Wainwright, Rufus - Sonnet 129 Lyrics

Th' expense of spirit in a waste of shame
Is lust in action; and till action, lust
Is perjured, murd'rous, bloody, full of blame,
Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust,
Enjoyed no sooner but despisèd straight,
Past reason hunted; and, no sooner had
Past reason hated as a swallowed bait
On purpose laid to make the taker mad;
Mad in pursuit and in possession so,
Had, having, and in quest to have, extreme;
A bliss in proof and proved, a very woe;
Before, a joy proposed; behind, a dream.
All this the world well knows; yet none knows well
To shun the heaven that leads men to this hell.

    WOW ! My Wife and I saw Saw Rufus with the St Louis Symphony tonight. (Our Valentines gift to selves)
     This was no -  "pop vocalist sings with symphony"  trope.
    The SLSO arraignments where seamless, complementary and exciting. This combined performance was truly beyond all my expectations - musical excellence on the highest level.
     I was literally awestruck on some of the events in the performance tonight and now feverently hope this gets released as:    "Rufus Wainwright LIVE with the SLSO  2/16/18"  .
    I for one will be the 1st in line for that CD!

    Liz Brian

    xPump, I was at that performance - flew up from SW Florida on February 15, and home on the 17th. I have seen him perform 50+ times, from Florida to Europe to Saint Louis, Canada, and Sioux Falls. In my opinion, Rufus never disappoints and I always want more.

    I saw him last in December at Noel Nights in Montreal twice and I’ll see him next in Amsterdam in April.

  13. Noé Zamora Mejía

    Shakespeare? Neruda? Sorry... I don't understand english very well...

    Lyssa Rumble

    +Noé Zamora Mejía, it´s a Shakespeare's sonnet:

    A woman's face with Nature's own hand painted
    Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion;
    A woman's gentle heart, but not acquainted
    With shifting change, as is false women's fashion;
    An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
    Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth;
    A man in hue, all hues in his controlling,
    Much steals men's eyes and women's souls amazeth.
    And for a woman wert thou first created;
    Till Nature, as she wrought thee, fell a-doting,
    And by addition me of thee defeated,
    By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.
    But since she prick'd thee out for women's pleasure,
    Mine be thy love and thy love's use their treasure.

  22. Marcel d'Olive

    Pure poetry!

  23. geelaka

    Why does his sexual orientation even need to be an issue? The guy's an amazing talent...period!

    Alan Hope

    Sonnet 20 is one of the sonnets that lead people to think that at least some of the poems are addressed to a a male object of the poet's love, if not an actual lover. Personally, I find tihs one fairly overt, with the master-mistress of my passion line, and the last six lines of the sonnet. "And for a womaqn wert thou first created" etc.

    It's fairly well established that Rufus is gay, given that he's maried to a bloke. So this sonnet will almost certainly have touched him especially. HIs sexual orientation is an issue because it allows him to identify with the subject of the sonnet. Get off your prickly right-wing horse and think about learning something from peope who are not you.

  24. Angharad Proust

    Excellent music for Shakespeare! Excellent singer and composer, love u Rufus.

  25. Communist Hippie

    im happy hes gay. or ells he would have taken all the good girls with hes heavenly voice. and left us mediocre guys empty handed.

  26. Barbara Bannon

    , God this guy is the bizz, A voice given by god and the generousity to share it to us mortal souls. xxxxxxxx

  27. Shaun Barry

    This is all that is good about humanity.

  28. Ola Elnaggar

    But since she prick'd thee out for women's pleasure,
    Mine be thy love and thy love's use their treasure.<33

  29. Epic games

  31. deborah elliott

    @Zeno931 when you have his amount of talent you could sing a nurser rhyme and it would be brilliant . the man is agenius.

  32. smartyeh

    Dear Vevo, Let me start by saying get your corporate asses off YouTube! Ever since these big companies started paying off YouTube so they could post their freaking videos we can't post ours. We are flagged for infringement every time we include a song we like in our videos.

    This is YOUtube, the place where we can post OUR videos. If we wanted to listen to music from you wed go to your damn website.To all people who want greedy corporates gone copy and paste this

  55. Celia Moore

    Rufus has a unique talent. It's hard to put into words. It's a mixture of honesty,natural ability and good old fashion hard work. If he ever gets fed up of touring, he should take up teaching.

  56. NELL-mostly10

    This is my favourite song on the new album. A beloved sonnet takes on new life and a whole new level of melancholy. Perfection. ♥
