Waits, Tom - Poncho's Lament Lyrics

Well the stairs sound so lonely without you
And I ain't maid my bed in a week
Coffee stains on the paper I'm writing
And I'm too choked up inside to speak
And Yes, I know our differences pulled us apart
Never spoke a word heart to heart
And I'm glad that you're gone
But I wish to the lord that you'd come home
And I'm glad that you're gone
Got the feeling so strong
And I'm glad that you're gone
But I wish to the lord that you'd come home
Well my guitar still plays your favorite song
though the strings have been outta tune for some time
Every time I strum a cord, I pray out to the lord
That you'll quit your honkey-tonkin' sing my song
And I'm glad that you're gone
Got the feeling so strong
And I'm glad that you're gone
But I wish to the lord that you'd come home
So I'll throw another log onto the fire
And I'll admit I'm a lousy liar
As the coals die down and flicker
I hear that guitar picker
Play the song we used to sing so long ago
I'm glad that you're gone
Got the feeling so strong
And I'm glad that you're gone
But I wish to the lord that you'd come home
And I'm glad, damn glad you're gone
Got the feeling so strong
And I'm glad that you're gone
But I wish to the lord that you'd come home

What is the meaning of this phrase?:
But I wish to the lord that you'd come home

    L.... O....

No me den bola, ya entendí.

    L.... O....

He's praying that she'll come home, since they aren't together anymore and he misses her.

    L.... O....

you can't live with that woman, but you also can't live without her.

    L.... O....

"Wish to the lord" implies a prayer to God. He prays to God that his lover will return.

how often is it that one hears a song that brings out the complexity of a love-gone-wrong

  10. H.... M....

Mixed feelings here. I resent the Early Years albums because I know Tom never wanted that material released but I just can't help loving the majority of the songs on those albums anyway.

  11. F.... M....

great song haven't heard songs from this album in a long time

  12. B.... ....

    Suchhh*

  13. B.... ....

@mdhattem Just got it on vinyl from amazon... So an amazing experience.

  14. M.... H....

His whole catalogue is artistically sophisticated but this volume of The Early Years is the most moving experience I've ever had listening to ta Tom Waits record.

  15. G.... M....

And I'm glad that you're gone love it

  16. r.... ....

I was singing this song and playing my guitar and my wife thought I wrote this song.

I looked at her like she was on crack, I wish I had written this song. Tom is a genius, the most under-appreciated musician/songwriter of the last 40 years.

  17. d.... ....

    Love it.
