Wall, Colter - Bald Butte Lyrics
Bald Butte, Bald Butte so lofty and so high
Carry me to Bald Butte
Where the plains wrap round the sky
You can dig a hole on Bald Butte when I die
A paint horse he did ride
Well he roped him in Alberta
Broke him on the Montana line
Tore him a trail through the northwest countryside
Henry took to stealing
Robbing on the CP Rail
He got the devil on his shoulders
And the law man on his tail
You better ride, Henry ride
Well he rode across the Grey Back camp
Up in Cypress Hills
They said they left the US nation
On the day that Richmond fell
They whistled Dixie and set him up a still
Henry woke the next morn
Like a corpse from the grave
Half blind and twice as haggard
He took a cast iron to the brain
They stole his horse and the rifle that shared his name
And he tracked them former Johnny Rebs
Through the prairie and the trees
Up old Castle Mountain
Cross the river Wapiti
Low and behold, what do you think he sees
I see my paint
I see my rifle that shares my name
I see them men that done me wrong
Lord, I'm gonna do them just the same
Henry grabbed his rifle
Up off of the ground
He kissed the ever-loving barrel
And he shot them old boys down
They hit the dirt, he revelled in the sound
Now he's back up in the saddle
Back up on the top
When he felt that southern slug
Chew a hole right through his gut
He thought he killed them all
But he had not
That paint took off a running
Through the water and the mud
No earthly force in this whole world
Could stop that 'Berta stud
Henry sat there laughing up his blood
And he was singing
Bald Butte, Bald Butte so lofty and so high
Carry me to Bald Butte
Where the plains wrap round the the sky
You can dig a hole on Bald Butte when I die

Wall, Colter Bald Butte Comments
Colter Wall has some amazing shit. I’m very particular about my country music. More folk than country. I don’t like a lot of his stuff, but this right here , wow
I finally decided to buy a guitar and sing country ya'll
I listen to and love most of the types of music but man believe it or not, real and pure country is just hell of a good thing to spend time with 🎶💚🍻
I am a weird Mexican married to a white boy that truly enjoys this beautiful country music!
*Plays Red Dead Redemption II once*
This song should be a movie
My current favorite from Mr. Wall
Maybe its the weed, maybe it's these bad ass headphones. But damn that's good work!!!Right on Colter
I think....Mr. C. Wall is a walking, singin' middle finger to autotuned.
colter wall replacing story time
All those 201 likes should be burned.
This and Bob Fudge are easily some of my favorite song writing across any genre. If you get a chance to see Colter live do it.
This is definitely the music to play Red Dead redemption 2 to.
Henry sat there laughing up his blood ....as he sang Bald Butte! That's a tough country boy right there
Music was good when it had a story, I'm happy to see at least one modern artist knows how to do it right.
Best thing to come out of Canada since maple syrup
This guy is the absolute truth. Love from The UK.
Id love hear this live
This needs to be in more playlists! Amazing song!
this guy is a gold mine i wanna dig out in california
I’m in!!
Who ever disliked this is mentally challenged.
musically* challenged
FTFY
One of my favorites! Sweet song. Hope Mr. Wall tours BC soon
Just as good as any of the classic gunfighter ballads! Look out Marty ;)
No one will ever be as good as Marty Robbins
@J.T
i gotta agree with you there, but Colter has a place at the table for certain.
He did Big Iron in ND I got to see it it was amazing
Bald Butte, Bald Butte so lofty and so high
Carry me to Bald Butte
Where the plains wrap around the sky
You can dig a hole on Bald Butte when I die
Henry was born on Bald Butte
A paint horse he did ride
Well he roped him in Alberta
Broke him on the Montana line
Tore him a trail through the northwest countryside
Henry took to stealing
Robbing on the CP Rail
He got the devil on his shoulders
And the lawman on his tail
You better ride, Henry ride
You ain't got no friends to go your bail
Well he rode across the Grey Back camp
Up in Cypress Hills
They said they left the US nation
On the day that Richmond fell
They whistled Dixie and set him up for still
Henry woke the next morn
Like a corpse from the grave
Half blind and twice as haggard
He took a cast iron to the brain
They stole his horse and the rifle that shared his name
And he tracked them former Johnny Rebs
Through the prairie and the trees
Up old Castle Mountain
Cross the river wide PT
Low and behold, what do you think he sees
I see my paint
I see my rifle that shares my name
I see them men that done me wrong
Lord, I'm gonna do them just the same
Henry grabbed his rifle
Up off of the ground

"Cross the river wide PT". Now I'm not Canadian. But I'm pretty sure it's "cross the river Wapiti"?
