E.... B....

    This is the Who,mach 7 to infinity.Unmatched.

  24. F.... B....

    From which album is this?

    F.... B....

Filip Bačík It wasn’t on an album but got released on Odds and Sods and later on a Who’s Next deluxe edition.

  25. R.... ....

My $.02. It's a very powerful track that, yes, would have been a standout on Who's Next and was deservedly a live staple for many years. Had Townshend at 2:40 or so been able to come up with a better solo, it would have been potentially among the greatest live rock songs ever. Instead, he and the band drift a bit before rallying for a strong (if familiar) ending.

  26. G.... G....

Do you hear the locomotive??? This is the boys in their prime. The definitive Who song.

  27. E.... B....

This song says is incredible .Hugely underrated masterpiece from the Who.They could rock, play, write, compose and sing like nobody's business.God Bless 'em.

  28. J.... ....

0:00: Pssst...hey, Pete, we're playing Naked Eye, not Acid Queen!

    J.... ....

    Omg! So accurate!

  29. J.... B....

    in the States.

  30. J.... B....

I hear a little Hendrix in Pete's guitar playing there, after all all these English dudes would all go watch Jimi play, n wasn't even heard of or Popular then.

  31. C.... D....

Odds And Sods CD....Sounds much better. Love playing these tunes on my Premier Drums. Pete is amazing song writer.

  32. t.... ....

I have this album and don't remember this song, Scot Halpin brought me here

    t.... ....

It's on the CD reissues, mate.

  33. m.... ....

To me this is the best version of this song! I can feel the raw energy from The Who in this! The studio version from Odds and Sods lacks in the energy. This version they take it to the stratosphere!

  34. G.... W....

Greatest guitar tone ever. Don't even try to argue this!!!

    G.... W....

    Same with the bass...... Beautiful......

    G.... W....

    And drums

    G.... W....

    And vocals.

    G.... W....

@Greg Winter, Pete Townshend knew how to put those p-90 pickups to use live!

  35. d.... ....

Hard to figure why this song didn't make the final cut for the original release of Who's Next. It is superior to most of the songs on that album. And the ending is epic.

    d.... ....

Yeah, this could replace mobile or my wife easy...

    d.... ....

A very "Live at Leeds" ending...

    d.... ....

dsfddsgh one of my favs ..but cmon......you act like whos next is bad instead of a masterpiece...which is what it is

    d.... ....

H.I. McDunnough definetly wouldn’t replace my wife

  36. n.... ....

The way they sort of stop playing around 3:40 0.... just hits home.

  37. n.... ....

    raw power

  38. T.... S....

But it don't really happen that way at all.....!!

  39. K.... ....

Can us Brits ever get so fucking GOOD again??

    K.... ....

no...but if it makes any difference no one else will either.

  40. N.... D....

    Miss those days.

    Well, let's see...
I've bought Ambrosia a round of drinks, been on-stage at the Grand Ole Opry, carried Al Stewart's guitar, Performed on stage twice with JMT from Mason Proffit, been insulted by Gary Wright and handed Roger Daltrey a bottle of water during a concert.

    - Yeah, I guess I've lived a full life

    N.... D....

What did you do - tell Gary Wright you didn't care for Dream Weaver or something?

    N.... D....

    I'm from Tennessee just saying
    Because you mentioned the Opry

  41. T.... ....

Pete Townshend you are an incredible guitarist sir

    T.... ....

That guitar playing does tend to raise all the goose pimples up all over the arms and up top the shoulders to the neck area... yep....

  42. T.... A....

I like the studio version best because it is so tender and touching as well as a flat-out rocker.

  43. T.... M....

    This is soooooooo good!

  44. M.... K....

    Great song.

    M.... K....

Agreed one of my favorite who songs

    M.... K....

    for real

    M.... K....

    Lisa Bergkoetter yes

  47. M.... ....

In Pete's book he talks about writing songs with Roger Daltrey's voice in mind, a major turning point being his efforts to sing songs for Tommy. Assumedly, he could then sing higher notes and softer vocal passages then in the earliest WHO incarnation ... I think it helped The Who in stretching out as they did while a band, and even later with Roger's solo work. Roger himself said he considered it a great honor to sing Pete's words. I think it took some years to have that perspective however

  48. l.... s....

like daltrey played the power guy and pete the senic guy very excellent !

  49. D.... R....

I believe the story behind the album's 2001-cover art happened when the band was riding in a car on the outskirts of Sheffield, UK after a gig and some in the group were discussing Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey(John and Keith, IIRC) and all of a suddenly, they saw a monolith similar to the ones seen in the film where the apes gather around and supposedly become smarter, they tell the driver to stop, get out and despite popular belief, urinated on the monolith instead of standing in awe in front of it. A NME photographer snapped most of the photos later seen on the album cover and later CD editions after the band had finished urinating on the fake monolith outside Sheffield. After the band finished recording the album, Townsend felt the photos depicted the eerie, harsh barren post-apocalyptic themes of alienation, disillusionment, and restlessness the album's original title, Lifehouse, meant to convey about a future dystopian society where people live in insulated, Matrix-life Life Suits maintained and controlled by comptrollers in a system called the Grid. Rock music is outlawed and the Lifehouse is an underground sanctuary where those who live outside Grid-range or those trying to escape can meet and listen to whatever music they like, without being monitored, or spied upon.Townsend described the Lifehouse rock opera as being like "Brave New World in rock terms" and his personal answer to revive the late 60's counterculture enthusaism he felt was waning due to confusion, lack of initiative, key causes like the Vietnam War that were coming to close, and deaths of Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, figures perceived by mainstream establishment as youth spokesmen, and the lingering effects of the disastrous free Altamont concert where Hells Angels bikers roughed up and killed an 19-year old black teenager after being harassed by several racist Angels for having a white girlfriend and finally fed up, pulled out a small nickel revolver and aimed it, allegedly in the direction of Mick Jagger onstage during the Stones set.

The Who had been playing bits of what became Naked Eye since at least the summer of 1969. Listen to the end of their Woodstock set and you'll hear what I mean.
