Who, The - Love Ain't For Keeping Lyrics

Layin' on my back
In the newly mown grass
Rain is coming down
But I know the clouds will pass
You bring me tea
Say "the babe's a-sleepin'"
Lay down beside me
Love ain't for keeping

Black ash from the foundry
Hangs like a hood
But the air is perfumed
By the burning firewood
The seeds are bursting
The spring is seeping
Lay down my darlin'
Love ain't for keeping
Lay down beside me
Love ain't for keeping

Lay down beside me
Love ain't for keeping
Lay down my darling
Love ain't for keeping

I think that with the exception of Tommy, who's next was their greatest release ! P.S. I asked timothy Leary. Dig

This song makes me want to cry its so perfect!

  7. J.... L....

The thing that makes this song not my favorite in the album is the fact that it’s to short

  8. R.... C....

Brilliant album peppered with quick gems like this.

  9. M.... S....

    Everything in 2min10secs. Perfect.

  10. d.... ....

I can’t be the only one who thinks this kinda sounds like A Song for Jeffrey (the beat)

  11. C.... B....

I have to admit. I have never really 'got' the who. One, all their songs sounded the same. And two, all the members always came across as pretentious, creepy, egotistical wankers. My partner, who is old enough to remember them from their heyday, said she did know anyone who liked the who, and anyone who did was weird. Girls did not like them. If you put them on at a party, it cleared the room. All their fans were male. Very few love songs. All a bit homosexual. 😍

  12. J.... R....

Regardless of the fact that this is technically a collection of tracks from a failed rock opera,it's their best album.

  33. M.... N....

Yeah 20 people will write a better song than this and we'll be all listening to it 40 years from now. Hahaha. Better get on it people.

  34. k.... ....

Probably the weakest song on Who's Next. However, since it's on the greatest rock album off all time, that doesn't mean it's still not a great song.

  35. m.... ....

One of many fantastic songs by The Who. Thanks for posting.

  36. E.... l....

Got to see The Who at the Hollywood Bowl before John Enwistle died awesome concert and the Hollywood Bowl is a great venue to see a concert. This concert is in my top 5 favorite concerts I’ve been to.

  39. U.... ....

The Who made one album. This was it. That is the compliment of the 20th Century.

  40. B.... L....

    Love it my favorite

  41. K.... G....

This is by far the best album ever made from 1st track to last !

    K.... G....

Kevin Gardiner. And just think it was considered - by Pete Townshend himself - as a salvage job, as well as a pale compromise of what he originally had in mind ("Lifehouse") that was too ambitious to put on record the way he envisioned it. (Many other great songs - like "Pure And Easy" and "Join Together" - wer e left off so that "Who's Next" could be only a single record. But what a record!!)

  42. c.... ....

    Void where prohibited.

  43. C.... B....

Another great song, from another excellent album!

  44. S.... R....

    Music.
    Fucking sucks now.

  45. D.... C....

    My favorite who song
I have seen The Who 7 times. They are part of my crazy youth in teens and part of my recovery at sober 2 years at 54. The who is in my very soul
Long live rock be it dead or a live

  46. E.... H....

Part of what makes a song great, is wanting more...
Too short means the artistry included a built in craving.
Kudos to the foundry of artisan-ship!

  47. K.... G....

This has to be the best 2 minute and 10 second song ever made !

  48. K.... G....

One of the best albums ever made, all songs were great ! They don't make albums anymore with more than two good songs !

  49. R.... C....

Listening to this album all the way through is absolutely baffling. How is every song perfect? There is absolutely no discernible low water mark on this album, just musical peak after musical peak.

    R.... C....

Between 1971 and 1973 this band was at a point in their career where everything they touched turned to gold. Their musical and lyrical creativity was at an all time high , one may even say peaked idk. They could not write a bad song even if they tried.

    R.... C....

I agree with Vincent. Daltry and Townshend ARE RockStar Gods! Midas was shining down on them all. Entwistle is Epic. Keith Moon was gone too soon.

