Warren Zevon - My Ride's Here Lyrics

I was staying at the Marriott
With Jesus and John Wayne
I was waiting for a chariot
They were waiting for a train
The sky was full of carrion
"I'll take the mazuma"
Said Jesus to Marion
"That's the 3:10 to Yuma
My ride's here..."

The Houston sky was changeless
We galloped through bluebonnets
I was wrestling with an angel
You were working on a sonnet
You said, "I believe the seraphim
Will gather up my pinto
And carry us away, Jim
Across the San Jacinto
My ride's here..."

Shelley and Keats were out in the street
And even Lord Byron was leaving for Greece
While back at the Hilton, last but not least
Milton was holding his sides
Saying, "You bravos had better be
ready to fight
Or we'll never get out of East Texas tonight
The trail is long and the river is wide
And my ride's here"

I was staying at the Westin
I was playing to a draw
When in walked Charlton Heston
With the Tablets of the Law
He said, "It's still the Greatest Story"
I said, "Man, I'd like to stay
But I'm bound for glory
I'm on my way
My ride's here..."

Warren Zevon My Ride's Here Comments
  1. A.... a....

    Damn I miss Warren!

  2. P.... B....

Stayin' at the Marriott with Jesus and John Wayne

  3. n.... A....

It is poetry! and it's odd, off the wall, and all completly believable. I truly consider him a great writer. I mean fuck; to come up with starting a song "I called up my friend Leroy on the phone". Kiss that Melville; you and Ishmel.

  4. s.... h....

It's in my will. This song and Jungle Work will be played at my funeral. Warren was the best. He had a lot of soldiers that listened to and loved his music.

  5. J.... ....

Jann Wenner is a dick who's keeping WZ out of the HOF for personal reasons

  6. J.... T....

good man great song writer out kicked his coverage on this one , RIP

  7. J.... M....

The song I want played at my funeral.

  8. D.... P....

One of the best eulogies I can think of. Just the lightest touch....

  9. T.... ....

But first...a quick stop to get sandwiches

  10. k.... ....

this could have been written for my friend

  11. p.... r....

Warren Zevon is not in the HOF for one reason only....Jann Wenner! The little bitch has a gripe about him bailing out in the middle of one of his shows Wenner had some of his mucky muck friends at. Grow up and get over it you pompus ass!!

  12. P.... H....

    And the ride is amazing

  13. S.... ....

+ Monsieur De Bear. I think I got your name. Another brilliant song by Warren Zevon. Warren loves to interject history wherever he can. Did I hear Byron and Keats?
A lot of people are wondering how close this song was to his death and I have to say, without being specific that at some point in his life, certainly not his 20's or early 30's, but a little later, some of his songs took on a premonition quality, as to things to come. You can do a time line as to when each song was written. When asked, he has tried to explain it.

    S.... ....

Much of his songs were about death even early in his career. He had a morbidity to his living as well as his later in life impending death.

  14. E.... S....

and by the way I'm a native Houston Texan and a song writer,36years we still talk about our friend Warren I miss him every day he was no phoney Like so many people in this business what you saw was what you got if you're a fan of his music then you know Warren his songwriting was not just cutting himself to the bone he was into his marrow
one more time , they'll never be another Warren.

    E.... S....

    So true

  15. E.... S....

this song just lifts my spirits I'm convinced Warren made his peace with Jesus this is his farewell to us and he faced the grim reaper with his courage and in peace , they'll never be another human being like him I say human because that's what he shared with us his beautiful and flawed humanity.

    E.... S....

    I really hope so

  16. k.... ....

He always came up with good tunes but then they were combined with that voice and attitude .... a fantastic mix.

  17. M.... E....

I bought my first Zevon album Excitable Boy in like 1979 with golf caddy money. I have bought every Zevon album then and before since. Cherish your Zevon. There will never be another! Now I got to go, my ride's here!

    M.... E....

    Beautifully put my friend!

  18. G.... F....

    Greatest song writer WARREN ZEVON

    G.... F....

    Agreed!!

  19. R.... T....

Goodbye wz miss you like family. Our rides coming I can feel it. I can't wait, its all too wrong. See you playing again lotsa love man. Russelltorres86

  20. M.... P....

    He was the best

  21. r.... ....

Interestingly, these lyrics were principally written by Irish poet Paul Muldoon and set to music by Zevon. Zevon collaborated with a few celebrated authors on the My Ride's Here LP, including Hunter S. Thompson. IMO, this is the most successful of the bunch. Muldoon also wrote a beautiful elegy for Warren called "Sillyhow Stride" that you can read here: http://warrenzevon.wikia.com/wiki/Sillyhow_Stride

  22. g.... s....

let' say Bob Dylan's Nobel prize includes the shared works of artists like Warren Zevon, Bruce Springsteen and more, whose poetry inflames imagination and inspires curious readers for future generations to read good lit. and write great songs, plagiarize all you want but give thanks and shout out. this will do for anyone's funeral procession too, plus Every Grain Of Sand.

    g.... s....

