Waits, Tom - Cold Water Lyrics
Well I woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold water
Woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold
Police at the station
And they don't look friendly
Well they don't look friendly
Well they don't look friendly
Police at the station
And they don't look friendly
They don't look friendly well
Blind or crippled
Sharp or dull
I'm reading the Bible
By a 40 watt bulb
What price freedom
Dirt is my rug
Well I sleep like a baby
With the snakes and the bugs
Well the stores are open
But I ain't got no money
I ain't got no money
Stores are open but I
Ain't got no money
Ain't got no money
Well I ain't
Found an old dog
And he seems to like me
Seems to like me
Well he seems to like me
Found an old dog and he
Seems to like me
Seems to like me
Well he seems
Seen them fellows
with the card board signs
Scrapin up a little $
To buy a bottle of wine
Pregnant women and
The Vietnam vets I say
Beggin on the freeway
Bout as hard as it gets
Well I slept in the graveyard
It was cool and still
Cool and still
It was cool and still
Slept in the graveyard
It was cool and still
Cool and still and it
Was cool
Slept all night in the Cedar grove
I was born to ramble
Born to rove
Some men are searchin for the
Holy Grail
But there ain't nothin sweeter
Than ridin the rails
I look 47 but I'm 24
Well they shooed me away
From here the time before
Turned their backs
And they locked their doors
I'm watching T.V. in
The window of a furniture store
Well I woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold water
Woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold

Waits, Tom Cold Water Comments
He needs just a little bit more cowbell
HE IS TIMELESS!!
I once woked up in a cell at the police station. The light turned on right in my face, hangover as hell. But the police was quite nice people. Got a fine for not leaving the area as I was told to by the police. Guess Waits has done something similair.
ran outta hot woda...
(bburrr)
The King.
This is what a hangover sounds like.
bin durch "Gunter Flickenschild"auf den Song gekommen
The safest place to sleep in the streets of new Orleans is a cemetery, fyi if you ever find your self in that sitch. Cool song
This guy's shtick is something else. Born and raised middle class in southern Cali, never struggled all that much, now a true one-percenter worth millions, writes songs about being a hobo and people take it seriously.
Listened to this in Baghdad 2003, everyday, seemed appropriate, dunno why
I love this shit more than crystal palace
Living on the street ain’t glorious by no means ; but it gives You a keen appreciation for all of life’s little luxuries ... this song helps Me celebrate those things
A national treasure, a songwriter's songwriter and a musician's musician.
How has nobody thought of doing the west coast swing to this!!?
what kind of swing is that?
Guy's a genius.
"I'm watchin' TV in the window of a furniture store"; if you're over 45, like yours truly, then this lyric says more in 15 syllables than I could ever express in a whole page of rambling reminiscing about walking dejectedly around your home town late at night, whether broken-hearted/homeless or just plain despondent.
Some men are searching for the holy Grail
But there ain't nothin sweeter than riding the rails.
Why did the Scarecrow get me an award?
That was supposed to say, why did the Scarecrow get an award?
He was outstanding in his field
working in the rain and in all the mud in this depressing weather and this comes on the radio .. wow instant downer in a good way
Found an Old dog and he seems to like me … . Love
Never get enough of this guy.
Genius.
Man, I can feel every sound in the song, every instrument, every word. I don't know if I can smell this song, or if I smell like it. Crazy.
I'm sorry i don't fucking get how this works.
JP brought me here too.
You're all gonna be surprized to learn that JP also likes Alice's Welcome to My Nightmare album. Maybe not for road trips, but as among concept albums.
Thank You!
Such an amazing song. I think it sounds like a gospel song. He Is preaching!
when you come for tom waits but you get fucking Peterson zealots
Fucking cold nails it!
outta control hoo haa!
woke up this mornin with a koala...
Ryan Albertson kool-aid was first thing I ever heard..
Can't unhear this anymore
KOALA KILLS !!! I heard “Cold Juana “ ; envisioning some cold hearted and calloused assed Mexican prostitute with Chipotle Cock breath , growling in Spanish ( and walking Spanish) at a miserably hung over , Mr Waits... but THE KOALA takes The Klondike bar ... Leaving polar bears , Eskimos , and Mexican harlotry In it’s dust from Down Under .
I can totally envision Tom Waits waking up with a koala
Love the Chuck/Keith guitar break
Tom brought me here.
I look 47 but I'm 24, lol
This song is perfect for Kurt Cobain's voice! A post-mortem cover is in order!
Thanks Dr. Peterson!
phil cook
This is going to be on my next mixtape, "Room-cleaning rock."
You might also want to add the soundtrack from "Leaving Las Vegas". Sting does a few songs on it, including a cover of Angel Eyes. Last song is the best, "Won't be going south for a while" by the Palladinos.
Thanks Dr. J, of course a psychologist brought me here.
How so? I don't need jordan fucking peterson telling me what music I need to listen to. Tom Waits is a goddamn legend, Peterson is just a fraud
wodidos hahaha
Jordan Peterson recommendation brought me here :)
Just the right bullets
Frog synchronicities, bucko.
Tom Waits brought me here, but I'd be interested in seeing where Peterson references this song if you could be so kind as to shoot me a link
excellent
Mr. Waits is a genius. Love the insane guitar break in this song.
yes superb solo
Morning swim practice-truth. Peak of my career was seeing Waits in Madison Wisconsin1979. 47,24,57, why waits so long?
Tom Waits forever. "Cold Water" would be the peak of their career for anyone, even Dylan.

Best hobo song ever... surpasses the great "Hobos lullaby". And easily the best song on Mule Variations.
On The Nickel?
godhimself01 are there any songs on mule that aren't great?
godhimself01
what do you know about being a hobo?

Tom Waits, everbody, Tom Waits!
I hate how my friend hypes this dude up, but I have to admit that I love every song he does. I just wish my friend would shut the hell up.
Eventually he'll stfu and just listen.
yep save the good tunes for the worthy...
that awesome moment when you see that Tom Waits songs have no dislikes.
David Gevorgyan yeah, if you listen you get it. If you don’t know, well then a life half lived.
six years down the line, 39 dislikes
TOM WAITS SAY NO MORE FUCKING FANTASTIC MAN
Killer!
@Phantomsbreath Cool cool. Tom Waits is NOT Tom Waits without that wonderful, grimy sound quality, I say.
@salsburysteakjr Exactly.
@Phantomsbreath D'you mean the production sound? The slightly fuzzy and blown out way the instruments are mixed together?
God damn, this is so therapeutic.
People, this is stylistic suck. It's Supposed to sound this bad. It's on purpose. It's a damn fine blues though.
Shoot the bass player!!!!
5 thumbs up
One of Tom Wait's worst on the album. But it is still one of the best songs of all time.
