Waits, Tom - How's It Gonna End Lyrics
He had 3 whole dollars
A worn out car
And a wife who was
LEaving for good
LIfe's made of trouble
She wrote good bye in
The dust on the hood
THey found a a map of Missouri
Lipstick on the glass
They must of left
In the middle of the nite
And I want to know
The same thing
Everyone wants to know
Behind a smoke colored
Curtain, the girl
Disappeared, the found out
The ring was a fake
A tree born crooked
Will never grow straight
She sunk like a hammer in to the lake
A long lost letter and
And old leaky boat
Promises are never meant
To keep
And I want to know
The same thing
Everyone wants to know
How it going to end?
The barn leaned over
The vultures dried their wings
The moon climbed up an empty sky
The sun sank down behind the tree
On the hill
There's a killer and he's coming
Thru the rye
But maybe he's the Father
Of that lost little girl
It's hard to tell in this light
And I want to know
The same thing
Everyone wants to know
How it going to end?
Drag your wagon and your plow
Over the bones of the dead
Out among the roses and the weeds
You can never go back
And the answer is no
And wishing for it only
Makes it bleed
Joel Tornabene was broken
On the wheel
Shane and Bum Mahoney on the lamb
The grain was as gold
As Sheila's hair
All the way from Liverpool
With all we could steal
He was robbed of twenty dollars
His body found stripped
Cast into the harbour
There and drowned
And I want to know
The same thing
Everyone wants to know
How it going to end?
THe sirens are snaking their
Way up the hill
It's last call somewhere in
The wordl
The reptiles blend in with the
Color of the street
Life is sweet at the edge
Of a razor
And down in the front row of
An old picture show
The old man is asleep
As the credits start to roll
And I want to know
The same thing
Everyone wants to know
How it going to end?

Rumor has it, you can skip the entire tanning process by playing this song to the hides. They turn to leather in 5:12 flat.
To anyone curious about interpretation; I posted this is a reply in another thread but I think it deserves to seen for anyone who'd like to:
I'm really surprised that no one has made the connection that him saying that he and everyone else wants to know the same thing; "how's it going to end?" along with the image of an old man asleep in the theater while the credits start to roll...
Is essentially a metaphor for how we are all curious on how we ourselves are going to end/die/pass away and since we have no way of knowing we satisfy that desire with morbid curiosity towards others. The violent/unfortunate/tragic endings and stories he tells are the ones that tend to catch our/public - attention the most, yet many of us - if we are lucky (or simply at that point detached) will be like the old man - asleep (literally or figuratively) when our credits start to roll.
also the tale of the man who was killed for the meager amount of money in his pocket demonstrates how little value his story and thereby life I had not only to the thief, but also to the storyteller and listener because we are more caught up with the imagery of death and the descent of his body than wondering who he was or anything else about him before that event took place...
Once again reiterating our morbid fascination with death especially that of others - since our own is inconceivable by us.
"What is the greatest miracle in the universe?"
"That man despite all evidence to the contrary believes wholeheartedly he will live forever although he knows he will not."
I understand your thinking.. I want it to end while i'm on the vinegar stroke.. people say that's is how Genhgis Kahn went.. end that way is cool for me,,happy and excersising
Jonathan Bennetts On a similar note - although perhaps slightly off topic to your reply -
Regarding my reference to the nameless man killed for the coins in his pocket and how we, the listeners, are more enthralled with the imagery of his body's descent into the bottom of the lake than *him* or who he was -
You may find this comparison/contrast interesting:
The *Original* Twin Peaks (the pilot, and season 2 up until the killer was revealed) was David Lynch's "antidote" to prevalent and incredibly popular "murder of the week" series;
When the victim was less important to the viewer than the "whodunnit" - how a windowless room had the door locked from the inside when the *body* was found. (Such as Matlock, Dragnet, Perry Mason, ect...) - Even the "friends and family" interviewed showed very little emotion when discovering/discussing the death of their neighbor/daughter/spouse/classmate...
So David Lynch got together with Mark Frost and decided to start a show where *they* didn't even know who perpetrator was when they wrote, pitched, and filmed the pilot/first season - it was about *the victim* (Laura Palmer).
To quote the FBI investigator when speaking to the specialty coroner, "Murder is not a faceless event here. It is not a statistic to be tallied up at the end of the day. Laura Palmer’s death has affected each and every man, woman and child because life has meaning here, every life."
Ironically despite the fact that the first season was only a test run of 8 episodes (including the pilot), even bigger than the question of "Who shot JR?"
Was - "Who murdered Laura Palmer?" and "Why?"
Ironically when pressure from the fans (and the execs) caused the network to force David Lynch and Mark Frost to solve the mystery/answer the question that they never truly intended to be answered - *that* killed the show...
So as much as "we all want to know the same thing"
We don't really want to know how it's going to end... it spoils the experience.
Late summer, Midnight on train station on the outskirts of Riga. This song in the headphones....
Magnificent.
I want to listen to the same thing,
How is this go to end
ive never heard the buzzing static in the back before. what is that. sounds like an amp, but there are no electric instruments in this song. how curious. on "real gone" tom sings through a cabinet, that could be it
Just what I was thinking.
Sahar and Madison Beer brought me here
Sahar brought me 😚

