Ween - The Argus Lyrics

Yesterday we lost our lives, tomorrow we were born
Fortune smiled upon us, sacrifice the Argus
All that he might help us see

Magna eyes the track for miles, looking for disease
Puzzled by the mountains - tricked by the sea
and the Argus is practiced compassion
with an eye on you, as one is on me
will the god eye grant his forgiveness
and allow he that's lived, a reason to see

Counting days and building walls, bells ring so's to warn
All the signs that guide us, chosen by the Argus
Tell me has chosen you

Led by form we'll shed our soul
Trusting like a child
See the dark face that saved us
Drink from his empty eyes

and the Argus is practiced compassion
with an eye on you, as one is on me
will the god eye grant his forgiveness
letting droplets of light erupt from the sea...

Lying in beds of garlic and orchids, he closes an eye, which closes another
and in sleep he dreams, of watching and looking and feather clouds dancing
He curls up his lid and sleeps...

Swirling with visions on man's confusion
All of the work, done just to appease him
The Argus he cries, though love has it's place in the sun
It's only man's fear that carries him on...

This was the song that made me fall in love with Ween.

  2. l.... ....

I had heard “Hey There, Fancypants” at bars in the past and figured Ween was a novelty band.
I listened to that track one day and let it ride, and this song came on afterwards.
Hearing this song made me love Ween.

Have been a Ween fan since Pure Guava came out. This album was released when I lived abroad, so I didn't hear it until 2012. It's so good, and was a great present when I came home.

  20. M.... A....

Even more poignant knowing what Gener was going through when they recorded this album. This got me through my divorce as well.

There's a version of this song from 2003 at The Orpheum Theatre and it's so sick. The same year that the song came out.

    🖤🖤🖤

  39. K.... ....

reminds me of the more subdued king crimson songs

  40. B.... P....

I had Chocolate and Cheese on cassette as a 13 yr old and loved how it was different than any other music I had, but didn't look into them more til I was in my 20s and made friends with a guy from work with excellent music taste who let me know how much other great shit I was missing! Saw them live twice when they toured around the time Quebec came out in 2003.

Just wanna say I absolutely love that this was over 15 yrs ago, and I'm seeing comments all over the place a few months or a few days old even, from people who are just discovering these songs. Makes my heart happy. All you new to the ween, you were drawn in because you clearly have excellent music taste too ♥

  41. d.... s....

Whoever doesnt like this song is a complete piece of garbage

  42. x.... ....

people what does ARGUS mean? :)

  43. C.... ....

“counting days, and building walls” fits into the government shutdown pretty well haha

    C.... ....

ugh, no politics, what a buzzkill you are

  45. u.... ....

This is the song I played on repeat as I took my beloved but troubled dog to a no kill shelter in the mountains. It was his favorite, and he knew I did my best. Cop pulled me over for speeding, saw my eyes were red, and my dear Opus in the back. He knew where I was headed. Tapped my trunk and set me on my way without penalty. It was a bittersweet day, and while the lyrics of this song have nothing to do with what was happening, it is forever embedded in me as the day I had to make the hardest decision of my life.

He's alive and well, has a solid pack, and he can finally be the alpha he wanted to be. He is kind of the Argus in many ways. A cosmic horror in his own right, but a damn fine dog that will live out his days in the best happiness I could never provide.

    u.... ....

my god man! solid story brah

    u.... ....

Holy fuck. This is brown as fuck. Brown. As. Fuck. It's brown.

    u.... ....

    Thank u for sharing this.

  48. P.... ....

  49. I.... M....

Ween cover band from PA here, check us out and give us a sub if you'd like, thanks. Hail boognish!

  50. A.... C....

Quebec is the pinnacle of ween's creative output

  51. g.... ....

I know associating Ween with Spongebob is a big meme but this song really makes me think of Stephen Hillenburg considering how much he was inspired by the band's music. R.I.P.

  52. B.... ....

When I need to recharge from all the painstaking nonsense in life, I can always count on Ween to lift me right back up.

  53. W.... N....

Best Led Zeppelin song, hands down.

  54. C.... T....

    best ween on blue planet

  55. M.... M....

The 42 people that disliked this video did not listen with an open ear, or mind rather.

  56. c.... ....

this song reminds me of that one time in band camp

  57. M.... C....

    3:40 OMG

  58. l.... ....

I used to think this band was a fucking comedy act until I heard this song.
I didn't even click it, it played right after "Piss Up a Rope"
    I've loved them ever since.

  59. L.... ....

I first met Ween when I was playing Tony Hawk's near age 9, and I just knew one song, called "Its Gonna be a Long Night". It is one of my favorite tracks of the game until actual day. But just recently I've started listening to the other tracks of this amazing band and I must assume I'm in deep love. All songs sound so peaceful and relaxing it almost seems I'm stepping on heaven. This band is so underrated.

    L.... ....

yup. After yer done with Quebec, try out some of the demos they put out.

    L.... ....

    LeShift duuuuuuuuuuude

    L.... ....

    WHA T

    L.... ....

  62. S.... ....

I don't think I'm going to be able to survive without Ween for my upcoming Divorce.

