My bad for not knowing when this project came out but I know it was around 09 maybe 08 either way there was a chunk of time in hip hop that started with Kanye's graduation where hip hop really changed. The lyrics were relatable to normal people and really expressed normal people's struggles while at the same time the music sonically sounded brighter and ascetically looked brighter but there were real and deep lyrics but in the most relatable ways. With this in mind go back and listen to graduation by Kanye, man on the moon 1 by kid cudi, and this project right here. Good couple of years of hip hop imo.
You are right, this is a very unpopular and not talked about phase of music, but it's personally my favorite phase of Rap. Graduation was my favorite Kanye album, and on a good day it is, that album alone got me into hip hop. this song was the first Wale song i found, and people say this is his most underrated project and i have to agree tbh
