Who, The - Cut My Hair Lyrics

Why should I care
If I have to cut my hair?
I've got to move with the fashions
Or be outcast.
I know I should fight
But my old man he's really alright,
And I'm still living at home
Even though it won't last.

Zoot suit, white jacket with side vents
Five inches long.
I'm out on the street again
And I'm leaping along.
I'm dressed right for a beach fight,
But I just can't explain
Why that uncertain feeling is still
Here in my brain.

The kids at school
Have parents that seem so cool.
And though I don't want to hurt them
Mine want me their way.
I clean my room and my shoes
But my mother found a box of blues,
And there doesn't seem much hope
They'll let me stay.

Zoot suit, [etc.]

Why do I have to be different to them?
Just to earn the respect of a dance hall friend,
We have the same old row, again and again.
Why do I have to move with a crowd
Of kids that hardly notice I'm around,
I have to work myself to death just to fit in.

I'm coming down
Got home on the very first train from town.
My dad just left for work
He wasn't talking.
It's all a game,
'Cos inside I'm just the same,
My fried egg makes me sick
First thing in the morning.

Who, The Cut My Hair Comments

A great album. Shame that track Four Faces wasn't included in the original album as its a lovely little track and has major relevance to the title QUADrophenia - 4 Faces.

  6. 7.... ....

When i was 14 in '78, my family moved us to a different state and i had no friends for almost a year. One day i remembered an old buddy had recommended this record. I begged my mother to buy it for me. Once i began the second listen, i was hooked. It perfectly mirrored my forlorn, melancholy state of mind. I would sit and listen to it all the time, leafing through the picture book as the story unfolded. I didn't know much about England, and particularly this cultural scene, so it was a real eye-opener. To this day i can't hear these songs without vivid memories of that romantically sad time of my life. A rock masterpiece.

Love this song... especially the first lines... Simply beautiful, as well as the full album. A true masterpiece. Thanks "The Who", I love you.

  24. M.... D....

  25. g.... ....

Pero ni una palabra de los presos políticos, malditos fascistas españoles. Ojalá los fusilen. Viva la democracia. Os mataremos, putos fachas. Visca Catalunya lliure!!!

  26. J.... R....

The band running on four cylinders. Pete Townshend truly is a Mozart genius.

  27. J.... Q....

QUADROPHENIA !!! THE GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME !!; ALL FORMS OF MUSIC BEYOND ROCK TOO !!!

  28. E.... W....

Quite simply the best album ever released on vinyl. I still have my original from the day of release.

  29. m.... v....

veter dan teenage uaseland. dis is a real masterpis!!!

  30. A.... J....

the outro to this track is pure class.

  31. L.... L....

Keith Moon's drumming on quadrophenia is amazing. and Pete Townsend is a fucking genius to have written this classic album

    L.... L....

    Yep and yep......

    L.... L....

Don't forget John "the Ox" Entwistle!

  32. L.... F....

Played what they said, so cool thumbs up.

  33. T.... P....

stay away from the Who eddie veder...what fucking tools I saw the pic

  34. z.... b....

I'm a huge pink Floyd fan and this is my first time listening to any the who album.brilliant lyrics and drums +the bass is just out of the world.kind of reminds of the wall in some ways (the singer sounds quite like Roger waters and the themes are a little similar )

  35. S.... A....

When I was a kid I would drop acid, lie on the floor with the headphones on ten, and levitate off the ground listening to this album over and over. The drums were like blasts of air underneath me keeping me alfoat, like an isolation tank. It was awesome. Especially this song. Keith Moon's playing is the soundtrack of how I tripped and rumbled through high school.

  36. s.... ....

WTF was that between Quadrophenia main theme and this???? Also I kinda don't like the pause between tracks, they're supposed to merge into each other. Kinda spoils the continuity. Still a good upload as I don't have the album at the moment....again. First time I bought it it was on vinyl, then cassette tape (remember those?) then CD....twice and now, having given away yet another accumulated collection as I went on the road....again, no albums at all, just smartphone and youtube, no ipod. For all it's faults, youtube is brilliant, nothing like it around when I was a kid. As Rush said in ,"Spirit of Radio", "bearing a gift beyond price that's almost free".