  63. z.... ....

in a depression this songs come sudently and stay on my mind all the afternoon, love it.

  64. J.... L....

    What a song. Wow. I love ❤😘ween 4 ever

  65. R.... R....

Has a similar sound and vibe to Genesis when it was Peter Gabriel's band.

  66. s.... ....

This is the same group that made Big Fat Fuck

    s.... ....

    spookypen they're pretty versatile

  67. f.... l....

Gene and Dean you my ninjas!

  68. I.... ....

I love how difficult it is to ever find a negative comment on a Ween song/album.

    I.... ....

Most people that listen to ween really like them

    I.... ....

That's because they're not popular enough that people start hating on them just because they're popular.

  69. j.... ....

One day in the year of the fox...

  70. G.... W....

Discovered Ween recently, i really like this.

  71. S.... ....

"It's only man's fear that carries him on..." Wow, that is... genuinely deep for Ween.

  72. M.... N....

If 4:20 wasnt the most uplifting moment in your idk year

  73. J.... C....

    The watcher

  74. t.... D....

Zoloft is a way better song than this

    t.... D....

thomas Day they are both good and have the same amount of quality

  75. I.... ....

Every time I listen to this album on the bus I’ll listen to as much as possible on both rides, but almost always end up not wanting to miss the last two tracks; I skip to them if I’m not already there.

  76. L.... J....

    Best song ever written

  77. S.... M....

Ween's magnum opus. Songs like these give life meaning.

  78. G.... T....

I love how the song just switches

  79. A.... H....

This song is obviously a tribute to Wishbone Ash!

  80. P.... K....

Argus Panoptes was a hundred-eyed giant in Greek mythology. The son of Arestor, whose name "Panoptes" meant "the all-seeing one".

  81. G.... J....

This is a master class in songwriting, best enjoyed through a good pair of headphones and with closed eyes.

  82. S.... L....

3:10 to the end is some of the greatest music ever put to recording.

    S.... L....

I agree. Admittedly I only just started diving further into Ween and their songs, but this is definitely one of my favorites, especially from 3:10 to the end like you said

    S.... L....

Yep, 3:10 to the end is beyond words. It's that part that got me coming back to the song but the more I listen, the more I feel like every note is genius from start to finish. It's very 70s Jethro Tullish, but still totally Ween. This is probably my favorite song of theirs, and that's really saying something because they have so many incredible tracks.

    S.... L....

@Tim M could you recommend some Jethro Tull tracks that sounds like that? I'm not familiar with them but i would love to hear more music like this.

    S.... L....

    @The Fighter

Sure, I'd start with the Thick As A Brick album. That album is one long song, and it's about 45 minutes long, but it's an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. It's one of those you like more and more, the more you listen to it. If you want a more traditional classic rock approach, listen to the Benefit album. Aqualung is also a great album. Those 3 are the best, but Thick As A Brick is just one of those you can smoke a little weed to, sit back and go on a journey with.

ween is the best band ever to be seen in this universe

    C.... ....

They have a few good albums but they surely have a few duds in their discography as well.

  89. G.... ....

Anyone get a strong Guinevere by Crosby Stills & Nash vibe from this? Def an influencer

  90. g.... ....

    Posting the lyrics for myself:

Yesterday we lost r lives, tomorrow we were born

Magna eyes that track 4 miles, looking 4 disease

@Tyler Purcell Don't mention it, Tyler

  92. B.... D....

I understand the Floyd comparison. But come on now..both are incomparable .both equally responsible for a gnarly soundtrack for life

  93. f.... ....

Ween's finest approach to prog imo

  94. F.... F....

Man I need to use this in a video...

  95. .... ....

Man if Ween doesn't make a new album soon they should at least go into a studio a re-record a bunch of their songs with slight variations and improvements because I'd buy that shit instantly. Applying their current skills to older songs and re-imagining some songs would be tight.... or, make a blues/jazzy or reggae album sorta the same way they approached making a country album. I'd buy that shit twice and so would tons of people.

    .... ....

    マックスシュッツェ

They kinda just do that live tbh. Their older work that is seemingly tougher to listen to is imo tremendous live tbh.

    .... ....

Really is @StadiumHot. Haha I was talking to someone who had The Mollusk CD but never saw Ween live and they asked how a weird sea shanty on pcp song like The Blarney Stone translates to a live show... Bwahahaha got out the Live in Chicago and was like "the weird sea shanty live, at a ween show, is a show-closing epic crowd favorite sing-along that turns the whole crowd into a bunch of swaying, beer-swinging Aye-yiyi-ing pirates. 😂 That's how it translates live.

I lpve their albums, but if you're looking to make a genuine Boognish-worshipping convert out of someone, take them to a show or at least make them sit down and watch some of Live in Chicago. I got Soo many people into Ween just having that dvd on in the background while people hung out with me and my ex, til the songs and stage energy enticed my uninitiated friends into going, "Who is this again? Damn I like this" lol. Couple of them went to shows with us after that 😀

  96. .... ....

    💖Ween is so addictive.💖
