Waits, Tom - Come On Up To The House Lyrics
Well the moon is broken
And the sky is cracked
Come on up to the house
The only things that you can see
Is all that you lack
All your cryin don't do no good
Come on up to the house
Come down off the cross
We can use the wood
Come on up to the house
Come on up to the house
Come on up to the house
The world is not my home
Come on up to the house
There's no light in the tunnel
No irons in the fire
Come on up to the house
And your singin lead soprano
In a junkman's choir
You gotta come on up to the house
Does life seem nasty, brutish and short
Come on up to the house
The seas are stormy
And you can't find no port
Come on up to the house
There's nothin in the world
[Chorus]
There's nothin in the world
that you can do
you gotta come on up to the house
and you been whipped by the forces
that are inside you
come on up to the house
well you're high on top
of your mountain of woe
come on up to the house
well you know you should surrender
but you can't let go
you gotta come on up to the house
[Chorus]

"Come down from the cross, we could use the wood..."
If all of His lyrics were to be published in book form; in limited edition leather bound tomes : They would fill the shelves of public libraries ; studied by English literary majors across the land ... and The Coveted Pulitzer Prize would be Mr Waits overburdened ash tray ... The Greatest American Song Writer is alive and well ... My ears and My heart know this ... they have felt this truth .
Just played this for my son; he said Tom sounds like a cross between Bill Cosby and a wood chipper.
fucking LOL at the end that wail, it is Cosby!
Man his voice is shit but this is a damn good song
So THAT's what he's building in there.
Love. Your. Songs
I grew up in Sonoma county and I've noticed Tom waits sings about local places that I've been to. Anyways I have a feeling that this song is about Walden House the rehab in San Francisco. Does anybody agree?
Happy 70th, Mr. Waits!
Love it that voice
I've never met Tom Waits, but I feel deeply understood by him and his gravely voice repairs something in my heart and soul whenever I listen to him. He's truly one of a kind.
The real musical genius of our time , mu .
Theo RIP
I suddenly have a desire to grab a burger from The Spotted Pig, a 40, take my heels off and enjoy my feast on a dirty sidewalk overlooking the water.
Oh man what a fucking tragedy of day i had today. What a disgrace of life i have, this just adds a strange flavor to the awful circumstancies i’m in right now to be honest
Jon Bois and Mark Sanchez
America has produced little but barbarians, warmongers, retards, perverts and cowards.
But it HAS produced Tom Waits.
That might just redeem it, I'm not sure though.
God bless Tom Waits.
Well, the moon is broken, and the sky is cracked.
Come on up to the house.
The only things that you can see is all that you lack.
Come on up to the house.
All your cryin' don't do no good.
Come on up to the house.
Come down off the cross, we can use the wood.
You gotta come on up to the house.
Come on up to the house.
Come on up to the house.
The world is not my home, I'm just a passin' through.
You got to come on up to the house.
There's no light in the tunnel, no irons in the fire.
Come on up to the house.
And your singin' lead soprano in a junkman's choir.
You got to come on up to the house.
Doesn't life seem nasty, brutish, and short.
Come on up to the house.
The seas are stormy, and you can't find no port.
Gotta come on up to the house, yeah.
You gotta come on up to the house.
Come on up to the house.
The world is not my home, I'm just a passin' through.
You got to come on up to the house, yeah.
You gotta come on up to the house.
Come on up to the house.
The world is not my home, I'm just a passin' through.
You got to come on up to the house.
There's nothin' in the world that you can do.
You gotta come on up to the house.
And you've been whipped by the forces that are inside you.
Gotta come on up to the house.
Well, you're high on top of your mountain of woe.
Gotta come on up to the house.
Well, you know you should surrender, but you can't let it go.
You gotta come on up to the house.
Gotta come on up to the house.
Gotta come on up to the house.
The world is not my home, I'm just a passin' through.
You gotta come on up to the house.
Gotta come on up to the house.
You gotta come on up to the house.
(Oh yeah!)
This is a gospel song. Tom Waits is Christian I'm almost certain.
My kids aren't even two yet but I already picture singing them this song when they're in their 20s needing daddies advice 🥰🤗
The 84 people that disliked this need help. Dispatch, my warriors.
85 people never went up to the house
The idea of this song being played at my funeral makes death seem attractive...
