Wells, Mary - Never, Never Leave Me Lyrics

I love you more than anyone
Should ever be allowed
To love anyone or anything
(Anyone or anything)

And I need you more than anyone
Should ever be allowed
To need anyone or anything
(Anyone or anything)

So darling, please don't ever break my heart
I beg you, please don't ever make us part
'Cause without you I'd be a little lost sheep
And I'd die

Never, never leave me
Never, never leave me
Never, never leave me
Never, never leave me

I would cry more than anyone
Should ever be allowed
To cry over anyone or anything
(Anyone or anything)

So please love me more than anyone
Should ever be allowed
To love anyone or anything
(Anyone or anything)

Oh darling, on my knees I'm begging you
I'm pleading, please love me as I love you
'Cause without you I'd be a little lost sheep
And I'd die

Never, never leave me
Never, never leave me
Never, never leave me
Never, never leave me
Don't ever make me weep

Oh darling, on my knees I'm begging you
I'm pleading, please love me as I love you
'Cause without you I'd be a little lost sheep
And I'd die

Never, never leave me
Never, never leave me
Never, never leave me...

    Morown’s Best female singer.. 💛

  4. S.... S....

    The best artist, period!

  5. j.... c....

MGM/ABC/2Oth Century wasn't in the record business to truly complete.

  6. C.... T....

My parents, aunts & uncles always had her records and went to her shows. I was a toddler but I remember this music. This arrangement sounds like something Dionne Warwick would record. However, Diana Ross took Motown to another level.

  7. d.... ....

I forgot all about this song and never knew it was Mary Wells

  8. W.... C....

Heartfelt song. Mary was underrated and unappreciated.

  9. a.... ....

Mary Wells, upon whose back Motown was built. Diana would not exist if it was not for her. A real gutsy singer (Bye Bye Baby, check it out) but smooth out by... for public consumption, but the REAL stuff! OMG the harmonics.

    a.... ....

alphotheone Mary Wells was big time and everybody of a certain age knows this. You are some Johnny come lately who simply has a hate for Diana Ross. Not real appreciation for the greatness of Mary Wells greatness. Mary was Diana's role model. She was worshiped by the girls. Ya'll do a huge disservice to black musical history all of which these women were a part of black music & black cultural history. Motown produced tons of great music and artists. Diana left Motown and became even bigger. Black people always cutting each other down its so ugly & backward. All of these people worked under segregation & Jim Crow they paved the way for today's black superstars. Diana, Micheal & Stevie became the biggest without Motown. All y'all do is hate on them.

  10. V.... R....

Mary Wells was a legend I love her voice

  11. R.... ....

Love this song DAMN!! MARY SING IT 😁

  12. a.... b....

I need a good Text to go the through or maybe a SMS one e

  13. a.... b....

Drugs spice up her life...stop blaming drugs...

  14. S.... A....

This is such a stone-cold classic. I feel like "Dear Lover" by Teena Marie may have been intentional homage to this tune by Mary Wells!

  15. T.... H....

Let's stop pretending and just admit it: Mary Wells was Motown's best; this song certainly proves it. Some other Motown acts may have had more glamour, but when it comes to raw talent and taking possession of a song, Ms. Wells is poised on the pinnacle.

    T.... H....

Timothy Hughes - mary wells wasn’t with motown when she did this song. It was after she left motown

    T.... H....

@Ronald Nock plus smokey wrote a lot of her music

    T.... H....

Steven Padilla - yes, all when she was with motown. Back n da day, her nick name was mama do right, cause smokey kept her on top, till she left

    T.... H....

    @Ronald Nock nice to know.

  16. G.... B....

    shes mesmerizing

  17. S.... P....

    she was superb

  18. S.... P....

    imiss her

  19. C.... S....

I absolutely ADORE Mary Wells. She was the TRUE first lady of Motown. I just wish she received the full and proper recognition she deserves. I know drugs did hinder that unfortunately.

    C.... S....

