so grateful to my mum that I grew up with vienna teng's music. especially this song takes me back to lazy sunday breakfasts on sunny summer mornings when I was a child, not a worry in the world, just listening to this album, reading, talking, eating breakfast for hours because we just got so distracted by our books...
I love my mum so dearly and this song reminds me of her <3

Heard this song for the first time 7 years ago to the day from a song rec on tumblr, and it's still one of the most hauntingly beautiful sounds to have ever blessed my ears. The kind of music that stays with you through a lifetime. Incredible stuff.

My favorite song these days!!

vienna would be more popular if she did some pop songs and stop doing the white folk music. 

Vienna Teng is a fantastic singer-songwriter, and it irked me to the extreme to see your throwaway comment latched like an unsightly limpet at the top of the comment column for one of her songs. So I decided to write a reply. 

Most people would, in fact, classify Vienna's work as "pop music". Sure, she often weaves narratives with her songs, in the folk tradition (I'm guessing that's what you mean by "white folk music"), but musically, she's worked hard to refine a signature orchestral (or "baroque") pop sensibility. And she is becoming more popular, among her intended audience. That is, an audience that is eager to listen to the stories she tells and the lessons she teaches: an audience that takes them to heart and treasures them. I'd expect that the "niche" nature of Vienna's music has less to do with her musical idiom (pop, folk, whatever) and more to do with the lyrical complexity and narrative richness of her writing. Of course, there are degrees of accessibility, and I think Vienna has a fairly broad oeuvre, with songs ranging from easily palatable ballads ("Gravity") and love songs ("Stray Italian Greyhound") to experimental statement pieces ("The Hymn of Acxiom") and spoken word ("Passage").

Anyways, you were flippant and dismissive, so here's an overly serious and detailed response. It all balances out nicely in the end, I think. Goodbye limpet. 

@Andrew Chang I think mrzack888 is right here. I love her music and completely agree with your analysis of where her music fits, but her music is by no means 'pop'. The nature of pop is that is constantly changes with what the popular majority of people want to here. So, if Teng did a cover of 'All about that bass' she would become more popular. On a personal note, I didn't like you labeling mrzak888 as a 'limpet'.

is popularity a worthy goal? i think doing what one really wants to do --even "white folk music" - is better than selling out. popularity is often evidence of mediocrity.

Rediscovering vienna was the best thing ever

After having heard this song so many times, it was quite refreshing to hear her own explanation of the lyrics at a concert.  She said this originally referred to a bit of strife between her and her parents (years ago, I suppose).   Just one more reason to attend her excellent live performances.  She's a great storyteller in song and in plain speech.

I will second this opinion, whole-heartedly. I have now seen here on three separate occasions all at small intimate venues. She is one of those few artists who's live performances are better than her studio recordings; and those are great as well.

Vienna Teng is extraordinary. Perfect composition, fascinating subject matter. I was lucky enough to see her at Mccabe's in LA, and it's a memory I will always cherish. She understands the piano and song structure in a way that very few people do. She is vastly underrated, and I hope that changes soon. She's an incredible musician, and her art has made my life substantially better. Thank you Vienna, you deserve the utmost success.

That depends on what we're going for, her voice is the best for the music she does, but wouldn't come close to fitting many other types of music. Talent comes for genre, it does not spread.