Piper chapman brought me here
anybody here from orange is the new black ?
What a hell of a songwriter. "The only things that you can see is all that you lack". I love every damn this man has done, from Closing Time to Bad As Me, and The Black Rider, Alice, Bone Machine. Effing genius lyrics.
How... Did 35 years of my life pass... before I had the pleasure of experiencing this wonderful song???
December '73.
I was in recovery.
Sympathizers shared with me.
One introduced me to "The Dark Side of The Moon."
Another cool, quiet Veteran from Pacific Grove,
was kind enough to allow me to discover Mr. Waits.
"Mule Variations" has always been a "Go To" for relapse recoveries.
He's not a bit pretty, but God, he's lovely - and a consummate artist.
Holy. Fucking. Shit. My soul is rocked. In the best way possible. Too bad my generation can’t make music like this.
Passing through, that inspires me so much . Our time down here pales in comparison to the glory I shall see because god is pleased with me.
"Come on down from the Cross / We can use the wood." What an unbelievable lyric...genius!!
OITNB brought me here
What a Song 😍
For me it started with an old vinyl from the library of Rain Dogs. 25 years later and I'm still listening, floored by how much can be accomplished with everyday language. Other musicians come and go, but I'll always return to this man's work.
I am 16 and i love this music
I wish piper could’ve have seen alex while in queens on furlough 😫
'Come down off your cross , we could use the wood ' Hah !
What a voice. Unbelievable.
Thank table top Joe,. I sing this when I m drinking so good 😀
I'm here because Tom Waits
I THINK WHEN YOU SEND AN INVITATION....
YOU NEED TO CALL OR SEND A CARD... OR BE NEAR BEEP YOUR HORN
AND SAY COME ON UP TO THE HOUSE. LOL
78 people couldn't find the house...
The world is not my home, i´m only passing trough ....
Desperate cry of an endless hope in a demiurgic world. Gnosticism. Read K. Dick. Let us pray.
Through the whole of my fuckin´life, he´s always there!
The one, the only...
The house means the church, but that don't mean tom believes!!! He too smart
This song brings me comfort.. Thank you mr. Waits
who else come after watching orange is the new black
This vocie is amazing
Sarah jraoze got me here
I cry everytime 😥
Tom told me to go on back to the shed
Its actually his wife that writes most of the lyrics afaik.
Within the first 16 seconds I fell in love with this song. This is just what I needed.
Here because I just wached Buster Scruggs twice✋
It all fits
A Brilliant spng. one of the best.
God, I love this song but I still think Tom needs to take a few throat lozenges. After all, there's nothing in the world that you can't do.
Came from orange is the new black
Season 2

As Moby said on MTV's Senior Moby's House of music Tom Waits is one of the most under rated singer/songwriter of our time.
So much wisdom in this song. I used to listen to it when I was going through tough times. I cried like an old turtle while listening to it but afterwards I felt calm knowing that nothing is lost forever and life goes on.
That-that voice, it's so, unique, it's almost gruesome. It's so, great
My brother just died. He turned me on to Tom. Rest In Peace Hippie. Great song
This song has comforted me in many of my darkest hours
ГЛАЗОЕДЫ!
The house is divine enlightenment.
Orange is the new black brought me here, and to all those people saying I’m disrespecting him by watching oitnb and finding this. Go fuck your self.
I'm 14 and every year my family goes on long drives across the prairies to visit our family's farms and when I'm there I feel so happy and blessed to be away from the city and only listen to music from artists like Tom Waits and lots of other amazing people like him.
Somehow Leviathan brought me here.
Awesome! Louis Armstrong all over again!
Seems like most of y'all don't realize that the lyrics are straight gospel.
@ThingsnStuff there's nothing wrong with believing in anything if you use common sense.
@Wheat Loaf my common sense leads me to Jesus. I've been a lifelong Christian and was a risk taker in my early 20s. I could've ended up in jail with a federal felony among other things. Why are atheists/agnostic so condescending. Like you know what's up there. I don't think Tom Waits, who writes alot of Christian themed music would agree with you Mr common sense
@ThingsnStuff it's your choice and if it makes you happy go with it. I just dislike the"my religion is the best for all and everyone has to follow it" - a trait I see in many Christians.