I didn't know she had a drug problem. I know that towards the end she was wheelchair-bound and had to Sue Motown for residuals, just before she died.

    C.... S....

You said it. Great voice, The only female singer from Motown that is as good is Martha.

    C.... S....

Chaka Smith . Barry exploited all Of His Groups and they never received royalty from their hits. Drugs was allowed to cloud the mind from being conscious of Business.

  20. V.... G....

    I love this song💖💖

  21. P.... A....

Mary Wells may not have climbed to the "heights" her talent projected in her music, but she was well respected and her Soul was injected in all her materials and performances. Personally I believe it was by design that she never became a Super Star. Well done Ms. Wells.  Your Melodies touched my Heart and Soul.                                  ~BIRD~

    P.... A....

You know nothing about Motown music history. Mary Wells was BIG really, big.

  22. c.... p....

I had never never heard this song in 1965 , but just did in her documentary ! To think it only made No. 15 on the R&B charts ! Could it be because it was more like Dionne Warwick maybe ? I agree with Kenneth this should have been No.1 GREAT SONG  !!

    c.... p....

It was a wonderful album too. It has recently been re-released on cd. Check out Amazon.

    c.... p....

It was said that after her departure from Motown Berry Gordy blackballed her from being played on R&B radio

  23. k.... d....

Such beautiful heartfelt lyrics deserve to be sung by Ms Wells.....Love this kut....

  24. P.... ....

    WOOOOOOO TOP TOP 1=).

  25. M.... M....

Prior to the renaming of 20th Century-Fox Records, it was originally called 20th Fox as a record label division of 20th Century-Fox in the late 50's.

  26. M.... M....

Never heard this one before, but this was one of her lesser known songs after she left Motown. She had two LP's on the 20th Century-Fox label and that was it. She went to a few labels until she went to Jubilee in 1968.

    M.... M....

Really? i thought she only did the one album on 20th Century. I have it....I am going to have to look up the others.

    M.... M....

Mary's 2nd 20th Century Fox release is a Beatles covers LP. It's only ok.

    M.... M....

She did a pretty cool album for Atco, too. Her song from that album, Dear Lover was like her biggest post-Motown hit.

    M.... M....

She did 2 albums for the label, and that was it.

  27. c.... ....

    ANGELIC 2 CLEAN !!!

  28. d.... ....

@blkshepherd um, with regard to my not telling you how to spell or to learn the proper use of capitalization, confidentially dear, I JUST DID! no need of getting mad because i called you out on your inability to follow simple grammatical rules that you should have learned in GRAMMAR school. i would say that this could be an interesting discourse but i refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

  29. d.... ....

@blkshepherd the only one about to die is you from the vapours dear heart; i have no problem with people attaining stardom without stabbing people the back who regard them as friends; REAL friends don't fuck over friends just because they want to be in the spotlight. maybe they do in your world, but amongst those with character and morals it doesn't wash. i've never had a problem w/ms. ross as an entertainer, i have a problem with her as a PERSON and therein lies the difference!

    d.... ....

darchylde612 spare us your drivel. You can't lecture anybody about moral living, moral choices or ethics. Its not your place to approve or disapprove about anybody's life choices hypcrite. You deserve folks coming for you. Black community is running over with bad choices. Your post is meaningless cause we don't have any feedback from people in your life who you've screwed over. Many ordinary women trade sex for success in school & on the job. So spare me. All you have is hate & jealousy. You can't lecture on morality so spare us you fake. This is why you believe you believe people you don't know do this. You hide behind the screen but if a background check were run on you all of your dirt, would break the internet. You couldn't live a public life ratchet hos always talking crap. "Judge not lest you be judged." You are now open to public judgment.

  30. d.... ....

@darchylde612 i really don't have a problem with, i take humbrage with people such as yourself who want to blind themselves to the truth simply because you're such a groupie and you feel that your idol can do no wrong. ms. ross has feet of clay like you and me, she's human just like you and me so the sooner you take your head out of her butt and realize it the better.

