VNV Nation - Saviour (Vox) Lyrics

As the stars appear
I know I'll find you staring at the sky
Pointlessly reaching for some light
You hope to guide your sorry way

Your body bleeding
Your body burned
Your body scarred
Around the cinder of your heart

A God of love
A God of care
A God of hope
A God of words
A God as lost as you and blind
To fill your hollow soul again
You seek a God who stands above you
Wrapping healing arms around you
You'll find another God of pain
A God of suffering and tears

Give yourself unto your God
Sacrifice yourself again
Burn your thoughts erase your will
To Gods of suffering and tears
Tie hallowed bonds around your hands
Kneel before this seat of shame
To Gods as lost
Gods as blind
Gods of suffering and pain

  18. X.... ....

Such a song with a background it’s very touchy and talk able but one thing
Is that the song will tell you that you must stay positive and kind for god or the
Universe to give you something back like riding a bike keep on going and the universe
Will give you it. From Jesus being born in Damascus in the Middle East and god
And sacrifice I’m not a Christian and don’t know Christianity but this song has the
Meaning of you living and doing what you always do great job V nation i am impressed.

Who is listening to this 2018?

    C.... ....

@TsutomuTomutsu Its got an 80s tidday bar sound to me, but it does have a timeless quality to it.

    C.... ....

here! I started listening to VNV Nation on shoutcast streams more than 10 years ago, the most on-demand means I had to listen to these tracks were the result of stream ripping, the result is the beginning and endings being unfortunately cut with other tracks. It wasn't until pretty recently I realized VNV nation was a real thing and tracks existed clean on youtube. So yea, I'm "still" or perhaps finally listening to these in 2018 =)

  22. S.... H....

this song takes a more personal meaning if you assume you're being spoken to, instead of preaching.

  23. J.... H....

For a song about such a 'touchy' subject, the comment section is surprisingly serene and respectful. VNV-fans kind of restore my faith in humanity. I guess the whole 'Victory not Vengeance' thing wasn't so overrated after all...

    J.... H....

I consider myself to be a very spiritual person and i certainly believe in G-d. (can you tell what religion i am?) I also am not a person to beat someone over the head with it. If the interview that DukeRevolution posted above is correct then this song just got more awesome to me. Lots of terrible things have been done in the names of multiple religious groups, but some of the most charitable people also come from religious (and secular) groups. You mentioned VNV fans kind of restore your faith in humanity... and i actually say the same thing about VNV itself... that we have the ability to rise above and beyond our circumstances and we can become better versions of ourselves. VNV consistently reminds me of this.

Ronan himself said this song is not about religion. From an interview:

EBM.gr: I couldn't help thinking about your track "Saviour", which is one of my favourite tracks…

    Ronan: It's not about religion.

EBM.gr: You have a direct reference to God.

Ronan: Yes. It's a metaphorical one. In a way, the word "Guru" could have been used. There was this trend in the 60's, where people were all looking for answers, rich white kids looking for eastern answers to their life-searching questions, which was they were bored, they had no meaning. Well, fine. So money is not going to buy it but they believe that it could, they all got misguided, misled and got burned because a lot of the gurus who were taking their money were no different than them, and were lying, cheating, people who set themselves up as givers of faith, givers of answers. There were a vast number of people from, like, religious leaders, and I won't say all religious leaders, because I think, inherently within every religion is the idea "be good to one another". Almost all religions teach this. There are many cults that don't, which I find really weird. But they come back to a humanist thing which is to be kind to one another, humanism, I think is a wonderful thing. I would regard myself as a humanist, in that I have faith in human abilities, I have faith in us as a species. And we can overcome our problems.

    D.... ....

Interesting, however, I'd say that art is up for interpretation by the beholder. It's fully legitimate to interpret it in a different way.

    D.... ....

Interesting comment from Ronan. It could indeed be about cults and misleading gurus. At the same time this reminds me of the Japanese book "Silence" which takes suffering Christianity in extremes. Could be interpreted in so many ways, which is a sign of a great work!