  50. E.... C....

This song is so great in every sense... the strumming is just incredible (those who play guitar may agree). Yhe lyrics and the feelings it conveys are just beautiful. It does not matter it is a short song. When I read that the rolling stone magazine said that the song is forgettable I just thought that the magazine writers and editors are entirely fucked up. Longe live The Who!

    Thanks for posting!

  51. t.... ....

It's always bothered me that this picture only shows three pee stains. Is the fourth one hidden? Did someone not go?

    t.... ....

@Sega Tortoise You didn't ruin anything, I'm just an equal opportunity pee-er. Why is there only three stains? It makes my O.C.D. flair up something terrible. I hate odd numbers. If someone could cut and paste a fourth stain on that thing I'd greatly appreciate it.

    t.... ....

If you look, there ARE four stains, Townsend is partly covering the one on the right as he's moving away

    t.... ....

@65swansong I don't see it my friend but thanks for the tip. I guess life is ok if we can casually discuss piss stains.

    t.... ....

oh it's definitely there, look behind the loer half of Pete's leg, just to the right of it

    t.... ....

I do see it now. Swansong, if you had been on watch in the the tower of the Titanic I believe you would have changed the course of history with those eyes.

    M.... A....

    I love this tune

    M.... A....

Mary Anne Fontana so sweet hit me up on facebook!

  53. D.... D....

this might be the weakest song on who's next ,and is still a very good song!

    D.... D....

A ditty admittedly, but the imagery sells this song. Here is a content man, in love. Wouldn't YOU sing?

  54. A.... S....

Everyone hear is talking about Townshend which I understand but I think Roger sings this great. He really came into his own on Tommy but broadened his vocals even more on this album. Lead singers are so important!!!

    A.... S....

    Is kinda hard remebering everyone...

    A.... S....

Stratus 262J Also Ozzy Osbourne and Ian Gillian

    A.... S....

like my brother always said, you can get a bass player, a lead guitar player or a drummer, but a singer is hard to come by !

    A.... S....

    Paul Rodgers also.

    A.... S....

I'd say that calling Tyler: (American Jagger) speaks to how derivative he was and that he wasn't very different or distinctive. Never liked them and Tyler 'buying' a fourteen year never helped. Dirtbag.

  55. V.... T....

2 minutes of pure bliss. Townshend is rediculous and a genius and there was never gonna be anyone else on this entire planet that was going to sing his words, but the golden boy.

  56. l.... ....

    unreal, it's so great

  57. R.... L....

Newly mown grass brought me here.

  58. S.... 2....

A great song from the greatest studio LP of all time.  Still listen to it all the time.

  59. M.... S....

They didn't do much of any country music so this hits the spot.

  60. J.... J....

    excelente tema de The Whooooo

  61. s.... ....

This album marked the Who , at their pinnacle. EVERY song on this album, was a hit!

    s.... ....

And to think many tunes were left off the final album, such as Pure And Easy, and Naked Eye.

    s.... ....

Agreed! Every song on this album is great! Perhaps the best Rock Band of all time -- more specifically -- best ALBUM of all time! Led Zeppelin, the Stones and the Beatles, along with this band were often referred to as the big four out of England. But I think in the end it will be acknowledged that The Who stand at the top of the hill. And to think that Pete Townsend did much of his best work after losing his much of his hearing of late. Certainly, he alone did not comprise the band. He's but one of four. But, he was THE master mechanic of the whole thing. We all know that much. I've read that he's became quite deaf during these last several years. Yet what an impact it is on the music world when a man goes deaf and his music gets better! Listen to his 'White City" album(1985). I understand his hearing was a big issue even then. But listen to the fine detail within.

    s.... ....

Mr. Smith: Musical Genius, experience and proper music theory can overcome both hearing and visual deficits. Major and augmented chords are always pleasant. Judicious use of minor, diminished chords, cacophony and novel rythmic expression drive musical innovation. It doesn't take a "rocket scientist" but talented musicians and composers create Masterpieces!

    s.... ....

