Who, The - Long Live Rock Lyrics
Down at the Astoria the scene was changing
Bingo and rock were pushing out X-rating
We were the first band to vomit in the bar
And find the distance to the stage too far
Meanwhile it's getting late at ten o'clock
Long live rock.
Long live rock, I need it every night
Long live rock, come on and join the line
Long live rock, be it dead or alive
People walk in sideways pretending that they're leaving
We put on our makeup and work out all the lead-ins
Jack is in the alley selling tickets made in Hong Kong
Promoter's in the pay box wondering where the band's gone
Rock is dead, they say
Long live rock
Long live rock, I need it every night
Long live rock, come on and join the line
Long live rock, be it dead or alive
Landslide, rocks are falling
Falling down 'round our very heads
We tried but you were yawning
Look again, rock is dead, rock is dead, rock is dead
The place is really jumping to the Hiwatt amps
'Til a 20-inch cymbal fell and cut the lamps
In the blackout they dance right into the aisle
And as the doors fly open even the promoter smiles
Someone takes his pants off and the rafters knock
Rock is dead, they say
Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock
Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock
Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock
Long live rock, I need it every night
Long live rock, come on and join the line
Long live rock, be it dead or alive

Who, The Long Live Rock Comments
Is it possible to get an mp3 of this ? The vocal is different from the released version even though it’s a lip sync. I want an mp3 of this.
one of the great things about the who is that you have 3 guys acting like lunatics and then Entwhistle stands there expressionless like a statue
this is the "its only rock n roll (but I like it)"of the who
This is their "glam rock" song. It's got a bit of the retro 50's feel updated in the early 70's
of course the TV studio engineers mix out Pete's smoking Guitar riffs, and descending chords- entire beauty of song - ooof ooof
Music is good, but you can see this was a lipsynch number made for top of the Pops.
Keyboards in music, but no keyboardist, and Pete is not playing the lick we are hearing.
Still a great somg👍🏻👍🏻🎸🎸🎶🎶
pete is drunk ? look at 3:35 ?
The intro looks to be from a book program or sth. And then: THE WHO! 😁
If you don’t like The Who,you gotta be a moron..and stay the fuck away from me..
The terrible 'ooooooooooo
John Entwhistle went out with a bang...Coke and hookers in vegas..Now that's a fuckin rock star.
You gotta love Pete!! What a showman...forgets the words....grins....moves on. Awesome
Why are they displaying their attributes so blatantly? Why the outrageously tight pants?
Keith looks like he's gonna lose more teeth after laughing at Pete's fuck up. 🤣
Funny how 60's 70's musicians know they are playing " live" to a track. You can see inuendoes of smile and "this makes us money" smirks. Good stuuf
Pete was drunk. lol
The Ox and his Axe!
Hahahahaaa Keith laughing at Pete's hiccups xoxoxox
The only thing more disappointing than watching this and seeing that it is just a typical 70s pre-recorded track with live vocals is how few other commentor seem able to tell this.
Piano player was awesome
Sick sick sick
When you're a zoomer and all your "friends" tell you to stop listening to this crap.. *LONG LIVE ROCK!!!*
Still can't believe that I didn't like The Who when I was younger ><
Anyone know if this was pre taped or live? I trust this was taped. No amps in the background. Plus Keith does not have his can's on
Live mics (obviously), with taped music. This was not uncommon in the 60's and early 70's.
Pete Screwed Up The Vocals
The Who Top Ten Bands of All Time! Congratulations Rock N Roll!
THE WHO SIMPLE THE BEST BAND LIVE EVER AND EVER WILL BE.
John
I love John entwistle
The Who ALenda ....O Mito!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Long live Rock, The Who para sempre!!! Magnificos!
1:33 Great one, Keith!
I saw them on the 1973 , Quadrophenia tour ! Have been a Who fan since then ! Moon was a genius madman on the drums, and Roger gave me goose bumps..He was so damn good ! John Entwistle was a brilliant bassist, and Pete had some high jumps . These guys made my teenage years rock !! One of my top 5 great bands of all time ….
Maybe you can answer me this question: I consider Quadrophenia to be a great album. But in South Florida, at that time, Elton John's album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was played repeatedly---more than Quadrophenia. In fact, it was not until 1979 with the release of the movie Quadrophenia did I hear the entire album. Why was Elton's album more popular than the Who's Quadrophenia?
Michelle, I saw that tour in Boston. Remains in my mind one of the best shows ever. Third row center on the floor and I couldn't take my eyes off of Moon. Wild night. Might've been 13.