"he's got the devil on his shoulders and the lawmen on his tail" has to be one of my favorite lines. This is one of those songs were you can you close your eyes and imagine the story.
My body was tingling through the entire song. Unreal
"Bald dude"
THIS!!!!
For some odd reason I think this song sounds similar to Ramblin Jack Elliot’s-Falling down blues.. is that just me?
thank you Lord, for this fine music.
Knowing songs like this are still being made gives me hope for the future.
Rick Rubin doin his thing.......
Real country music telling stories are coming back. YES
I dont care what you say colter wall really is something special amazing music
Best song I've herd in many years
First country recording I hear in decades that interest me (personally) - with a voice like this, you cannot go wrong
Chicken skinned the shit outta me..
One question. They stole his rifle and his horse. So how does he get the rifle back to shoot them?
@Ryan Pfefferkorn it says he say them, but if the soldiers stole em how did he get em back?
After he woke up from the cast iron to the brain, he tracked them down and it and when he found them he says i can see my paint, i can see my rifle, the one that shares my name, and he picks up the rifle and shoots them ol boys down. Give it another listen, and pay close attention after the cast iron to the brain parr!
@Ryan Pfefferkorn he sees it, but how did he get it from them?? They hit him with a cast iron skillet while he was camping with them, then they stole his horse and rifle
Did they leave it laying on the ground?
@S B yes more less he did the same thing he hunted them down and found them at a camp or a resting place. He likely sneaks up and grabs his rifle they prolly either left on the horse or up against a tree is the way i picture it
I wish my Dad had lived to hear this young man's uniqueness. Thanks Colter Wall.
Unique? Lol this is Johnny Cash's style through and through.
@Dave T I beg to differ. Apart from his voice there´s not much about this song that reminds me on JRC, quite franky- not even the voice really does. This laid-back, bluesy and eerie sound is quite different to the bum-chacka-bum rhythm that was way more up John´s alley. You know, that rhythm like a train kind of thing.
@El Wray exactly! And im so tired of hearing this too. The kid sings slow and deep but aside from that there is no Johnny Cash in it whatsoever. John Cash has a crisp voice and alot of this guy's words slur, plus if you listen its very easy to pick out the "yankee" in his accent "not saying its a bad thing, im just saying its there". There are really only a handfull of his songs that i actually like. I do see alot of potential but im still waiting for him to turn it loose.
@Warren Lol, this German here cannot really tell an accent from the other. However, talking potential, I think Colter has more potential in blues than in country. But that´s probably just a bit of wishfull thinking on my part. Cheers.
Best song ever
This song brings me peace of mind
masterful storytelling! Reminds me of Marty Robbins kinda. Both masterful country/western storytellers
HO-LY Shit!!
Does he do this one live?
The south shall rise again
BirthOfSerpents he’s Canadian...
@Gerrick Dastrup Canadians make the best songs about The South. I don't know why. Go listen to The Band, "The night they drove old dixie down"
The song isnt about the south...Bald Butte is in Saskatchewan...
Bo Duke, Bo Duke
If you don't like this kiss my real country ass
Holy Shit!!! thats an amazing song!! would love to hear that at the brewery sessions!
Colters steady making songs that should be turned to movies. I swear, Bald Butte, Fraulein and You look to yours would stand for great movies
Thanks a lot for this beautiful tune. One of my favourites for sure. What puzzles me, however, is one question: How can Henry grab his rifle up off the ground and shoot them ol´boys down when his rifle was stolen in the first place? I´m not a native speaker so I might have missed something...
This must have been the verse he left out to sing;) Anyway, for the sake of immersion I´ve come to think Henry just snug up on them before he showed them what´s what. And again- I´m loving the hell out of this song. Cheers
Yep he snuck up on them I guess; some were probably drunk lol. Except one might not be, or he was off pissing lol. I´m loving the hell out of this song too.