  37. m.... ....

    oh my god john entwistle

  38. w.... ....

Only Townshend could make "fried egg" work in a song.

  39. K.... R....

    I celebrate this band's whole catalog 1965-1973.

  40. G.... S....

there is nothing finer than Q. A magnum opus

    T.... S....

    Still love it

  49. S.... I....

Only Keith could think a drumming like this. Drums after Keith hasn't been the same

  50. E.... B....

    When your 14 in 1979.
The only who music you had was this one.
Sure your friends had Baba o'rielly, whos next, kids are alright movie.
    I had this.
I found myself listening to sides 1234 ,over and over.
I sensed something different was happening,
The last true Who art album as far as im concerned.
Classic doesnt even come close to this is.

    E.... B....

Same. And it meant a lot more to me than any crappy punk band that played two minute songs with no talent. This spoke more to me

  51. F.... L....

After Who’s Next, then this......I knew I was a fan of theirs for good reason!!!!

  52. A.... D....

Townshend has such a soulful voice.

    A.... D....

    He's catalan!!

  53. H.... C....

Living members of The Who - I hope you are still reading these comments. I have loved this song for my whole adult live. Thanks for many hours of listening pleasure. Pure brilliance!!!!

  54. S.... B....

this album always sounds so fresh
always great to come back to

  55. T.... P....

boggles th mind how anyone can thumb this down!!!!

  56. I.... W....

    Fucking A

  57. D.... C....

Quadrophenia was without any doubt their finest hour.

    D.... C....

    Its their best album

    D.... C....

    Definitely!

    D.... C....

I love this album but I'd put Who's Next a hair above it.

    D.... C....

@sal economos The 'Next' album 1st for me too is the best with 'quadrophenia' very close 2nd...

    D.... C....

    "Tommy"?

  58. G.... S....

I always preferred there originally Studio version. Daldry's voice can be heard find. He was a baby to complain about it.

  59. 8.... ....

    i love quadrophenia film

  60. A.... B....

Love that they had two voices. Daltry, the Face, the rugged voice putting it out to the world ... and Townsend, the frail introspective inner voice. Brilliant.

    A.... B....

Alex, that is a very cool observation!

    A.... B....

    Entitlement, the WHISKEY MAN

    A.... B....

I never thought of it that way, but it absolutely makes sense!

    A.... B....

Even in the chorus, there is a high powerful harmony and a low subdued one. What a great observation

    A.... B....

    Don't forget the Ox.
    Keith had his occasional moments.

  61. R.... C....

The lyrics, the drums and the base line are the best ever on this one! My fav "album" of all time. Thank you Pete and the boys...

    R.... C....

Randy Codd Everyone can relate to at least one song in the album.

    R.... C....

    The Real Me

  62. B.... ....

Awesome ( just like entire album)...RIP Keith & John

  63. 5.... ....

The Mods and Rockers united to become the Punks! Yay!

    5.... ....

    The Real History

    5.... ....

Not quite... Rockers (or bikers, as they were known by the 70s) still clashed with Punks and Skinheads

  64. J.... ....

It cannot be overstated how much I love this album and respect the talent and musicality that went into the production of it.

  65. D.... F....

When they remastered this album, they left out a couple of instructions that were supposed to have been off mic. For instance, before this song's second verse, on the old vinyl version, you could hear someone cueing Pete, by saying, "Your on!" I always liked that, because I figured it could also be the voice of a Mod or Rocker accepting the other's challenge to a scuffle.

    D.... F....

Just cleaned the grime off my '73 Track record Q, and thought I heard PT say, 'come on' at the referenced point.
First time I ever heard that - - so charming! Will listen for that again. BTW, the record quality is very, very, very good.

  66. u.... ....

Pete's lyrics can flat break your heart. "...I work myself to death! Just to fit in..." Speaking as someone who only remotely liked himself until his twenties, Pete's words gave me strength back in the day...when it was darkest.

    u.... ....