@David Rothman , I was 14 years old at this concert. Opened my eyes and ears in so many ways...lol I had never smoked before, but I counted 23 pipes, and joints that were passed to me that night, and I definitely experienced the show. Moon was BRILLIANT, I agree with you. During Baba O'Reilly he was a madman on those drums...One of the best nights of my life..
@vadouis Hello, I can't shed any light on why the album wasn't played more in Florida. What a shame, eh ? To listen to them playing songs from it, at the St. Louis arena, was phenomenal ! The surround sound, of the beach and ocean sounds, made you feel it , in a totally new way at that time.
@Michelle Boswell I agree. Which do you think was the better album, "Tommy" or "Quadrophenia?" To me, the 1979 movie "Quadrophenia" puts it over the top.
Now this is Maximum R&B!
Put this on my gravestone...strikes at my very core...long live rock, indeed! Thanks for the cool posting.
I’m glad they made this appearance so this song has them playing and has a visual to go with it! Keith Moon makes me laugh he’s laughing here and the Ox is a steady rhythm section!
We didn’t get to see this in the US. Damn it! We had no Satellite service or anything at the time. I missed all the Grey Whistle shows and Top of the Pops. Now I get to some of it 25 years later when most of these groups are gone now. Still I’m glad to finally see these shows! Thanks to Youtube!
Pete!!! Now there's a Rock Star!!! But damn....just over a half million views in over 8 years? Just sad. Maybe rock is dead :-(
outstanding
The music of today is shit all it is that’s being played with a computer bass and no real instruments and repeat the same shitty lyrics when The Who played this song it was good music in the lyrics of this song rock is dead that is what today’s music is like to the younger generation of 2019 I think the 90s was the last good decade of music and the music older than the 90s was also good
Theeeee band number 1 till I die. Long live rock 🎸🎼👊🏼
Where's Nicky Hopkins ? 😎
Totally Awesome!!!
Pete forgets the lyrics, but still a fabulous song. Love the Who!!
Pete forgot the words
This performance is full of so many small things that aren't supposed to happen but it still kicks all of the ass!!!!
Long live Moon - be it dead or alive
Roger Daltreys Hair is the fifth Member of the Band. :-)
What a fucking band!
This is great!!
This is why I am a Crazy Who Fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is a studio recording,no piano on stage
Rocks are dead. Dated.
Pete seems a little wasted!
That SG with the p 90s is sexy. Gibson has one similar coming out for 2019.
After all these years and recently listening to canned heat people come together Pete definitely used that song for inspiration for his song. ;)
Love everyone of these dudes , Townsend stage moves are the coolest. Always makes me smile. Fantastic as usual, can’t beat The Who!
Can someone tell me what kind of bass John is playing? It’s got a thunderbird headstock but it looks like a custom
Where was the off-stage music coming from? And please don't say "off-stage".
Several variations with programs like this, due to regulations imposed by the broadcaster, musicians' unions, etc.
(1) Band just mimes to the released version (too many examples to list, but in a Who context think of the "Relay" video, for example, or that "Magic Bus" recording from German TV used in "The Kids Are Alright").
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jW9d3bbsYU
(2) Released version's instrumental tracks are used and the band mimes playing their instruments, but the vocalists sing live [that's what you're seeing here, with some sloppy edits to shorten the song for play on TV--similar thing done with the (in)famous vids of the Beatles playing "Revolution" and "Hey Jude"].
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGLGzRXY5Bw
(3) Band comes in to record a special live version, but then when the song is aired the band mimes to that specially recorded live version though they might still *sing* live. [in a Who context, think of that Smothers Brothers "My Generation" vid from "The Kids Are Alright." The point is the producers want a "live" sound, but they also don't want the risk of someone making a mistake while playiing live.]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu42_-Dp4Tw
(4) Band actually plays live (on Top of the Pops, it was quite rare . . . but it did happen--look for the "5_15" video where Pete destroys the guitar Joe Walsh gave him because the producers cut out before The Who could finish playing the song . . . [EDIT] and watching it again I can hear and see that this was still a mix of studio version, prerecord, and live performance. But some bands did perform live.)

lip sync bs
I almost prefer Pete's voice in the Who
Moon really aged badly, I think he was only around 30 when he died but in this clip if I didn't know better I would think he was at least 40.