  31. d.... ....

@blkshepherd first up, i have no quarrel with ms. ross as an entertainer; if you're going to come at me with guns blazing then stick to the topic at hand. as an entertainer i admire her and i like her singing as i own quite a few of diana's recordings, i'm remarking on her as a PERSON and some of the questionable choices she made to become a star. YOU on the other hand need to take your head out of her behind because it's obvious to even stevie wonder that you're a syccophant of hers, of which

  32. d.... ....

@blkshepherd as far as moving on with life, sweetie you need GET one first then you can move on with it! as i said before you can't be civil so you want to resort to insults, that's the sign of an immature mind at work; grow the hell up!

  33. d.... ....

@blkshepherd sweetheart, and i use that term VERY loosely, i already know the story about diana, berry and him being rhonda's father so you can move right along with that! people like you can't be civil in your disagreements and be respectful so you have to resort to name calling because you can't admit when you've made a mistake. learn some grace and humbleness hon, it just might suit you.

  34. S.... S....

You folks are just about to DIE because Diana became the star she dreamed to be. With help of course, luck, right place, right time. It also holds true that if you dont have real Talent, no one is going to Pay their hard earned cash to go see you strut around stage sounding bad and looking bad. Ok Berry slept and help Diana. Helped Introduce her to the world. But where she is today is because of Diana. not anyone else. and thats because the Woman Can Entertain. Saw her two Nights ago. Amazing.

  35. S.... S....

@darchylde612 I am Not going to go back and forth with you about what Berry did and what he didnt do. As for sleeping with Diana that came Long after Mary was Gone. Mary Left in early 64. Berry and Diana didnt begin dating until 1965 the Supremes greatest year. Thats neither here nor there and quite frankly I dont give a damn. Its in the Past, something you nor I can CHANGE. GET OVER IT! Diana, Mary, Berry have all gotton over it and Moved On with their Lives, You need to get on with yours .

  36. S.... S....

@darchylde612 When My Guy hit No.1 even the Beatles named Mary their Favorite Female singer and asked her out on the road..Other Larger Companies offered Mary much more than Berry could afford. Since Mary's contract was void because she was underage, she opted to go with 20th cent. who also offered Movie Deals. so even if Motown did try to discourage air play, her Movies would have still made her a star. But they didnt have Smokey or HDH. the KEY to Mary Wells Talent like the Supremes HDH.

  37. S.... S....

@darchylde612 dont get mad at me because one of your dumb assed cousins made that claim about eddie fathering diana's first child something of which I never heard of(no doubt you MADE UP). any person who knows the story of the Supremes know Berry is Rhonda's father. I knew it when I first saw the first pictures. I also am Well Aware Mary was under age when she signed at Motown, I am also well Aware her contract was void because of her age. I also read that Mary was in hot demand.

    S.... S....

These black hoochies got kids by so many fathers they can't keep up or support them. The kids grow up never knowing who their fathers are. These stupid lose women don't know how terrible they sound trying to pass judgment. I don't care about the personal mistakes of rich entertainers. They entertain me and don't take my tax money unlike the rest of you. Black women sleeping on the job and stabbing each other in the back. Diana Ross, Beyonce and all the other rich black entertainers are better than you. Because they handle their business. If their feet are made of clay yours are made of garbage that leaves a trail. You are not in a position to pass judgement on them or even the homeless person on the street. We don't care about your hypocrisy. I know you can't pass a background check or personal investigation.

  38. S.... S....

@darchylde612 Ok First, you must have Fell and BUMPED YOUR HEAD. You DONT tell Me how spell or learn the proper use of capitilization. You understood Exactly what I was talking ABOUT whether I wrote it in crayon on Toliet paper do I make Myself CLEAR? or do I have to break it down in Elementary to you Step off, your nothing but a bug to me. Go back to the crack of the wall you came out of. Now was that Spelled correctly to your liking? I could care less what you think about my spelling or you.

