Waits, Tom - Train Song Lyrics

Well I broke down in E. St. Louis
On the Kansas City line
and I drunk up all my money
that I borrowed every time
and I fell down at the derby
and now the night's black as a crow
It was a train that took me away from here
but a train can't bring me home
What made my dreams so hollow
was standing at the depot
with a steeple full of swallows
that could never ring the bell
and I come ten thousand miles away
with not one thing to show
well it was a train that took me away from here
but a train can't bring me home
I remember when I left
without bothering to pack
you know I up and left with
just the clothes I had on my back
now I'm sorry for what I've done
and I'm out here on my own
well it was a train that took me away from
here but a train can't bring me home

  3. E.... A....

    There you are Mr Pocket

  4. D.... M....

As a train rumbles past the open window a tired leaf
blows in through forever carrying a photograph of you that gleams like the
teeth of the wolf under the full moon.

  5. S.... D....

    Happy 69th Birthday, Tomcat!

Crap! He did it so much better than this! Junk version!

  10. j.... ....

Loved this song for years. "I'm so sorry for what I've done, And I'm out here on my own..."

  11. A.... G....

I used to think he said "It was a Dream that took me away from here, but a Dream can bring me home".

    A.... G....

    Kind of works as well

  12. J.... B....

The world's saddest song. And one of it's best.

    J.... B....

"Pony" from Mule Variations is even sadder.

Oh my, this yanks at my heart.

  15. J.... G....

He sounds like Bruce Springsteen down on his luck, for good.

    J.... G....

bruce springsteen couldn't wipe tom waits ass if he won the god damned lottery

    J.... G....

    @Ann Hawley I couldn't say it better!

    J.... G....

Springsteen, like Joel and Stewart, essentially made a career out of making TW music poppy.

  16. n.... m....

sorrow and pain addiction and the loss of hope no dignaty no life thank you mr waites i came to terms with my pain

  17. F.... ....

I swear Waits was a hundred years old the day he was born.

  18. T.... S....

If you can't feel this, you can't feel.

  19. D.... W....

Listening to this song as I was in the rail yard in St. Louis waiting for the City of New Orleans to take me back to Chicago after a weekend with a beautiful young lady who likely saved me from myself was surreal... and beautiful.

Maybe someday you will understand Tom Waits, and when/if you eventually "get it", it will hit you like 100 tons of bricks!

  24. A.... L....

He is a true Renaissance man.

  25. B.... S....

    Hell, yeah.

Forgive me people, I'm doing a sentimental Tom Waits evening.....

    Thank-you YouTube, thank-you uploader.

And, of course, thank you Tom fuckin' Waits!

  31. S.... M....

I love this man with all my heart, but this one song makes me think of The Muppets.

  32. S.... V....

I'm sorry...but this makes me laugh. hahahaha.
But the Fray sent me here...they said they did an amazing cover. & In fact it should be the original.

  33. L.... ....

Leon Thomas sent me here! Oh who am I kidding, no one knows this guy...

    L.... ....

That's cuz ya forgot the Jr, and the Est Louis reference.

  34. J.... ....

I love this song. In fact, it's my all time favorite song. I've listened to it hundreds of times. I actually uploaded the live video version of this song from Big Time to youtube so everyone could actually see it performed. I prefer this studio version a lot more though. So much heart, so much genius. Why can't all music be like this?

    J.... ....

A thought; today music must be auto-tuned, and performers blow dried and painted! What's missing is the soul!

  35. m.... ....

"what is "THIS truth?" I love this tune. I remember buying the record, F's Wild Years! Still cherish it! I'm in a play about viet nam vets who ride the rails, we'll use this tune as part of our preshow music. Thanks for posting? Time waits for No one but Tom Waits for Everyone!

  36. t.... ....

tom waits broke protocol and wrote this song; train hoppers are NEVER supposed to tell of THIS truth. they'll pull my card for this post...

  37. M.... ....

i want to be Tom Waits. that is all

  38. A.... W....

when i saw that he said, 'bye bye fellas' in the voice bubble at the end, first i laughed a little. then i got really sad and thought, 'wait tom! don't GO!'

  39. 3.... ....

    Profound...

  40. s.... ....

Simply gorgeous. I had this album but lost it. Must buy again.

  41. r.... ....

What a beautiful song! Thanks for posting

  42. M.... ....