PT wrote "angry young man" lyrics better than anyone - anyone that I've ever heard, anyway.

  67. N.... A....

im new to the whole mod scene just watched Quadrophenia and i was interested in being one getting a scooter and a parka , problem is what music do they listen to, and what do they wear nowadays? lol cuz im listening to all the classic mod bands and mods are all about the newest fasion so im not really sure

    N.... A....

Julien Curnutt actually just checked that song out man it's great 👍🏻

  68. l.... m....

Eh, Guy ,vous speakez en English, moi je suis un bouffeur de grenouilles, mais quoiqu il en soit,ta culture avec plein de mes potes on te la manges,le mot qui tue no way

  69. P.... R....

Saw them perform this album in concert, IMO their most underrated work and probably has a better overall story and theme than Tomy as I don't think that ever felt totally complete.

This song is beautiful, Pete does so much introspective work and this has some truly timeless lyrics.

    P.... R....

This album is "too" good, after the listening of this masterpiece, this is hard to listen to their other albums ...

  70. a.... ....

In my opinion, the drums on this whole album are Keith's best ever.

    a.... ....

    without question!

    a.... ....

    no doubt

    a.... ....

I think Live at Leeds drumming is better but the drumming here without a doubt is INCREDIBLE

    a.... ....

with the exception of "tattoo" when his fills completely fall apart. Twice. He had a hard time with that one i guess. I laugh every time i hear that.

    a.... ....

Not agree, i think Sell's Out and Who's Next are her better

  71. D.... P....

The 20 people that voted thumbs down must be pod-people, or have no soul.

    D.... P....

    pod people! lmfao.

    D.... P....

Douglas Proce Their what we call Pop Zombie's, their told how to think and what to listen to

    D.... P....

Douglas Proce they must have been Rockers

    D.... P....

No excuse. A great song is a fucking great song. I don't care what "style" it's in. The problem is that there are people who only listen to ONE style of music. I've never understood how anyone can go through their entire life only appreciating one style of anything. We all have our "go to" but only appreciating one style? Seems to me to be a very shallow existence, and screams of ignorance. I can create a list of 500 tunes that are all fucking great, and are all over the place in terms of genre or style.

    D.... P....

Douglas Proce “We are the pods, we are the pods, we are, we are, we are the pods...”

  72. G.... ....

    awesome song

  73. D.... K....

Ah......the rebel without a cause. Wait!!!!  That was me!  This one means so much still!

  74. l.... ....

so much pain in this tune and 'Dirty Jobs'....heart wrenching to me.

    l.... ....

    To mee too

  75. S.... C....

"Why do I have to move with a crowd of kids that hardly notice I'm around; I work myself to death just to fit in"
    Absolutely timeless.

    S.... C....

Cause your hairs in knots? they know you are? bought this and physical graffetti @ the same time and you think you are confused?

    S.... C....

    Everyone knows how that feels

  76. Z.... T....

    Fuckin Pister Postman

  77. P.... B....

    love it

  78. D.... h....

Back then, the synthesizer was amazing. Now it seems primitive but I would not change a thing. This record is perfect.

    D.... h....

Back in the day, I majored in music - Composition and Synthesizer. LOL.

  79. A.... M....

    Trumps campaign Song

  80. D.... M....

music would be better if they wouldnt stop it every 5 seconds to ask about their pay service.

  81. M.... G....

One of greatest rock albums ever imo.

    M.... G....

    +Nic Flay agreed!

    M.... G....

All time greats for sure! Every song

    M.... G....

+Mark Griffiths yeah , man , for sure

    M.... G....

Absolutely one of the very best.  Thank you Pete.

    M.... G....

    No bitchn' shit?? like..............yeah!!

  82. 7.... ....

Every song from this amazing album takes me back to a time ,...this was the heaviest recorded music of it's time ,..and it does it without stupid distorted guitars ,..it is real sincere rock n roll that never fakes one moment ! The Who have a complex yet very simple way of making all other rock groups look down right silly and stupid ,...other music is crap ,... the Who went way ahead of their time here in 1973 ,..the use of the keyboards and the downright bitter lyrics , horns, technical drumming, ,..fuck ,..its all here on rock's greatest album !!

