Waylon Jennings - Song For The Life Lyrics
I don't drink as much as I ought to
Lately it just ain't my style
And the hard times don't hurt like they used to
They pass quicker like when I was a child.
And it sounds like the sun going down
In the magic that morning is bringing
There's a song for the life I have found.
It keeps my feet on the ground.
The mid summer days ain't so heavy
They just flow like a breeze through your mind
And nothing appears in a hurry
To make up for some old lonesome time.
And it sounds like the breeze dying down
In the magic that morning is bringing
There's a song for a friend that I have found.
She keeps my feet on the ground...

—Waylon, a much loved man;
every soul’s dad.
Beautiful thank You
Beautiful
Beautiful🐎🍂🍁
Actually listen to this song and you can hear Waylon telling you about life and the steel guitar and solo
Rip Outlaw.
I love this song !
💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
That's what I like about classic country. Singers had signature voices. Today they all sound a like.
I believe Tony Rice is the version Alison Krauss was inspired by. Both great versions too. Great song!
I didn't know Waylon Jennings and Rodney Crowel sung this song. I've heard Alan Jackson's version.
Same here heard Alan Jackson's version really liked it also. First time hearing Waylons version. Sounds great!!
Rodney Crowell wrote it.
Hell yeah
Alison Kraus does this song best
You've been waylonized in 2019!
God bless all of you
I know right
How is it possible to thumb down for this kind of music
She keeps my feet on the ground
I Love Waylon Jennings Music...All those dislikes are either jealous or don't know GREAT music when they hear it!!!
I can really identify with this song. Don't know why anybody would take the time to click on a thumb's down - why don't they just move on?
I don’t drink as much as I ought to
This song here is just an awesome song and so true good job Hoss We still all love your music and the ones that do will always be there loving your music and wishing we would have gotten to know you 💃💃🎲 😂
Waylon is the real legend.
Did HE EVER SING a bad song ? I don't think so!!
NEVER . gerrit from holland.
Never ever!
There will never be a Waylon Jennings country Will never be the same kids today will never know what true country is all about.. True country is what made life so pure and full of love.. For those who keeps listening to old time country knows how to love and k ows what life is all about ....
Yes you are so right in all you've said here ..i loved Waylons songs myself n still listen to them !! He was the greatest!!..im going on 77 n his songs will play on my last days;!!
i would trade my right leg for his voice to come back
Arkansas Kid Arkansas Kid
with Waylon’s peace of mind, I think he’d tell you to keep your leg to keep walking towards that sunrise, and find your happiness.
I know what it’s like to stay up all night, because that serenity of serenity, with that glass. Trying to feel yourself, whilst numbing the pain that comes with that painful emotion of life.
But these words say “wake up and watch that sunrise instead” wake up and make something of this new day.
“She” keeps my feet on the ground.
“She” is the day.
The new day is the mother that gives you life every day. That’s the opportunity “she” gives you.
Waylon's. The. Best. They. Don't. Come. No. Better.
A great song written by the master. I love his version but this is great too
Second to none!
Never too old to learn.
Like that one too
Pure country! Can't get any better!
I checked AJ’s version based on some of the comments here. I didn’t get through the first line before I shut it off! Waylon is Country yes, but he doesn’t try to sound Country. What’s wrong with these Country artists who are trying on purpose to sound Country? Seriously, just sing the song you idiot! These prepackaged Country singers need to stop!
Back when country music had lyrics that meant something deeper than beers on a tailgate of her daddy's lifted truck in the hay....
No one can wail like Ol' Waylon.........................If you've never heard his "One & Only" album or listened to "The Dark Side Of Fame" & "Singer of Sad Songs"....you don't know what you're missing..........He's WAY-MORE than just the King of Outlaw Country!!!
A song for Life beautiful song love u Waylon Jennings always an forever❤❤❤❤
This is an amazing song, and if I hadn't known Rodney Crowell was a sighted person I would have thought him blind. It mentions the sound of the sun going down, that is perspective and Waylon captures it perfectly! Rodney Crowell is a great songwriter and Waylon gave his song the royal treatment it deserves.
best love song ever
So agree...With ~The Band's~ "It Makes No Difference" (The Last Waltz) at a close second :)
clumsiii v
wow ,outstanding. ..Love Waylon
A song about growing older, knowing pain and love, realizing your mortal and only know half of what you thought you did. Rodney Crowell was hurting when he penned this.
Love Waylon singing this song Rodney Crowell wrote x
I hope the 14 people who Thumbs-Down'd this find something real nice and tall to fall off of
as I listen to this, the count of dislikes has grown to 26 --- must all be yuppies
It makes some people feel powerful to register a dislike. They're such sad excuses for humans, I feel only pity for them!