Oh boy, you should make a couple of additional verses. lol. And hell yeah, it´s "snuck" because it doesn´t derive from "to sneag" ;)
Well...sounds like he tracked them, found his rifle and took to the business at hand.
@Travis Livengood
or so he'd thought...
Oh my God this song is an eargasm. Pure, real country. No beer, no girls in tight jeans in the back of the truck, no partying . . . the guitars are my favorite part.
And no goddamn claptrack. Thank jaysus modern country’s just become a shitty version of pop.
No bullshit , that's what real men like.
@Evan Weaver Fucking this, man. People are like "I like all kinds of music, except country." And I'm literally like "lol you've never heard country. Only quasi-rural pop."
Welcome to real country music buddy .....believe it or not it's everywhere
It helps that it's almost six minutes of storytelling instead of a minute intro, six shitty hooks and no substance. This guy should teach class and every "country" singer under 40 should attend.
I want to see this movie
So damn good
Bald Butte, Bald Butte, so lofty and so high; carry me to Bald Butte, where the plains wrap 'round the sky- you can dig a hole on Bald Butte when I die.
God I was born in the wrong time my soul belongs in the plains where the cowboys roamed
300Romans x cowboys still roam
Walk into town just to die for the endless time after wanting only company
Nothing like illness, bandits and the harsh geography of the west to make you appreciate life
@Dylan Barnhart in town it was actually fairly calm. Outside the towns was a different story.
300Romans x Same here brother. No pussies in those days
Took a cast iron to his brain
If you liked this look up the ballad of Claude Dallas by Tom Russell, another great western murder ballad
Incredible song,
"rifle that shared his name"
"seen the man that done me wrong, lord i'm goina do them just the same"
It's the story of the Henry U.S. rifle.
@Panama Kyd Have you heard his song Henry and Sam? It's on the Cowboy Poetry vid on yt. Very cool jam.
I have not but when I'm tired and it's time to settle down from a long day of walking down the highway, it's a great song to drink to!
hell yea finally found some new old school..ill be promoting the hell out of Colter here in Nevada for sure..
Best I have heard I love it make more
This song is about Montana:)
Alberta
Montana, Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C.
This guys gonna blow up bigtime
This is amazing. It's like a modern Red Headed Stranger.
Colter Wall one of my all time favorites
I don't know about y'all but this makes me want to go back in time and rob trains and live in the canyons. Who's with me?
I'm your huckleberry
jonaverette I’ll ride shotgun!
Honestly its bot as east ad it seems i live in a railroad town that was bultbin the 1800s and basically started the modoc war. Alot of the guys who robbed around here never made it out of California.
I'm your huckleberry 🤠
Let's do it
Love Colter wall I'm trying to put him on in Washington
This may be one of the best written story songs in country music ever.
J Barksdale its more blues than country.
It has a mix of country, blues, and folk. I don't like country, blues is ok, and I love folk. He knows how to mix everything just right. Colter Wall is definitely a musical genius.
Also, the amount of US and Canadian history from that era mixed into this song is amazing...
J Barksdale If you like this, check out Marty Robbins. Although if you like this guy, I'm guessing that you have heard of Marty.
My music taste is basically the more between country, blues and folk something is the more I'll like it. And I'm sure if you like this there's lots of country music you'd like if you look for it
@Sarah Louise Woodstock have you tried to tell Mr wall your theary?usually western as fuck would likely be a country boy,and the blues bros are nowere near this, dont get me wrong blues bros are all good ,if this is blues then I've definitely missed something lol
Colter what a awesome song! Keep all your good work up, love all your music!
I will deff be coming to see you colter! Best sound I've heard in a long time
I've been listening to you Colter ever since your first song, you're "The man" keep them coming my friend, I love them all, well happy trails Colter Wall.
I was already impressed by the man but then I hear this!!! WOW.....I'll be investing in a vinyl tomorrow ;) Thanks for the upload!!
this is my favorite song of his
Couldn't agree more!
It ties for first with 13 silver dollars in my book lol
This is one of the best country songs I've heard in a very long time. I can't believe this video has less than 2 thousand views.
You are correct on that