Actually they weren't that is the sad part of it all...Every song brilliant!

    s.... ....

Just like Spinal Tap’s Smell the Glove, 😂

  62. L.... F....

If you never made love to sheep, you will never get this song, sorry.....

    L.... F....

+Lola Flores Just something we'll all have to struggle though, in a both figurative and literal way.

  63. D.... G....

Lay down beside me, it aint for keeping dude

  64. M.... ....

    Wonderful-

    M.... ....

    +Gonzalo Rosas
So is Peter Gabriel dressed as a flower.

  65. S.... ....

The acoustics on this track is fucking down right clear crisp and on point.... Roger moonie ox and Pete go together. The end

  66. D.... G....

    I is back for more

  67. J.... D....

Never get tired of listening to The Who!

  68. T.... ....

hum .. that bass line <3

  69. C.... M....

The bass, the drums, the way the whole thing grooves. They were just effortlessly awesome.

  70. D.... E....

This was their best album ever

    D.... E....

+Derek Elmore Always Quadrophenia for me but this is a 10/10 truly great album.

    D.... E....

*+Journeyman Man* Quad was always my favorite, too. My favorites being Drowned, I'm One, and Doctor Jimmy.

    D.... E....

    +Derek Elmore my rankings:
    1. Live At Leeds (Deluxe, with Tommy)
    2. Quadrophenia
    3. Who's Next

    D.... E....

This is the best album of all time

  71. O.... F....

the who have always had such beautiful melodies. i love hard rock, but first, it's gotta have a beautiful melody! love the who forever! the stones too. it.s that BLUE NOTE1

  72. S.... Y....

I think I'd trade a bit of time off the other tracks on the rest of the album to have a bit more with this one....

  73. D.... M....

hard to pinpoint why this song is so way underrated by many non who fans

    D.... M....

    Because they don't know it.

  74. j.... e....

what a beautifully balanced song.  everything contributes from bass, drums, vocals, lyrics, and it has that sweet little acoustic solo too.  such a great tune

  75. s.... k....

don't know why, pretty much greatest song ever

  76. A.... K....

Have always LOVED this song---have played it over and over so many times.  Agree, that I wish it had been longer.  Classic.

  77. R.... ....

The only thing I can't stand about this song is that it's too short.

    R.... ....

Same with Kansas' "The Spider" from their album _Point of Know Return._

    R.... ....

I read a review of Who's Next that basically called this song filler....i don't read album reviews anymore lol

    R.... ....

And punks said that before punk came about songs were far too long.

    R.... ....

it is short, but i always think of it in conjunction with "my wife", so its like it doesn't end, it just picks up tempo and electricity.

  78. B.... h....

And to the 7 who gave this a thumbs down: Are you daft? Just in case, you're fired.

    B.... h....

Probably because they can't stand how short this song is.

    B.... h....

    Jimbo Jet true

  79. M.... ....

Their greatest song ever and not as well known... WHY?

    M.... ....

    @flushsucks
Hi :)  What happened, I think, is when I took, Ketamine,  it knocked out my analytical mind, in a way that meditation does, BUT FASTER, much faster.   With my rational mind out of the way,  it seemed as if I had access to how the universe works.  I felt as if the whole Cosmos is in perfect order, even the chaos we see, is actually part of the perfect order :)  Thanks for responding to me post

    M.... ....

+Joseph De Vito Nothing but drug-induced illusion.

    M.... ....

    flushsucks I totally agree

    M.... ....

flushsucks Among Who fans it's well known!

    M.... ....

Joseph de Vito: Meditation and Marijuana have lead me to a similar situation. I've almost gone "beyond" myself. I have received my gift although not necessarily my Nirvana. Seventh Heaven is utter Bliss. I have only had a glimpse of The Bright Light and it unnerved me. I was not ready yet but I am certainly more aware.

  80. m.... ....

Oh yes, love this for all time!

  81. R.... V....

My favorite song by the who! Too bad it's such a short song! I absolutely love this song! Great album too! Can't get enough!!!