They are probably too high on drugs and do not understand what this song says. Retards and probably just like that trashy rap singing if you can even call it singing songs. .
You are right and funny too
Casey Stewart lol
Love this man
Who's the guy standing next to Waylon with his arms crossed in the picture at 2:03/2:04? He looks really familiar.
Jeff Kutach I think maybe billy ray cyrus
who's the country singer in the black and white picture that's standing next to Waylon at 29 seconds into the video?
@Jeff Kutach Jerry Reed.
Beautiful song by Waylon. I haven't heard it before. Is it one of his CDs?
Country music is priceless. Sadly, Waylon is no longer around to perform even more of it. Bless him dearly.
God bless you

WOW!!! Some def dude hit dislike 8 times! 8 TIMES! Lest all pitch in and get him a battery for that hearing aid, so he can hear 1 of the best ! R.I.P. waylon. Miss ya, love ya , OUTLAW!!!
I just learned this beautiful song was written and played by Rodney Crowell -- still --- nothing like Waylon's voice
I loved Johnny Cash...Watched Him on His TV Show back in The 60s (I believe) but NO one could do "I Walk The Line" like Waylon Jennings
Is this song on any of his c.d.s'? First time I have heard it. Gotta have it.
First one I heard sing this was Jerry Jeff Walker! This close to that. Great song!
Jerry Jeff Walker...BRILLIANT Songwriter and Performer...
are those your signed albums that you have? if so im SOOOO jealous , I wish I could have met this great man :) thanks for the songs
This song and the fact that Waylon sings it and that he is the first one I heard sing it, this song means alot to me, FOREVER A WAYLON JENNINGS FAN and I don't care if you like him or not as long as you like good country music
I like the first version, by Johnathan Edwards came out in the seventies. this was written by Rodney Crowell and he nails this song down himself. I heard him do it live at the Western Roots Revival when it was at Zanies on Douglas ave. here in Nashville. But I do think Waylon was one of the greatest country artists and does a fine job on this. He also was a great guy to be around, I had the pleasure of working with him on a session.
Without a doubt, this is the best version of this song...
to the people that disliked this song you can kiss my ass
Beautiful indeed. A hint of George Jones in Waylon's intonation, especially around 1:17. The song reminds me of my favorite Waylong song, the beautiful confessional love song, The Most Sensible Thing.
Didn't know Waylon did this. I like AJs version. Great song either way. By two great singers.
R.I.P Teddie,you will be missed
@dannyd1572 yup i agree. didnt know waylon did it, but i prefer AJ's version
Fabulous singing by Waylon and Fabulous playing, there is no one who could do it like this.
Muriel xxx Thanks for posting teddie488
@teddie488 That was the same place I interviewed Ringo Starr and several others. I was only 18 and am not sure I realized the magnitude of who I was watching or interviewing. Now I look back and think how fortunate I was to be on the same stage watching legends such as Christopherson, Willie, Cash and Waylon all in this amazing supergroup. You're right...I will never forget that night :)
@teddie488 I used to work in radio. I was on stage right, in the wings, when the Highway Men played Farm Aid in Ames. I think 1990. I got some neat pics. I remember hollering at Waylon- Can I have your hat? And he pointed to his hat and I yelled "yeah, your hat!" and he goes "Shit no!" If you watch the vid of the song Highwaymen on You Tube it looks like he's kind of talking to someone down stage right. Could have been me. LOL I'll never forget that night.
I love Waylon. I didn't know he did this one. However, I got to go with Alan Jackson's version on this one.
You have a great collection of Waylon's songs Thanks for sharing!!
If you dont like WAYLON JENNINGS you can KISS MY ASS ........WAYLON RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rodney Crowell wrote this masterpiece
Thank you teddie. These are great. Some I have never heard. Waylon is with the angels leading the chorus in heaven.
@ttjones1965 I love it too...a lot! It's a great song as only Waylon could sing it...
You and Lucy sure know how to pick 'em!
Thanks Eddie...and to TJ too...A beautiful song with beautiful lyrics..WJ does it justice...with that great voice of his.
Just as a point of interest, there is another version of this song sung by a one-time singer named Randy Gurley in 1978. The power of this song really comes through when you you hear both versions of it. You can also hear the power of vocals of these renditions :)
Beautiful!! Sad, but beautiful!! Thank you for all your great Waylon songs!
I love this song...it's gotta be one of my most favorites...I like the mandolin(?) in the background...beautiful sound!
Beautiful song, first time I heard it
Thanks a lot..!!
This song is Waylon!!!!!..wish he was still with us..to help us get on in this crazy world!
I think this is the one song I will have played at my funeral. Just beautiful...and so much truth.
Thanks Teddie.
Hi Teddie,
Will be fully recovered by June 3rd, but already feeling stronger.