    7.... ....

@777RockNRollin The Who in general had a great instrumental balance, no one instrument overran the others. Entwhistle's bass work is so great, it's just there, but it so fills out the songs! Moon's drumming is never over the top, it's just up there with the guitar and singing. Really quite anti- 70's/ 80's popular rock style. Little wonder this music always sounds so good and still fresh, never annoying or embarrassing like how you can feel about other bands you liked at one time.
    Long live rock!

  83. b.... d....

    great song .

    b.... d....

    But Catalonia is better!!

  84. e.... r....

  92. S.... -....

    epitome of teenage angst. Genius.

    S.... -....

    billiant

    S.... -....

Thinks it’s a bit darker than that mate mental health seems to be a big theme on this album

    S.... -....

"Teenager" is a term invented very recently to further enhance control over us. Search for John Taylor Gatto's videos or research the origins of public schooling. From age 14 onwards, we are all adults, and you KNOW IT! Even if you don't want to admit agreeing with a "looney"

  93. J.... D....

*Wow, listening to I Am One earlier really opened up a can of worms.*
Despite the penchant for Hendrix, Metallica, 'Roses, Sabbath, Zepellin et al now, my formative years (8 - 17) were totally the opposite.

I discovered my Mom's Kinks, Spencer Davis, Manfred Mann and Rolling Stones ('63/64 - they were very definitely RnB) albums and my uncle's collection of American Soul when I was very young.

For my 8th birthday (Oct '78), I had a Parka, festooned with the obligatory The Jam, The Who and Small Faces pin buttons.

A year later, those badges would be joined by a huge sew-on RAF Target emblazoned with: *"Quadrophenia - A Way Of Life"* across it, which immediately went on the back of my "worn, torn coat".

The Parkas came and went as I got older (the coats, as did the band), but that badge always got transferred.

Listening to this song, the epitome of the film that was left off the soundtrack (great marketing, that!), Quadrophenia _was_ our life.  For almost a decade.

At school, we were different, aged before our time.  It did set us apart, enigmas, from/to our peers, no mistake.  Even the teachers didn't know how to handle us.

And although many of the other older mods didn't like it, my best buddy Paul and I were gigging when we were aged 13.  A bit of eyeliner, a cravat and a cigarette case (seriously) and we were in.  It was that simple.

If you should ever meet anyone from the St Thomas More RC Comp, Willenhall, Class of '87 (or '86 & '88, for that matter), just ask them if they remember @Jason Darrell- that's all I'll say.  Well, and this:

_"Why do I have to be different to them just to earn the respect of my dance hall friends? We have the same old row again and again._
_"Why do I have to move with the crowd, with kids that hardly notice I'm around? I work myself to death just to fit in..._
_"...I'm coming down; got home on the very first train from town..._
_"...my dad just left for work; he wasn't talking._
_"It's all a game. Inside I'm just the same._
_"My fried egg makes me sick first thing in the morning."_

    J.... D....

One of the best albums. Best bands. Period. Great post, inspired me to dust down my copy of Quad.

    J.... D....

Trivia: During 1998-2001 I used play in a Who tribute in the UK called Who's Who - great fun to play John's awesome bass lines in front of a few 100 Who-natics 3 nights a week!

  94. R.... B....

This might be the most important song on Quadrophenia. That slight melancholy pause before those two....magnificent...double drum-beats....followed by the lyrics about being different from "them".....rapturous brilliance. The entire album and everything it was trying to say encapsulated in eight short measures.

exactly, I bought this 8 track at a rummage sale when I was 13 or 14. it played forever which was rare for an 8 track. still one of my favorites

  96. s.... ....

I'm trying to save him from having to look back and feel disgraced. But I suppose I can't help if he doesn't want it. Oh well..

  97. S.... T....

When I record drum tracks for my band I usually scream like an animal during intense fills, the other guys would always tell me to edit the screams out of the final mixes. One day I showed them this and all the drumming screams it has and now they tell me to do it more often hahaha