  39. d.... ....

@blkshepherd of course berry was proud of mary because "my guy" became a huge hit, hell she was making money for him and motown so who in their right mind WOULDN'T have been happy because their prized thoroughbred (using the horse analogy) just won the preakness? you gotta come better than that!

  40. d.... ....

@blkshepherd and one more caveat, reading over your comment about diana working with and listening to berry instead of against him, well if you're screwing the boss then it would be pretty stupid to work against him now wouldn't it? once the supremes hit it big my friend, a LOT of motown groups suffered for it because berry's main focus became diana ross, everyone else (including the supremes) were a distant second and third place for berry gordy.

  41. d.... ....

@blkshepherd had gordy opted to use the monies earned solely by motown after mary received her due share then there would be no need for this discourse but he didn't, it has been documented that he didn't and that once again lies the real reason why mary wells chose to leave motown at the height of her popularity. so next time you come out with guns blazing, make sure you have your facts straight.

  42. d.... ....

@blkshepherd did you also know that the contract mary wells signed with motown was invalid because she was 17 at the time and still technically a minor? i bet you didn't and berry gordy, out of embarrassment because of this, attempted to discourage other record labels from signing mary. again i maintain that berry and mary fell out over her getting a desrvedly larger share of royalties, to which it was discovered he was using those monies to push the supremes.

  43. d.... ....

@blkshepherd so in the end my "friend" it is YOU who needs to do their research. you remind me of another person on here who had the audacity to claim that eddie kendricks fathered diana ross' oldest child rhonda and claims she (diana) admitted that on oprah winfrey's show when it is common knowledge that berry gordy is rhonda's father; gordy himself admitted it years ago as well as did diana in her memoir "secrets of a sparrow"

  44. d.... ....

@blkshepherd so before you go off half-cocked and try to be a smart ass with your comments about someone whining, first thing you need to do is learn to spell and learn the proper use of capitilization where it's appropriate. and as far as giving berry gordy credit, true he did give the world wonderful groups and artists that we still enjoy listening to their works today but berry gordy was no choir boy and this has been well documented by many astute authors and music historians

  45. d.... ....

@blkshepherd i beg your pardon sir or madam but i'm not whining and i HAVE done my research...true mary made some bad choices at the behest of her husband but i still maintain that berry gordy and mary wells got into a huge dispute over her royalties and how she should have been continued to be showcased at motown and THAT my naieve "friend" is the main bone of contention that existed between mary and berry and was also one of the main reasons she left motown.

  46. S.... S....

@darchylde612 Further More. Berry had the same aspirations and dreams for Mary Wells which he ended up putting on Diana Ross who Listened and Work with him instead of against him. If it wasent for Berry Gordy no one would have heard of Mary Wells, the Supremes, the tempts, the marvelettes, stevie wonder, jackson five, marvin gay, nor the Mircales. It was Berry Gordy that introduced these Unknown folks to the World. so give Berry some credit and Quite Whinning about how he ripped thme off.

  47. S.... S....

@darchylde612 You are really very mis informed and really should do your research. If you had Done your research you would Know that Mary through bad advice(husband) Left Motown at the HEIGHT of her career. Berry was very proud of Mary when she hit with My Guy it was cross over hit(hit goal for motown) The Beatles asked her to open for them. Mary was on to great things but chose to LEAVE for More Money and movies at 20th Cent.Fox. They are the ones who killed her career not Motown or Berry.

  48. d.... ....

berry gordy has to answer to the Lord for why he was instrumental in destroying mary wells' career all because she had the audacity to leave motown because he was robbing her and his other artists of their royalties. this song is proof positive that mary wells should have been a bigger artist, remembered for a more impressive body of work, "my guy" and her other motown masterworks notwithstanding.

  49. M.... ....

Love her voice! This should've been a hit, but Motown wouldn't let her market herself as she could've. I know this is with 20th Fox Century...

