Virtually all sad rock songs do. You can extract a drug interpretation from almost any broken heart/breakup song very easily due to the overlapping emotions of loss, pain, anxiety and depression. Take Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana. That to me seems one of the most overt songs about Heroin addiction ever written (besides maybe Needle and the Damage Done) but many people think it's just about Courtney.

Elliott Smith did release music prior to this album. Roman Candle was out months before. But yeah, very similar sound.

Elliott rarely did open chord patterns like this though, he usually had something a little more complicated going on with either finger picking or the way the bass notes alternate or the way the chords move from one to the next in harmony with his vocal lines (i can't really explain what i mean here, but think of in Between the Bars during the "Peopleeee that you've been before..." part). I think it's just Gener's vocals that sound similar here but I totally thought there was some connection between this song and ES at first too.

Actually Gener has said this song was about an ex. And the lyrics "wrote birthday boy for you babe" ...which if you do any research you will find that birthday boy was written for a girlfriend

Almost all alternative music is tied to dysfunction or addiction in some way or another. Music is a powerful tool for altering one's consciousness and killing pain, but it doesn't come close to heroin when the chips are down.

Nevertheless I'm dubious of this being about heroin addiction because I don't think Gene had gotten hard into dope at the time this album was released.
