Watson, Gene - The Old Man And His Horn Lyrics
The old man told his story
About the years gone by
How he played his horn down in New Orleans
In some old dingy dive
"I knew 'em all back then" he said
He closed his eyes and wet his lips
Then the blues were born
He played with so much feelin'
Tears came from his eyes
He stopped and reminisced a bit
And then he gave a sigh!
Said, "You know, I almost made it
But that was before your time
Dixieland, Po' Folks Blues
Slapped his knee and gave a grin
It sure was good back then
Reaching for his horn on the floor
Placed it in an old towsack
That hung across his back
He said "Goodbye!"
And shuffled out the door
I never got his name
So, I called the waitress over
And started to explain
A tired old man, his tarnished horn
Mem'ries of years gone by
How he played his horn and reminisced
Smiled with tear-dimmed eyes
She said you are mistaken
There's been no one but you
But I know who you're talkin' 'bout
I used to know him, too
In back of an old churchyard
A stone that reads, "Rest in Peace"
I tried but it sure was hard"
Slapped his knee and gave a grin
It sure was good back then
Reaching for his horn on the floor
Placed it in an old towsack
That hung across his back
He said "Goodbye!"
And shuffled out the door

Gene Watson absolutely the top....I go to sleep at night listening to him...FANTASTIC
Love this song and video. Thanks
Yes was there in the 90's ! Best Gene !
I agree. He should be in hall of fame. They added pop country artists. They have ignored the great country artists. This is a shame. Example: it took Jean Shepard 55 years to get inducted. She was also a country pioneer. A great country artist like Gene.
Gene Watson sure is one of those great singers, this is so incredibly beautiful and the guy is rumored NOT to be in Country Music Hall Of Fame , how about that, wake up America

I was reading the comments and you're all right. Gene has a voice that can't be matched.
Danny Rainwater on HORN Thanks Dan
he is the BEST I only knew about 2 of them in 70's & 80's, "Where love begins " &
" Farewell Party ". All these years, I can't believe I did not know ANY OF THEM. HE DOESN'T HAVE A BAD SONG. I ALSO THINK HE'S BETTER NOW THAN WHEN LISTENING TO HIM THRU' the YEARS, meaning he got BETTER WITH TIME. I couldn't think of the title of one of the 2. SONGS I liked. I asked google, using only a few lines of it & Used. his name: by Gene Watson. it immediately GENE WATSON. came up, of course, 'WHERE LIVE BEGINS". I have been LISTENING TO HIM EVER SINCE.
My husband sings & plays guitar still at age 74. He is a hard critic & he said " I had no idea he was that good". He also said you had a good song writer & band. He liked Glen Campbell & Chet Atkins on guitar, bests; and NO ONE BETTER. SINGER THAN GENE WATSON THAN "ELVIS". I agree. GENE WATSON IS THE BEST SINGER OF ALL COUNTRY, I LOVED GEORGE JONES BUT NOW, I KNOW, GENE WATSON IS BETTER THAN HIM.
me too my friend
Deana Robinson Gene's Farewell Party is one of the best country songs ever written. I think I'll have it played at MY farewell party.
My father loved "Farewell Party". He's been gone 14 years and I still can't listen to it without crying
