Waits, Tom - Children's Story Lyrics

Once upon a time there was a poor child,
with no father and no mother
And everything was dead
And no one was left in the whole world
Everything was dead

And the child went on search, day and night
And since nobody was left on the earth,
he wanted to go up into the heavens
And the moon was looking at him so friendly
And when he finally got to the moon,
the moon was a piece of rotten wood

And then he went to the sun
And when he got there, the sun was a wilted sunflower
And when he got to the stars, they were little golden flies.
Stuck up there, like the shrike sticks 'em on a blackthorn

And when he wanted to go back, down to earth,
the earth was an overturned piss pot
And he was all alone, and he sat down and he cried
And he is there till this day
All alone:

Okay, there's your story!
Night-night!

    "Children's Story"
Once upon a time there was a poor child,
with no father and no mother,
    And everything was dead.
And no one was left in the whole world.
    Everything was dead.

And the child went on search, day and night
And since nobody was left on the earth,
he wanted to go up into the heavens
And the moon was. looking at him so friendly.
And when he finally got to the moon,
the moon was a piece of rotten wood.

And then he went to the sun.
And when he got there, the sun was a wilted sunflower.
And when he got to the stars, they were little golden flies.
Stuck up there, like the shrike sticks 'em on a blackthorn.

And when he wanted to go back, down to earth,
the earth was an overturned piss pot.
And he was all alone, and he sat down and he cried.
And he is there till this day
    All alone:

    Okay, there's your story!
    Night-night!

What do you want to bet this was actually a story he told his kids at night?

  5. E.... W....

This was not written by Tom Waits; it's from the German play "Wozzeck," which Tom wrote songs for, those becoming in turn the album "Blood Money."  Certainly it fits his unique vision, but it's not his own dark thoughts.

    E.... W....

These words are not in Berg's opera, but in the original play by Buchner.  The songs were written for a more recent staging.

    E.... W....

'Woyzeck' is a great work, well-worth reading. It may be the 1st Expressionist play, and is one of the earliest pieces of drama to have a 'working-class' central character ...

This is a wonderful way to prepare your children for the world.
Full of disappointments, and if you strive for what you believe to be greener pastures, chances are that what you find won't find the thing to be as perfect as you thought.
    I like it.

Nothing is perfect zyldyks. Are you?