My sister played this as the closing song as we left the funeral home for her husband.57 is way too young to die. Enjoy your ride John we love you a bunch brother.

  23. T.... H....

    "Screw you, Death."

    - Warren Zevon

  24. K.... L....

hope your hanging in there Brenda. I got my Splendid Isolation. It's getting kinda RUFF for me but as He said just can't quit.

  25. K.... L....

we all get our tickets we all take the trip, unfortunately for Mr. Bad Example His was way too Short .

Thank you Warren, you make waiting for my Ride much less painful 💀

  26. B.... ....

So is mine, Warren, my friend. Just waiting, like you did... marking time, still enjoying every sandwich, savoring every taste of family, friends, laughter and tears.....and you, Mr. Bad Example. Just....you. Your words, your music, your incredible courage. I wouldn't have fought this long without the example you set, the unbelievable strength you showed. And I don't give a fuck what "they" say you did...and, yeah, I've heard it all. Let THEM get that karate-kick in the gut "You're going to die...we give you 3 months." Let them be told that and not be scared half-crazy. Yeah. I have felt what you felt...and your music is sometimes all that's kept me sane. See you soon, WZ...and then I can thank you in person....

    B.... ....

Brenda Harper Well said, Brenda- I wish you all the best

    B.... ....

Joseph Belli Thank you, Joseph. The kindness, prayers and encouragement I've received from my fellow Zevonites has been one of the things which has kept me strong, lo, these past few months. And I've come to the conclusion that WZ's fans are very much like him: exceptional. Keep me in your heart for a while -- as I'll keep all of you in mine...in this life and the one to come. Brenda "Kat" Harper

    B.... ....

Brenda Harper I got my diagnoses now three years ago, I just cant quit thats some fucked up shit, colorectal cancer. this Man and his songs are a great inspiration to many who wait. Stay strong,

    B.... ....

@Kevin Perry I dont know if it brands me as some kinda weirdo--that a man who has been gone for 13 years is such a powerful source of inspiration and strength for me. I've been told so. Don't give a fat rat's ass, to be honest. I was blessed to have met him in '95...He was funny, kind and generous with his time--we talked for nearly an hour in a Borders bookstore. Then I followed his valiant battle and grieved when he passed. Now, I'm fighting the same kind of war, and if anything my respect for Warren Zevon has grown exponentially since I got my diagnosis. 3 months. Is that their standard projection when what they're really saying is you have no hope? Fuck em! That was over 14 months ago...And countless long, cold scarey nights when WZ's music is my comfort and encouragement. My fiance, Brody, tells me I can beat this...He is my other Source. Without him and WZ, I'd be tore up from the floor up, instead of determined and defiant. Thank you, Kevin. Your strength nourishes my own, and I have had such loving, encouraging messages from those who "get" Zevon...Words cannot express my gratitude.May you live as long as you want to....And want to as long as you live! Lol Stay strong, friend. As will I...

    B.... ....

    Fucking A: 'Enjoy every sandwich!

  27. k.... ....

he left us way too soon.

    k.... ....

    Absolutely

  28. s.... ....

    This is motivation.Peace.

  29. B.... G....

Goodbye Kristen May You Rest In Peace

  30. B.... ....

Still Kat Harper...system eff up meant different name. But its still me. Just found out, Warren, my friend: MY ride's coming fairly soon. My one hope is I meet mine with a tiny fraction of your courage. Rock the pillars of Heaven, Mr. Bad Example...I'll be seeing you real soon.......and its OK.

    B.... ....

Kat Harper still here...sorta! Absolutely, my friend. Just a few more munches on this sandwich, then my ride'll be here. I'll give WZ your loves...Enjoy every bite, till it's time to sleep!

    B.... ....

+adandap And thanks for the encouragement, my friend!

    B.... ....

Brenda and kat harper Godspeed to you both. I wish my ride was here love to ask warren a few things. Miss him like family.

    B.... ....

Russell Torres Kat Harper still here...kinda like WZ, they told me 3 months...shading sharply on to 3 years, with some days better than others. I know what you mean about missing Warren like family. In a way he WAS family...the wise, smartass big brother who could take Life's craziness and make it make sense. It's his birthday...he'd have been 71. And he'd have hated it. "I don't wanna grow old gracefully...I don't wanna go til it's too late." His Renegade soul still inspires me on days when I want to scream."....Just TAKE me already!!!"Warren's music pulls me thru. Hang in there, Russell...and I'll tell WZ "Hello" for ya. Enjoy every sandwich!

    B.... ....

@Brenda Harper How about now, Brenda? Still enjoying every sandwich? Just wanted to check with you.

  31. m.... P....

With the world in the shape it's in now, take me back!