I've seen many good people and they weren't good because they worshipped someone / something or nothing at all They were good because they had heart.
On the other hand, I've seen many Christians who were worse, more self-centered and more arrogant than most atheists I've ever known.
Religion doesn't make you a better person.
@Wheat Loaf Christians are supposed to be loving and kind and be of service to fellow humans. Christians aren't perfect no man is. Chalking that up to Christians are bad is what I'm talking about with atheists. They're so pompous and it's stupid. I wouldn't let shitty people cheat me out of my faith. There's terrible Christians. But there's very great ones too. Lincoln is a great example. Many many Christians don't live and love like their supposed to and that's their problem
Yes we do.
That is bad, muted. harmonica,, anybody know who? BTW I plau roo!
Orange is the new black 😌
Praise the Lord.
Orange Is The New Black aside(Thanks for turnin' folks on)...Tom the extraordinary Waits..."You know you can surrender but you can't let go."
What an unbelievable voice, and such powerful lyrics. I LOVE this song!!!
No matter how people got to know this song, or Tom Waits, as long as they enjoy and appreciate him, it’s all good.
I'm 62 years old, and to me Tom Waits has been an inspiring genius since I was 20. A national treasure.
i’m a 62 year old man
I'm a 62 year old man as well we should go for a walk
Henry Auvil I’m 47 and Tom Waits is the voice of my soul since I first heard him.
i’m 62 years old and i knew that Tom Waits was a lyrical genius from when i first heard him in 1951. INSPIRATION!
I was driving the cab he was delivered in and when I first heard his fetal farts blasting through his mum's snatch like a Peruvian marching band in a lobster tank, I said son "I know you can't speak, I know you can't sign, so cry right here on the dotted line". I knew my cab would never smell the same again..
How can anyone break up , get fired , or get kicked out the house when this song is on . It reminds Us that We are lost and damaged and angry for valid and invalid reasons ... and that one day Were all going to leave the site of The Crucifixion ; and go up to that Big Beautiful home that the carpenters ' kid made with all that wood ... and what are We going to have in Our bag when We finally meet Him and His real
Old Man , The One that Never came around and No one knew much about , but damned if He didn't always take care of the lad ; paid His child support on time ... what account will We have to give The Father , The Son , and The Holiest Ghost with The Most , that will also be looking at Us from some attic window ... when We finally come on Up to the house.
Tom Waits brought me here
40 oz of Furlough brought me here! I knew it was Waits when I heard it.
Gospel....like no other....
Iron weed
Come on up to Toms house.
This world is not my own I’m just passin thru. You gotta come on up to the house
This song is beautiful. Put it on my phone travelling through Ireland :)
cuando me he sentido solo, cuándo he tenido miedo, cuando he viajado solo, cuando he dejado atrás algo o alguien a quien amaba... siempre ha estado esta canción! <3
“I’ve been whipped by the forces that are inside me...”- and that’s been worrying me for a while.
I don’t know many artists that have the body of work of Tom Waits. Classics by the dozens and this is one of them. Some people say he can’t sing. They confuse having an agreable voice with good singing. Tom is always on key and he gets the message across. And then there is the immense quality of lyrics and musicality of the songs.
Friend told me of this guy and said this is his favourite song, never heard of this artist so i didnt know what to expect. im surprised when i heard his voice. pretty unique
I think its about dying and going to heaven. I dont believe in a god, but things like this song make me want to.
I think it means let go of your frustrations, smoke a little weed, take a break.
actually, he is talking about going to place where people get sober.
This song along with Funkadelic's mantra of "Free your mind and your ass will follow, the Kingdom of Heaven is within.", are words to live by. I feel lighter after listening to this.
Love, love, love
when you get drunk and you have to walk home
waits is a top 5 artist of mine and Orange ITNB still brought me here
Great tune
One of my favorite Tom Waits songs. If you ever get a chance to see him live, do it. He's a showman, par excellence. Just spectacular.
I dont know why people are upset that OITNB brought them here. WHO CARES how you got here as long as you got here. Some of the best songs i discovered in my life have been from TV shows or movies and Im glad I got to discover them. So songs came out way before i was even born and it was only by Tv or movies that I was able to find them. Cant we all just enjoy some great music?