  26. G.... ....

  28. T.... V....

Although the guy who made this is an atheist, I don't think this song is necessarily a giant "hate" on religion, as much as it is a philosophical argument. To me, the lyrics sound like it narrates the story of a man who is questioning his faith, and so chooses to stargaze and consider other religions. But the whole "god of suffering" cycle seems to suggest that the character in question never finds a faith that fits him/her. With so many countless deities to choose from, both current and extinct, how can anyone be sure one what can be true? How many gods are in reality the same being? How do we know that these beings are real? How do we know our interpretations of them are accurate? There is no answer and there never will be. Not on a universal, absolute scale. If you had to choose, you would seek a god to fulfill your needs, but how can you really choose when so many promise the same thing? Is there even such a thing as truth anymore, now that you question what you once believed? Was there ever truth?

    T.... V....

Ronan Harris is not an Atheist.

    T.... V....

    Just Enjoy the song!

    T.... V....

To me it’s a fight against darkness

    T.... V....

God you're an idiot. Ronan has personally said at least 50 times his songs are not to be taken as catholic-based. Get over it. This is not a Christian band, find new trash.

at the end of the line...god will always let you down!

  34. C.... M....

I was always under the impression that the song was about drug abuse, co dependent relationships and other such things.. a song that is about self destruction disguised as self fulfillment, about allowing weakness to overwhelm our good senses and drive us to seek something which comforts us even while defiling us.

So I suppose religion could be thrown in that as well, yes.

    C.... M....

I interpret the song very literally, the Judeo-Christian god is a monster.

  35. M.... N....

Ignorant athiests are as bad as ignorant religious fanatics. If there is a G_d and I believe that there is, it isn't Santa Claus to grant your wishes and cater to your every discomfort. Learn from life. Question anyone who tells you to take anything on faith, including the fashionable "realists" of the modern age.

  37. X.... ....

Am I the only one who feels the lyrics in this song are very anti-religious?

  38. G.... B....

Try to be a Insect...and you will be crushed without knowing. Believes without deeper meaning, just from a Fear or urge not to have Picture of this Existence is a dangerous Poision Drug that filths our Souls, and make us Tools of everyone who sells us our believes. We live in a World of unbelievable Wonders...but we are too blind to see

  39. t.... o....

This is there Best song and i know i never hear it live.

  40. r.... ....

i know the feeling of this song , just there are religous sects , and often instead of having a real knowledge of the true God , we fall for sick idols , and join the wicked. see i was myself a former "evangelist" or "born-again" christin , many things happened , and Finally I found the True God , now I am eastern Orthodox Christian , to tell you the truth it is really fullfilling and uplifting and its the real true Faith. i've been through alot , i know stuff . God bless you all

  41. V.... ....

Not trying to be critical or anything, but why?

  42. J.... F....

All you said makes sense. One can agree or not, but it really makes sense. I think their songs draw out the good and evil within the world, but even if everyone knows VNV, some people won't see that lines. And even if you see them, you have to interpretate them by yourself and set your position respecting to them.

For example, in the last days I'm getting very informed about what's happening in the world and I have a very deep question:

The people who rule the world.. are they good or evil?

  43. C.... ....

You can have the best outlook on life from listening to the songs of VNV Nation. The songs do really well to draw out the good and evil within the world. I also wish for not everyone to know VNV Nation. The world wouldn't be as fun if everyone understood the line between good and evil.

Note: This may not make sense at all. Currently intoxicated.

  44. J.... F....

If everybody knew VNV Nation we would live in a different world. It makes me feel honest at the same time it makes me feel powerful and self-confident. Some of their songs, SOMEHOW (please note the importance of that word in this phrase) traces a line between good and evil. It makes me to illuminate myself.

With no doubt, the best group I have ever discovered.

  45. s.... ....

god i hate these kind of posts

  46. b.... ....

Please re-read my comment. Seems you may have misread it or misunderstood it.

  47. V.... ....

That's a completely different song. Janus is a version of Legion, not Saviour.

  48. D.... ....

This song says to me... It is fine to believe in a cause or a person, or even to act for those reasons. To do these things is to love, but once you take it too far, you become shackled, and the path only darkens from there. Only you can prevent that, or free yourself from obsession.

  49. b.... ....

I always wonder why this isn't the one subtitled "Janus".

    Timeless. Bangin'. Tune.

  50. t.... ....

this is just to fill up the emptiness they feel inside.
i think they have more sensibility then the most.
the search (of god) it's an extreeme way that scream the terror and the fear caused by disillusion, a seek of something greater than futile life.

  51. L.... ....

This song isn't anti-religious, it's just forcing the realization that if you believe in a God, then you must also believe that God allows many bad things to happen, as well as good things and the philosophical quandaries that brings up. You can either blindly believe that there is only a God of good, or realize that the god you worship is also capable of bringing untold suffering onto people.

