I biked at night for hours, then out to the ocean by a lighthouse where the waves crashed against the rocks. It was a storm. I was so alone. Like a ghost to this world. VNV was in my ear. It felt as if they were speaking directly to me. Every word, then AND now describes my life, how I feel, what I think. It's like they know me though we never met. It comforted me then. I biked, ran, walked alone for years, till I was exhausted, listening to this, holding on to the hope that there is something more than this shallow world.


I'm still here today years later, still waiting to see something real, something new, and I come back to this song. It carries me. There are no words that can describe the emptiness I feel, but likewise, there are no words that can describe the affect VNV Nation has had on my life. I am forever grateful to them. Hearing their music for the first time made me feel like I could finally be seen, that someone saw through the canyon that separates me from this world, saw right into my heart and spoke to me like kin. I swear, VNV Nation is something else. I feel alive when I hear their music, I wake up and find myself again. Knowing I'm not alone gives me a reason to continue, despite this maze we are in, despite how meaningless everything seems.

The old VNV has more power and nerve. The new stuff is to soft and commercialized.

Commercialized lol. You'll never hear VNV on the radio not even their new stuff. Can't be commerical if that's not what the commercial market wants. Calling VNV's new stuff comercial sounds just like an excuse to justify not liking it. 'Control' from Automatic is much more hard-hitting powerful track than anything off Empires.

Only difference with the old stuff is that most of it is in minor key while the new stuff is major key.

+Drinko76 I think you're a little hard on the new stuff, but I do agree that the grit of the older music seems stronger to me as well. Stay devoted! Wait for remixes which may fix the problems you see. Cheers :)

Seriously, bands evolve and change over time. If you like the journey they take you as a fan, great. If you don't, maybe shut the F up and make the music you want to hear yourself.

He seems to be in an optimistic phase, songs like Streamline show that he's trying to reconcile the past and our future into a synthesis of hope. Definately their best song on the album and my 2nd favorite if it were possible to choose, but "suffer" on Reformation gives me goosebumps (no exaggeration) every time I hear it. If i had to pick a favorite Suffer would be it.

The constant banging reminds of sex and gives me a headache until the epoch of the song in the lyrics , but the banging headache beats in my head the whole time. Good stuff ! Beats are too loud though.

Shit, in 2004 this song has literally saved my life... and 7 years later, today, I need it again. It's a hidden song on Empires many opeople know nothing of, simple and monotenous... and still... there is so much in it. So deep and complex, and I cannot stop listening to it now.

The different key lines in the last 1:30 always make me smile. Most bands would have chosen one, but each of them has a different feel, and I love them all. Empires is such an amazing album.
