Wainwright, Rufus - When In Disgrace With Fortune And Men's Eyes (Sonnet 29) Lyrics

When in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes
I all alone beweep my outcast state
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries
And look upon myself and curse my fate

Wishing me like to one more rich in hope
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed
Desiring this man’s art, and that man’s scope
With what I most enjoy contented least

Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising
Haply I think on thee and then my state
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth sings hymns at heaven’s gate

For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings

Wainwright, Rufus When In Disgrace With Fortune And Men's Eyes (Sonnet 29) Comments
  1. Henry Greber

It’s *clears throat* remem-bread not ReMemBeRed

    Alan Hope

Actually as it's written, it's pronounced remember'd. You're not going to teach Shakespeare anyrthing about metre. The word is remember. In the past tense remembered, pronounced as such so no need to use the apostrophe to make remember'd. .

  2. Sarah Barbieri

    Divino.

  5. Sky Gerspacher

    My very favorite sonnet. Excellent

I first heard this sung by Rufus on a British TV celebration of the birth of this Shakespeare chap who aparently wrote the words to this song.
I have to say they are a perfect fit for Wainwright's melody and surely do bode well for his future career as a lyricist.
This version is excellent, but I admit that I do prefer the less "produced" version (live) as performed by Rufus.

  7. Lu Janis

I do not know who better interprets this music-sonnet 29th by Shakespeare's. I don't know if Florence or Rufus, because they both have the voice of an angel. I love the work of Master Rufus. He is magnificent. I can not stop listening, it's a great sound! Looks like i'm in a Shakespearean opera. Thank you Master Rufus. Congratulations again, Bravo!!👏💕😗🇧🇷

  8. Niels Nevrin Stangertz

Wow I´ve never noticed that the faces are actually Florence and Rufus!

I heard Rufus on BBC radio 5 today telling a cute story of how this collaboration with Florence began. He was relaxing by a swimming pool with his 3 year old daughter at an LA hotel when Florence appeared nearby in her bikini. His daughter pointed to Florence and said look Daddy, it's Princess Arial (from the Little Mermaid). Florence overheard this and laughed and then got chatting to Rufus who went on to suggest they collaborate on a song together.

:D Very nice. thanks for sharing.

  32. BananaAARON

Said it before and I'll say it again, the music sounds like a default MIDI track on a Casio keyboard.