  52. J.... B....

I know we're all talking about the lyrical meaning and all, but can I just say how awesome the vocal effects are? Doesn't matter what they mean to me, it's just that they sound incredibly awesome! I like the deeper meaning, though, despite whatever it may be. The fact that VNV Nation adds intelligence and thought to their songs makes them my favorite band ever.

  53. u.... ....

Actually, the song is exactly about those who tie their own hands to religious belief. Never allowing doubts, fears or reason to get in the way of their "faith"

  54. z.... ....

@MoonBabyhowl Be careful in your use of "true" and "false." Whichever side may be correct, when you apply such rigid terms to them, you immediately close the mind of whoever listens. Would you enjoy someone blatantly telling you that your belief is not the truth? The way to understanding comes only through understanding, not denying.

  55. -.... T....

@VampRune you're not alone in that sentiment. nicely put.

  56. b.... ....

song gives me chills in a battle to hold what's left of my faith if any , ty 4 posting

  57. j.... y....

@SuperGeniusLife way to not make any sense

  58. V.... ....

    @SuperGeniusLife No.

  59. V.... ....

@SuperGeniusLife Wait... no one said that they like drugs, no one said anything perverted, and your grammar is so bad i can't find find anything wrong with the rest of what you said. I'm starting to question who's really on drugs here.

  60. V.... ....

@VampRune Hmm. I agree that's definitely a song about looking inward towards ones self for strength and reason than than outward to some fantasy... i'd also agree not necessarily an anti-religious song, but maybe a song against against organized religion and all the crap it brings with it? That's what i love about VNV. you can always find a way to make their lyrics meaningful to you.

  61. L.... W....

  68. b.... ....

    incredible !!!

  69. a.... ....

This song is awesome. Never it with vocals. Fuck religion and fuck god.

  70. M.... ....

@chaosarrows66 He may well be. I don't remember saying anything against the faith in and of itself, only those who use their faith to suppress and harm others. Believing something like "because I'm a Christian, I need to be like Christ and help others and be charitable and foster peace" has nothing wrong with it and is admirable. "Because I'm a Christian, I need to force other people to believe the same as me and harm people because I don't like them" is something very different.

  71. M.... A....

    @MoonBabyhowl
Very true, my marriage was destroyed by a "reborn" Christian who doesn't even see the damage in becoming a fanatic years ago!

  72. 4.... ....

This sounds like music which would be played in a 1980's titty bar.

  73. M.... A....

    totally amazing 10/10

  74. C.... J....

If you were talking about any other band I would think they were paying you to say all that.

  75. T.... ....

    vnvnation is einfach geil :)

  76. T.... ....

    Love this track!

  77. V.... ....

    thanks :-)

  78. R.... ....

I think I've just fallen in love with this song

  79. j.... ....

well it's always a false choice, but that's besides the point.

it's precisely that people have been doing that (and always will) which makes it so bad. it's one thing when you put all your faith in your car to get you somewhere important. the difference is that your car has no ego. it can't develop a complex.

god himself is that thing that fills up believers' lives. we don't try to find him in obama or in a car. he's just everywhere, period.

  80. C.... J....

I can honestly say this is one of the coolest things i've ever heard. Especially when his voice turns into a robot, I mean damn!!!

  81. V.... ....

I love this song, it has a deep meaning to me. Some people think it's a anti-religious song but I feel it's more of a self-empowering song. To not look to the outside of yourself for strength and hope but to find it within yourself and not chain yourself with hollow bonds to something that weakens you inside and out.

  82. M.... ....

I don't follow. Well, sort of. I was about to say something, but the truth is, people really have been treating him like the freaking second coming. But I don't associate with anyone that went that gaga over him. I feel he was the better choice over Skeletor and Minnie Moose, and it pissed off the fundamentalists that he got elected, so that's always nice.

  83. j.... ....

yeah. like voting for barack obama.

  84. m.... ....

well first i loved the original version of this... found the one with vocals... and loved it even more!

  85. M.... ....

I love these lyrics. Very true in certain cases.
Many people make their own version of a "God" to fill up something in their lives, but it's still empty and ends up hurting them, and hurting anyone else that tries to make them see the truth.

  86. A.... ....

    Words can't describe!