LEaving
Tom Waits is my hero
I am there, Tom.
Life is sweet at the edge of a razor... Chills
Tom is the only fucker that can write beautiful melodies to terrible troubles....
This song has more riches in it than many novels combined.
SETH RICH
Hopefully with her as my wife :)
"Drag your wagon and your plow over the bones of the dead", I think one of William Blake's Proverbs of hell goes something similar to this

Tom Waits. Call me weird, but I can't tell if he'd make a better husband or a better grandpa. ;P
MysticKoolaid808 I'd marry him if he'd take me
this and road to peace are songs i cant seem to get waits fans to appreciate, their loss, daily play in my house.........
that hardly makes sense to me as this songs one of my favorites of his and is also a daily play.

Guys, seriously, vote this comment up!
This saves a lot of people a lot of time.
Thank you by the way.
All his songs are this poetic. Bet.
But it's only this song and Walk Away that paint the same cyclical structure.
On the lam.
Not lamb. Look it up, you'll see this correct.
Purely a grammatical fix.
Thank you for posting the lyrics.
Is it weird that I find his voice relaxing in this song?
No, unless I'm crazy, too :)
@Bruce Rodgers Nothin' wrong with being crazy. :D
No it isn't
same here, there:s often a person or more visitors they respond on a whole other way tellin me "this is depressing muzic" but i get depressed hearing a whole other style of muzic ,listening to Pharrel Williams or Justin Bieber is ok but i heard it all before ,but there still noone who'se style is so like a outbranched tree :there's always a song with a sudden feel that always hit the spot.(but now i know that we're no minority but a legion "raindogs".)
i want his voice to rape my innards like a grapefruit spoon digging into some grapefruit. yeah!
Tom. I love you (your music) as a brother. But this is something I can't stand.... Are you alive?
+jarek skwarek are you death
i like Tom's music more than anything else, maybee iregret it later but this is just "bullshit" ,and more tracks trough another ,no sir this is Tom's joke, and to many boose (yes i love that too) will not turn this into a GEM .But it's fun.
My brother said the same thing when I proudly played this. It's his voice and lyrics which make it coooollll.....
yes i was waisted as a skunk ,i like this song very much the rest of the story is bull, xcecuse me for consuming above my level.
frans venrooy
Art is subjective, my venerable fellow Waits fan. I personally think "Rain Dogs" was, arguably, his masterpiece but THIS album has some gems, this among them imso. This one has GREAT lyrics, as good as any Dylan blues song, and his voice never sounded better imso.
frans venrooy
Ahhhh, Frans, not to worry, my good man. I just saw your post AFTER posting mine. Good to know that you indeed do like this one. Sounds like Tom likes it, too, cuz the words are fckn great and his voice - well it is classic Waits, isn't it?
Haha that's strange I'm thinking this is the song to fully enjoy when you're really, really drunk, mind you I'm not drunk, hate being drunk and love this song but it really feels like a lonely drinking song.
Feels like the downright invasiveness of human curiosity. Despite the ugliness of what the the observed is going through, it's like we are watching maniacally for our own satisfaction.
+HowlOfMinerva just me analyzing the lyrics I guess. Like he's telling us a few stories of other people's sorrows or misfortune and we just wanna know what happens, how's it gonna end. We watch because we like when things end messy. Not because we seek resolution, if that makes sense. We just like watching conflict for entertainment.
Tom Waits must have smoked more than Keith Richards. But he sounds amazing.
he channels satan through his esophagus. praise beelzebub!
This is a great tune, if you don't like Tom Waits what the F are you doing here commenting, and Maleshk, obviously you are a transgender twit, you think you are a special little snowflake and you aren't. fuck you too and oh BTW honey, learn how to spell if you are going to comment on shit.
That was an odd thing to say.
+Joseph Stalin What makes you say that, Stalin? maybe if you had read maleshk's comment you would understand.
Deborah Wiggins now now, let's not go full gamergate
I never heard sing like this, feeling gloomy, surrealistic
Agree completely unique and very emotional voice.
LOVE TO US ALL
Why kiss refles?
promises i never ment to keep
Kory Bratlie promises are* never ment to keep
studentofsweetsci - Not surprised that you like Waits. Tremendous talent.
One of his best songs - extremely underrated. His voice is the dominant and dramatic element, weaving various vignettes of life into surrealistic mosaics comprised of dysfunction, grief, abandonment, revenge, and, ultimately, the inexplicable question results..."I wanna know the same thing - everybody wants to know -how's it gonna end"? Who really knows? No one does, really.....