    R.... V....

I agree, best Who song ever.  best acoustic guitar in a rock song ever

  82. R.... ....

I tabbed the acoustic flourishes on this song recently after 40 odd years of just being a fan of it and playing it more safely on electric guitar once in a while. This song epitomizes being young, masculine, potent, and out on the prowl for some vi-jay-jay

  83. B.... F....

Ive partied with them twice like animals till 12330AM am thanks dad

  84. M.... ....

For me, the hard acoustic album version really sounds the best, not quite as good live from what I'd heard

  85. V.... S....

    Lay down beside me
    Love ain't for keeping <3

  86. D.... G....

    Greatness.

  91. L.... D....

I must have listened to this great song & album a thousand times -- and I still love it.  One of the greatest LP's of all time here.

  92. K.... M....

Their is Not One Bad Song on this Album = True Genious They Did Some Work On This Album =Great Job Boys :)

    K.... M....

As much as I love Pete Townshend, the album could have lost "The Song Is Over."

    K.... M....

    @Chackers
That is no "throw-away". It's probably the most musically sophisticated song on the record. It was also a way to reference "Pure and Easy" which was part of the "Life House" vision Townsend was trying to fulfill at the time. I was 16 when Who's Next came out and I would use a pair of drum sticks and several pillows to smack along with Moon's aggressive drum fills. I love the rotary speaker sound on Townsend's electric guitar parts. I'd sacrifice Going Mobile if I had to, but thankfully no one had to.

    K.... M....

@RareBird0 Great Post.  I have a question. I have always wondered why bands have to sacrifice a song. Why not put  all the songs on the album?  :)

    K.... M....

    @Joseph De Vito
It all depends on the actual media limits of the time when the work is produced. In 1971, there were no CD's yet nor personal computers on which to play digital files. The vinyl LP was the standard of that time. Even tape casseetes or eight track tape cartridges were "emerging" technologies which not everyone had. Automobiles came with radios--I remember being a teen and while riding in my friend's dad's 1970 Olds Delta 88, he had to buy and install and FM converter so we could listen to FM radio because AM radios were standard still. But anyway, back to the vinyl LP--there was a limit to how much an artist could put on one record. Tommy and Quadrophenia by the Who both were double albums because, as pioneering "concept albums" there was way more material than could fit on one record. A release like "Who's Next" which didn't try to be a thematic work with overtures and interludes like the others, surely involved some sacrificing of songs that could not fit. Eventually they wound up on other records like Odds and Sods. The Who, for one, were not short on material whereas other groups, like say a Led Zeppelin, may have had just two or three songs and tried to "fill" the rest of an album with whatever they could. I'm not a believer but there are probably no better words than god bless Pete Townsend for being prolific in his song-writing while also keeping the standard as high as it gets. The Who meant everything to me and I had to step away from my desk job and weep privately in the hall when learning of the death of Keith Moon. I felt then it was "over"--and it turned out to be so (even though the Who and Townsend as a solo artist continued on).

    K.... M....

@RareBird0  Thank you:)  I hope Keith is in rock and roll heaven

  93. F.... ....

Looks like there's one who thinks love is for keeping...

This is why you have to listen to the album and not the radio.

  94. T.... ....

good to know you and Schroeder finally got together. Did he ever write that symphony? We haven't seen each other since Snoopy died.

  95. T.... ....

got anything original? I mean, instead of just piggybacking my comment?

  96. p.... ....

Love this song. Always one of my favorites. Such a great band.

  97. A.... F....

This song gets the least airplay. but it's a good one.
This album reminds me of Good Times

  98. T.... ....

I'm just a 2 year old nurse shark, but I love this music cuz my dad listens to it when he comes home drunk and bites my mom on the ass.

  99. P.... ....

I actually invested quite a bit of money in headphones...I feel if you really want to connect with the song and how the artist really intended it to be heard, you gotta spend some money...

  100. K.... W....

love this song love is all that
