After all these years past.. Never thought when they came out they were going to become... LEGENDARY! Out of all the groups during that era. This has become my fav after 25 years. during the 90s, some days I preferred Nirvana, Offspring, Green Day... But I love how Weezer remained timeless. Makes me feel young

This song isn't ironic, nor has Rivers ever really written ironic lyrics. That's just people reading the attitude of the era back into Weezer. BUT just because it's sincere doesn't mean it's meant to be taken at face value. Notice how, though the boyfriend wants to be more possessive of his girlfriend, he's too passive even to break up with her himself ("if you see her, tell her it's over"). So the song is sung from the perspective of an introverted boyfriend who wishes his girlfriend would be less extroverted. And I think it's implied that this song is less a break-up letter and more a silent fantasy of the boyfriend's, since he knows he doesn't have the guts to drop this girl or the prospects to get a better one. Remember El Scorcho: "I can't talk about it; I gotta sing about it and make a record of my heart."

@risha a I think it's satire as well, for me the song it's about a sexist loser who wants a girlfriend he's able to control because of his own insecurities. It could also be about a girl who cheated on his boyfriend, so now he's so paranoid that he wants a submissive girl who won't cheat on him.

This song never caught me as *extremely* sexist from Weezer honestly,
it's a bit extreme in meaning and can be taken into several
perspectives. I see that the girl that "laughs for no one else" is one
that doesn't have many relationships with other men, or what society
would call a 'slut'; not actually LITERALLY laughing at other men's
jokes in front of her boyfriend.
The "when I'm away she puts her make-up on the shelf" for me references
not openly expressing sexual actions or desires to other men when her
boyfriend is away (hence they make her attractable, like physical
make-up for many).
Lastly the "when I'm away she never leaves the house", okay this one
really sounds sexist for many due to the women-belong-in-the-house
message that some may physically take as; but what if the house was not
REALLY a 'house'?
What if the *house* represents the boyfriend and girlfriend's
*relationship* for each other, so in other words he doesn't want a girl
that *cheats* on him (goes outside) while they are in a 'house' or in a
relationship.
Of course all of this may be Rivers' insecurity showing but for many it
can also express what some women can do in terms of not respecting a
human relationship for a guy (of course there are also guys that do this
too but women are applied to this situation). The final addition in
terms of evidence is that the follow-up to this song is: "The World Has
Turned And Left Me Here", so after breaking up with the girl that
cheated the *guy* in this song; he now feels depressed but still knows
he's right.

In other words: it's a break-up guy song, and whining about how you feel
'oppressed' by it due to your own perspective in taking it *too*
literally doesn't help you or us. After all it's extremely catchy and
one of the reasons Weezer's Blue Album is amazing.