Long Live Roc n Ron✌🍄🍄🇺🇸😀😀
Great live vocals 👏
Not bad for an air guitar version of the song. Why they did live vocals and canned music is anybody's guess, Still fun though.
Before any of you knit wits claim this is LIVE. Don't.
But if you do, show me the keyboard player and how Pete is playing leads while his hands are not on the neck or are clearly, fingering a chord etc..
All the shows used to do that. I imagine it had to do with getting a good sound in a studio. But all those old TV shows used to do backing tracks and live vocals.
I've actually met people who despise The Who. To me, that's like despising chocolate, pizza, or puppies.
There's a word for people like that. That word is Communists.
Cat lovers?
what kina animal has something against a cheesy chocolate baby labrador?
@Andrew Ducrow I admire both of them, the King and The Who and many more others. I admire W.A. Mozart, too, or Antonio Vivaldi or J.S. Bach. Good music is for eternity, and The Who are a part of that!!!
@Shane Wright What is so bad about a communist? The idea behind it is still good and remains so. What some people made out of it was horrible, right. With Liberalism it was just the same: a good idea which perverted in our days to monster-captialism...And so on and so on. Should I finally mention Jesus Christ and what they made with him and his message?
I'm made the 1rst time i heard this song was on their 1981 'Face Dances' album, but it had only debut in the USA since 1979, but available in the Romantic Europe since '74, obviously due to "unwrapped his Knock (**realistically switch 'K' to 'C'....That what they MEANT to say),,but it was Edited by UK/USA album editors.
Definitely some overdubbing going on here. Pete’s Guitar solo’ing over the guitar chord stings. Great fun to watch. And where exactly is the piano player in the room?
It's not "overdubbing", they're miming to a prerecorded track. TV shows used to (and probably most still do) do that. The vocals are live.
the raw power of The who...still has no equal.
I respect The Who greatly but i still think The Beatles and Stones were better bands.
Nah, the Beatles were mostly a studio band, I mean they made great music but they didn't play it live.
The Stones were nowhere near as dynamic as the Who live. I love old Rolling Stones but live they were pretty shaky sometimes.
My favorite Rock Band is the Sex Pistols (who loved the Who) but as far as being a great live rock band I don't think any band ever could beat the Who in their prime.
They are simple the best live band ever there will never be another band as great as them LONG LIVE THE WHO BLESS YOU KEITH AND JOHN GREAT MUSICIANS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT.
TRUE to they're music 🎶
I love that white SG
Lame...
Keith appears to be missing a tooth lol.
There's a guitar up here if anyone wants to come up and fucking take it off me.
who was playing piano ,, anyone know ,, ?
They're miming to a recording.
One of my faves. Saw them live this same year-Thanksgiving weekend (Fri) LA Forum. Got off work at the Silver Slipper in Las Vegas at 2:40pm, rolled into a rainy LA and the Forum with the Who on stage playing 'The Real Me' , which as any knowledgeable Who fan will tell you begins with the sound of rain and thunder segue of "I Am The Sea", which we all got a kick out of as we had just come in from the rain outside. Magical experience.
2018... rock is dead, indeed.
Pete, he can write, but remembering is something else
Well to be fair he looked completely shit faced here.
Long live Rock but it ain't dead when done The Who way of doing it and usually with a glass of Brandy dear boy
Great stuff 🤘
The Who are the greatest band ever in rock !! all the other bands wanted to 'copy" the who ,...they wanted to BE THE WHO - AND COULDN'T !!
The one and only: Pete Townshend!
Long live The Rainbow (Astoria), now in memories only.
They appear to be playing to the backing tracks minus the lead vocals.
Like every other band on TV back then.
this is fabulous
This is the ONLY time I've ever seen Moon actually try to mime to a prerecorded track without totally hamming it up. Obviously the vocals are live, witness Pete screw up the words in the last verse. Love it!
Lead guitar part:
Pete is strumimg lol
Only the singing is live, the rest is a recording,
way to go pete! lol. how’d you miss your own lyrics?
Down at the Astoria the scene was changing

Live singing. Prerecorded music?
One of my favorite Who songs!
RIP Keith, John, and Rock & Roll!
Pete messed up the lyrics in the last verse, but they still were using a backing track for harmonies. Interesting!
future generations will consider THE WHO to be the most important band of the XX century
This the song which started the quadrophenia project
BEST ROCK BAND EVER!!!
Hate the way they used to dub the music on live studio performances in those days
great version, one of the best...long live The Who
Joh and Roger seem like reasonable chaps
E viva o Pai dos Punks