  50. K.... T....

wow this song is so melodic and her lyrics just make me melt. Mary Wells was a very special woman. She was feeling this and the song should have been #1 on the r&b and pop charts.

  51. e.... ....

it saddens me that this wasnt a hit for Mary, for it is a beautiful song!! Im told that Dionne Warwick was in mind to record this initially.

    e.... ....

enriquetheprofessor yes in Mary Wells bio it was said Warwick didn’t respond to the offer and yet DJs thru the area refuse to give much air due to it sound more like a Warwick (walk on by) song than it did Wells. Too bad cause it’s a great song.

  52. e.... ....

@deep71483 ....same here, deep!!!! I love this song, and I really enjoyed her UNSUNG special, although it was very sad.

  53. P.... K....

Please Love Me as I Love You!! <3

  54. M.... ....

She had such a pretty voice. I would have never known this song had I not watched her biography on tvone.

  55. M.... P....

Herb Kent used to play this on Sundays in Chicago, I never knew this was Mary Wells. Great song by the legendary Mary Wells!!!

  56. e.... ....

This is just proof-positive that the greed of a record label can have grave and dire consequences. Motown had a star right in the palm of its greedy hands, and would rather let her go than pay her what was rightfully her due. It's criminal and shameful that Mary Wells had to leave and go elsewhere to try and rebuild her musical career. It's obvious this woman was cheated out of her royalties, and then blacklisted when she left to keep her from making money or gaining anymore notariety.

    e.... ....

White artists get ripped off all the time. That was the nature of the industry. Black artists had their music and royalties stolen routinely by white companies. Motown gave black artists better deals, stardom, promotion and exposure than they could've ever gotten at white record labels. These were opportunities. Barry Gordy started as a working man with a dream and a drive to make it happen. Gordy wasn't born rich. First black man in the game competing and winning against whites in racist times. Motown was also the soundtrack of Back Civil Rights movement in the USA. Don't care about useless haters who only complain, tear down and attack other black people.

  57. A.... G....

    @TheDonkeyhead135 pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  58. b.... ....

My 45rpm of this soulful Masterwork by Mary Wells looks just as worn as one illustrated...awesome classic "Never, Never Leave Me" should have been a huge #1hit but radio would not play her great things after Motown...wonder why? Thankful for youtube now posting classic tracks for this "Unsung" legend...Bravo Mary & RIP

    b.... ....

20th Century Fox didn't promote Mary they were busy promoting white artists. Century Fox owned movies studios it would've been easy to promote the songs inside movie soundtracks. But the executives there couldn't be bothered. So this is the answer to all the idiot who go on trashing Berry Gordy. Without Motown & Gordy most of those artists would've never been known and Mary Wells at 20th Century Fox records is proof of that fact. Only blind, idiots bite the hands that build and feed.

  59. S.... ....

    top tune thank you

  60. I.... N....

Yeah Berry Gordy should have never let Mary Wells walk.

    I.... N....

"Berry Gordy should have never let Mary Wells walk." Well, artists have rights and minds of their own. Wells wanted to walk and nobody could stop her.

  61. T.... ....

Mary Wells was so "unsung"! she was beautiful, talented and had a uniquw sound! Lovely song!

  62. l.... ....

Thanks for posting this song. I have it on a 45rpm but it kind of scratchy.
This was Mary's last song after leaving Motown.

  63. o.... ....

Terrific to hear this again - the B side "Why Don't You Let Yourself Go" is excellent, too. Can you post it Soul hawk ?

  64. B.... W....

Fabulous! Her voice never sounded better - what a loss to music!

  65. C.... W....

My favorite from the great Mary Wells. Thanks for posting.

  66. T.... ....

wonderful ....Mary was on fire for this ...superb :)) ktf

  67. M.... D....

This song is one of Mary's best. She was so versatile with her voice and music. She made a great impression with the music industry and crossed many racial barriers. She is dearly missed. This is a 1965 minor hit from Fox records.

  68. t.... ....

great double header SO SWEET SO SOULFUL
