Warwick, Dionne - One Less Bell To Answer Lyrics

One less bell to answer
One less egg to fry
One less man to pick up after
I should be happy
But all I do is cry

(Cry, cry, no more laughter)
Oh, I should be happy
(Oh, why did he go)
I only know that since he left
My life's so empty

Though I try to forget
It just can't be done
Each time the doorbell rings
I still run
I don't know how in the world
To stop thinking of him
'Cause I still love him so
I end each day the way I start out
Crying my heart out

Oh, one less man to pick up after
No more laughter
No more love
Since he went, oh he went away (he went away)

(One less bell to answer)
Why did he leave me
(Oh why, why, why did he leave)
(One less bell to answer)
Now I've got one less egg to fry
One less egg to fry
(Oh why, why, why did he leave)
And all I do is cry
(One less bell to answer)
Because my man told me goodbye
(Oh why, why, why did he leave)
(One less bell to answer)
Somebody tell me please
Where did he go, why did he go
(Ohy, why, why did he leave)
Tell me, how could he leave me

That's when you notice what a superb arranger Bacharach is. When he's not around Dionne can't make it up all by herself.

I love this song. I heard Dionne sang this song on the Carol Burnett Show in 1971. Oh how I would love to see that performance. I love Dionne. She's one of my all time favorite divas that's still here. Most of my favorites have passed on.

  9. C.... ....

Dionne Warwick knows how to take a melancholic song about heartbreak and turn into an enchantingly beautiful song like this one. There's just no musician like her out there.

  10. C.... ....

My favorite version of this classic.

  11. T.... D....

    Just simply beautiful.

  12. g.... ....

First recorded by Keely Smith and released as a 45 rpm in 1967, Ms. Warwick stated that she originally felt the song didn't suit her.

  13. D.... M....

This 1 by Dionne who had `a cool 1st name' is a really "Soul-version" of this song!:)

  17. M.... T....

Its so much better and the power and interpretation is dead on

  18. J.... J....

I Know The 5th Dimension originally did this song but I'm Sorry I can't get Dionne's version out of my head. I've been playing this for years. I pray and hope to see a visual one day. This song is absolutely beautiful and I love Dionne's interpretation.

Check her concert at The Rainbow Room with Burt Bacharach. She performs it with a whole orchestra. Totally mesmerizing.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could hear the 1963 demo recording? I hope to hear it before leaving this mortal coil.

I was at that concert at The Melody Tent 2 nights in a row. Her performance left me breathless as she ended it on, “and all I do is cryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy”. It was heart stopping. I actually recorded it and will post here if I can locate the old cassette.