  32. C.... C....

Why won't they put him in the HOF.

    C.... C....

Fools at the R&RHoF base everything on record sales $$$

    C.... C....

They can't see true talent with their eyes closed

    C.... C....

He paved the way for so many others into the HOF. Not sure, but he may prefer it this way!

    C.... C....

    They're dumb

    C.... C....

    its a popularity contest

  33. D.... R....

A constant inspiration, long after he's gone.

  34. K.... H....

Today was one of those days for me, when the pervasive ugliness in this sad old world is SO insistent, I can't tune it out...when I stare my own impending mortality smack in its boney face...and i am afraid. I listen to Warren's songs, immerse myself in the always-surprising complexity of his music, and apply the balm of his poetry to my injured soul...and I find peace. Warren, my friend...I can never thank you enough. Perhaps someday I will tell you, face to face. Perhaps someday....

    K.... H....

    Kat,
I too feel the impending sadness hard to explain, it everywhere if you can see. Warren was a hero, miss the man and the music.
Keep the faith Kat and keep listening. Gotta go, my rides here...

    K.... H....

Kat ....there's going to be someone, from the other side, to hand as you pass out of this world to the glory that awaits.

    K.... H....

    You shall meet him indeed

    K.... H....

    That is beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

    K.... H....

I don’t know you but you sound great

  35. J.... C....

    Dave sent me.

  36. b.... j....

Hard core put in easier terms...Warren is greatly missed.

  37. w.... ....

this song must be about hes passing is it?

    w.... ....

@FrozenNotes oh right wrong i was so

    w.... ....

@wabblum99 No worries. It's still about dying, so it's still a good guess.

    w.... ....

    @Jim Short ah no bother

    w.... ....

@wabblum99 A great musician, the world is a lesser place.  Fins "I was in the House When the House Burned Down", or if you can a song he did in some intimate venue (anybody know?) called "My $hit'S "F"'d Up" .  Damn poignant in how's he is coming to grips with the news..

    w.... ....

@Gonzo Babba my favourite by zevon is "carmelita"

  38. J.... P....

Warren is sorely missed. So many amazing songs.

    B.... G....

@Gonzo Babba I always assumed that was a hearse. Now I have to go search for similar windows in Rolls. lol.

    B.... G....

+Gonzo Babba For that photo , Warren is sitting in the back of a lincoln Towncar Limousine ; those rear windows only roll down as far as in the picture. I know , I've drove limousines for almost 10 years now.

  40. m.... n....

Just watched the entire series of Californication from Showtime on Netflix in a span of about 3 weeks. So many Zevon references it sent me back to my exploration of my one of my biggest influences. Miss him a lot.

    m.... n....

Whisky, weed, and Zevon - the trilogy!

  41. B.... G....

This is Warren at his best saying goodbye to his Fans or as he refered to us fans his customers Yeah its 3:10 Yuma It's kind of History Lesson Too

    B.... G....

Strangely Enough Warren did not know of his terminal disease when he wrote and recorded this song.

    B.... G....

    Brian Grant because there idiotic

    B.... G....

@FrozenNotes You're thinking of "My shit's fucked up". He played it at First Ave, Minneapolis in '98.

My Ride's Here was in response to being diagnosed.

  42. A.... K....

My older brother used to talk about Warren Zevon a lot. They have both passed but I am mature enough now to understand the genius behind the music. May you both rest in peace.

    A.... K....

My younger brother died last year. 'Keep me in your heart' was read at his funeral. Pete had never heard of this guy Warren Zevon, but the man's words resonated like a hymn. Your older brother, my younger brother, they're doin' just fine right now.

  43. J.... S....

1:07.. Apparently Jim didn't get his lungs ripped out by the Werewolves Of London...

    J.... S....

1:55 but Warren's lungs sure took some wear

  44. R.... L....

    on my headstone.....

  45. H.... ....

This is one of my favorites by him...but I have a lot of favorites by Warren.  :)

  46. J.... S....

Possibly my favorite Warren Zevon song. This will, of course, change tomorrow, when it will be "Johnny Strikes Up The Band". or Tenderness On The Block", or "Charlie's Medicine", or perhaps "The Hula Hula Boys."

    J.... S....

I know that feeling, you just gotta enjoy every sandwich.

    J.... S....

    Great song

    J.... S....

    OR THE HOCKEY SONG.

    J.... S....

Definitely my favorite or perhaps Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, or Lawers Guns and Money, or Things to do in Denver When You're Dead, or Numb As A Statue.

  47. q.... ....

largely undervalued in his time. rest easy warren zevon, your stuff made the grade

  48. b.... j....

3152 views of this song proves Warren Zevon was far ahead of his time and only the cutting edge people can get his music. But that has always been the case.He was the favorite of the huge names in music for 30 years....Only Dylan came close to him..RIP Warren Zevon..God Almighty we needed you to stay.