You "read" like a lowbrow GEDer on an uneventful one way trip to Mediocrity, USA.

excellent summary. You nailed it.

Just realized this song was narrating someone's experience watching a film.
Pope Benedict II lol what does Radiohead have to do with anything
@Pope Benedict II hah, oh, because they have song titles like "motionpicture soundtrack" & "exit music (for a film)" i guess??..
Hello all. Perhaps this message will never reach You. It is the same man who wondered with the Pope about Radiohead in this song. To be honest it's a special moment for my sirens snaking vertically like Tom is singing, a poem about wood. Also I was just being foolish about the visual art, my experience of Radiohead back in 2000 was a total mindfuck about that red rectangle.
@idontimagineyouandi @ineverhadtheirbloodyhammer
I think it's about marriage.
.... another great-great song of him !
Thanks a LOT for posting .
sank like a hammer into the lake ,Genius
Mostly I love this song not because it's Tom Waits (EEEEEEE) but because it reminds me of a very specific situation and feeling I experienced. I like songs I can connect to.
yeah i agree with tedyesca, you pretty much suuuuuuuck
Yeah, probably.
It's hard to enjoy the static rhythm, it's too repetetive for me - it doesn't go anywhere. Don't be defensive ;) Nobody has to enjoy every Tom Waits song.
I relax to Heart Of Saturday Night and Georgia Lee, btw.
Anti1989Creative p u u . 🛌🏻 y
so edgy. how is this song boring?. its a mellow song. you listen to the lyrics, enjoy the rhythm. maybe you just cant relax and enjoy a song?
I think most of Tom's fans agree with you, since her comment was flagged, while Miran's original comment remains untouched. Lol.
Miran's right, it's a boring song yet I love Tom Waits.
By your logic Tom Waits' music is shitty. Whhhaaaat?
wasn't in the mood for it when I wrote the comment.
Great song.So many stories, how does it end?
I wrote this just to see the reactions.
5 years later and the only reaction was me promoting my account. Please click me
this song is inspired by the original piece from django reinhardt's "Tears" i believe!
Another Tom's miracle!
And how do you know that? Just becouse I don't like the song you do doesn't mean i like shity music.
you must like shit music.
what a boring song
we must not be afraid to embrace this question and make the best!
only 30k views maybe best we keep it that way
tom your the best
Once again, Tom has kept me up past my bedtime, because I can't stop listening to him. Dammit. So worth it, though.
like my ex wife.
he sounds like he smoked 10.000 unfiltered cigarettes...so beautiful &so unique!
Tom doesn't create the earth in 7 days. Tom Waits.
reptiles blendin with the colour of the streets...
Stick this into a really sad scene in a movie, and it becomes a bittersweet instead. :)
Wonderful !!!
No matter what he's singing, Tom never fails to make me smile...
You've made me proud.
like your work tom, youre a one off " genius "
@fattymcgee94 you're comment should have 100 likes by now!
