Waits, Tom - A Sight For Sore Eyes Lyrics

hey sight for sore eyes it's a long time no see
workin hard hardly workin hey man you know me
water under the bridge didya see my new car
well it's bought and it's payed for parked outside of the bar

and hey barkeeper what's keepin you keep pourin drinks
for all these palookas hey you know what i thinks
that we toast to the old days and dimagio too
and old drysdale and mantle whitey ford and to you

no the old gang ain't around everyone has left town
'cept for thumm and giardina said they just might be down
oh half drunk all the time and i'm all drunk the rest
yea monk's till the champion but i'm the best

i guess you heard about nash he was killed in a crash
hell that must of been two or three years ago now
yea he spun out and he rolled he hit a telephone pole
and he died with the radio on
no she's married and with a kid finally split up with sid
he's up north for a nickle's worth for armed robbery

hey i'll play you some pin ball hell you ain't got a chance
well then go on over and ask her to dance

♫...half-drunk half the time and all drunk the rest.
I'd rather hear him sing not working so hard to sound that way. It's distracting and sounds phony.

37 here as well. A now dead friends dad first turned me on to Uncle Tom back in my senior year of high school. I sorta forgot about him, with everything going on back then. Years later I'm eternally grateful for Mr Waits, and his music.

when you are at the bar five drinks in and wishing that things were as fun as they used to be. The new crowd just isnt the same.

    H.... ....

Heretic or maybe you have just changed.

    H.... ....

    Nah, it's the new crowd.

  22. J.... J....

Seriously thats the worst singer ive ever heard

    J.... J....

    👍👍👍

    J.... J....

    👍👍👍

    J.... J....

You are wasting your time, Tom Waits is the best singer songwriter of our generation, it is like watching a movie listening to him, If this guy doesnt get that he is beyond our help.

    J.... J....

then you arent really listening. Now keep quiet, the rest of us are trying to enjoy it.

    J.... J....

    WELL SAID!

  23. I.... M....

i guess you heard about nash he was killed in a crash...

    I.... M....

That must have been 2 or 3 years ago now, He spun out and rolled, hit a telephone pole and he died with the radio on. Magic

  24. D.... W....

Just beautiful. Have been listening to this for over 30 years, and it still gets me every time, as does Kentucky Avenue, and quite a few of his other songs. Absolute genius !

  25. b.... ....

I fell in love with Waits after stumbling upon and seeing Street Wise when I was about 12.  I remember looking for the song from that movie in vain and then the excitement when I finally found it and downloaded it from Napster with that glorious dial up internet.  Took the entire day to download...  I felt like the coolest kid ever.  I'm almost 27 now and seeing him perform live is the first and only thing on my bucket list.

    b.... ....

    Perhaps, and perhaps not.

    b.... ....

+bananaPLEASE Hey man I feel you. I have been all me life into punk & rock & i got mr Waits thruu me friends about 10 years ago . Since then i moved to England & i saw a loot acts , rock bands & such . Biggest regret is that propably ill newer see that gentelman perform live. I would gladly skip all i saw till this day just for this one gig. And for Thomas Headley , propably there are better inspirations there, but why look futher if there is Giant like mr Waits right here :O)

    b.... ....

+Bickie Bisc Yes, Tom W. is inspirational, but ur life should hold greater aspirations (goals) than seeing a great artist live. BTW, Mr. Waits has stated that he tours out of necessity not enjoyment. Enjoy the videos of his live appearances & play his music in the presence of others to find the occasional convert.

    b.... ....

+Thomas Headley I can't speak for Bickie Bisc but I've done just about everything in life I've set out to do (the remaining few things on the list are things that I will not ever be able to achieve) so I think seeing Waits live is an acceptable thing to want over any/everything else.

    b.... ....

    +bananaPLEASE U r fortunate indeed.

  26. T.... H....

56,000 views & many have covered his material & sold millions of CDs.  Springsteen, the Eagles, Rod Stewart, & even Scarlett Johannson.  It's not all nostalgia since the subjects of his ballads are with us always.  A fan for 40 yrs.  Signing off to put on "Rain Dogs" with Blind Love & Downtown Train.

  27. S.... E....

    Great voice !!!

  28. R.... S....

    Happy new year everybody!

  29. g.... ....

this song hit me rightin the heart when i first heard it, and it still do. i can easily go to sleep with this and i can drink to this aswell!it's so beautiful and sad...

  30. I.... m....

one of the greatest tunes ever written. Waits...a real visionary to this Cuban refugee.

  31. E.... D....

Sulashua, that is correct, what you say. Thanks for saying.

  32. D.... I....

    THE GREATEST MAN ALIVE

  33. G.... F....

    Ehi Sulashua,
maybe you're drunk, but I like the way you have said this thing.

  34. B.... ....

Tom Waits is, amongst another million things, all about the glitter of the past that falls down on the gloomy present in the form of memories and stories told by once-used-to-bes and wanted-to-bes. What it comes down to, is the decadent feeling of dealing with the fact that we never became what we really wanted to be. Fuck, I'm drunk.

    B.... ....

    Thats ok

  35. b.... ....

    "Thelma"?

  36. P.... ....

The song is fantastic! If it is true that the video can be improved, do not you think? a greeting.
Martin / My other channel "Raiwons"

  37. M.... M....

Yeah, that line always gets to me too.

  38. B.... ....

@pedroeuproprio Reminds me of my buddy Mike.... Must of been 5 or 6 years ago now...

  39. g.... ....

Funny how a harsh whiskey soaked, cigarette stained voice like this can make me cry like a baby. Beautiful song, but then again, what else did you expect from Tom?

  40. P.... Q....

    fantastic...no words to be said

  41. P.... A....

The line «he died with the radio on» amazes every single time I hear the song. It sounds to me like the best compliment Nash could ever get.

  42. U.... V....

oh half drunk all the time and i'm all drunk the rest
yea monk's till the champion but i'm the best

  43. U.... V....

  45. L.... ....

so alt, so oft gehört. und ich krieg immer noch nicht genug davon! zeitlos schöne musik.

  46. W.... ....

Makes me think of sitting in an "old man" bar somewhere in NYC, doing shots with beer chasers. Listening to all the bullshit stories around you. Throwing in some of your own.

  47. t.... ....

Happy New Year Everybody!!!! oh wait...

  48. F.... J....

    A true masterpiece!

  49. b.... ....

    Finally on youtube....many thanks

  50. M.... A....

Nice poem, excellent music. While not descriptive, the words reflects the atmosphere of the town and the bar very well. Also I always laugh out loud when he says "... he's up north for a nickle's worth for armed robbery".

  51. P.... A....

I guess you were the first one to make this piece of art available on youtube. My compliments !

  52. r.... ....

This seems such a classic, nostalgic piece of Americana. Really like it. He gets it across so efficiently and beautifully. What a maestro. Ditto to 'God Bless'.
