Velvet Underground, The - Some Kinda Love Lyrics

Some kinds of love
Margarita told Tom
Between thought and expression lies a lifetime
Situations arise because of the weather
And no kinds of love
Are better than others

Some kinds of love
Margarita told Tom
Like a dirty French novel
Combines the absurd with the vulgar
And some kinds of love
The possibilities are endless
And for me to miss one
Would seem to be groundless

I head what you said
Margarita told Tom
And of course you're a bore
But at that you're not charmless
For a bore is a straight line
That finds a wealth in division
And some kinds of love
Are mistaken for vision

Put jelly on your shoulder
Let us do what you fear most
That from which you recoil
But which still makes your eyes moist

Put jelly on your shoulder
Lie down upon the carpet
Between thought and expression
Let us now kiss the culprit

I don't know just what it's all about
Put on your red pajamas and find out

This is awesome! I'd never heard this one before... reminded me that Lou Reed worked with the Gorillaz on this tune - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KC2-EZ1ee0 which sounds some kind of similar. :-)

I'm here becasue I was reading a Christgau review of Wire's Pink Flag (I went to the page to read his review of the Wipers' Is This Real), and he says "this isn't 'Some Kinda Love' " or something, and I think of the Misfits song and I figure he's referencing some old song they got the phrase from. you know them and old stuff. so then I see it's a Velvets' song and I'm a little confused. I never made the connection before. I mean it's Some "Kinda" Love, like the 'Fits do it, not "Kind of" as the title here so... I mean "some kinda love" is pretty distinctive I think Glenn would've had to've taken it from here. which is a little different. 'course the resemblance ends there. they just appropriated everything. that's interesting though. this has been Punk Talk.

P.S. discovering the Wipers and also This Heat, and thinking of Pink Flag... then hearing this? this is the first I've felt VU were overrated. if only 'cause so much else is underrecognized..

    D.... D....

    Closet mix VS Valentin mix

  54. R.... C....

I can hear the heroin pulsing through his veins.

    R.... C....

+Ross Cicero he only took heroin a couple times. his drug was amphetamines. he gave up drugs in the 1980s

    R.... C....

    +John Shirley

He took heroin recreationally, but was never addicted to it. You can clearly hear the heroin growl in this song though.

    R.... C....

    Took heroin from 62 onwards

    R.... C....

He first shot smack when he was at Syracuse university and did it now and then thru the VU years, but I don't know about after that. He was a multiple drug (ab)user, but his main thing was shooting speed - that's what he was actually doing during the Rock 'n Roll Animal era when he notoriously mimed IVing on stage, tying off with the mic cord during Heroin.

    R.... C....

    Comrade Thoth
Interesting. There’s definitely a low growl here in his voice that wasn’t usually there.

  55. A.... C....

    Needs more cowbell !!!

  56. t.... l....

    Outstanding Love

  57. B.... O....

This is the most relaxing song I've heard in a while. It gives you that feeling of being under the sun, things are happening all around you, the view is centering in on your half smile, the times are moving, but you're sitting still, and you're content.

    B.... O....

I'm doin good baby...Good to see ya again. How's my favorite cool kitty been?? Purr-fect I hope . See ya later...........

    B.... O....

    Bol Ogenstein

    My sentiments exactly.

    B.... O....

relaxing yes, but for me, it's more like sitting on a fancy old french couch in a claustrophobic Bowery bar, looking around with passionate detachment & detached passion at friends who are now strangers, strangers who are suddenly friends, smirking, drink in hand, all enlightened & shit.

    B.... O....

    You could try heroin
    Might add to your insight

    B.... O....

And you'll get a full smile after 3:08.
We all want to kiss the culprit now

Some kinda love, Margarita told Tom
Between thought and expression lies a lifetime

Some kinda love, Margarita told Tom

And some kinds of love, the possibilities are endless
And for me to miss one would seem to be groundless

I heard what you said, Margarita heard Tom

Oooh, put on your red pajamas and let's find out
Lord rock it on, long walk really satisfies

    e.... o....

My Margarita tells me the secrets of the universe.

    e.... o....

let´s do what you fear most

  59. e.... p....

Like a dirty French novel combines the absurd with the vulgar

    e.... p....

Sauf si lou Reed parle du marquis de Sade...

  60. G.... F....

Are you ready for true love? The truth of life has been revealed and it is better than anything we could have imagined. Google "Truth contest" and click the first link.  Not everyone will be ready for the truth.

  61. b.... ....

"Between thought and expression lies a lifetime"
Amen, Lou Reed, Amen. Its easier to be theoretical than practical about our ideas and feelings.

    b.... ....

Now theoretical and practical is where the truth lies my friend.

  62. e.... p....

Amazing stuff! I feel sorry for anyone who truly loves music and has never heard this

    e.... p....

Actually, think of the joy of discovery that such a person could have in his future.....

    e.... p....

@Mike Shannon such is me :)

  63. n.... ....

I don't think I've ever heard two guitars sound better together.

    n.... ....

notcarolkaye Sterling Morrison. The warrior heart of the Velvet Underground! 😎

    n.... ....

notcarolkaye challenge accepted by good man. These guitars build so beautifully!! https://youtu.be/7FdWPeHFAMk

    n.... ....

It sounds much different to the original version, and not just the mix; it seems to be a different take and lead vocal.

    n.... ....

    Sterling was THE shit

  64. J.... ....

I prefer the closet mix.  It's moodier and more thoughtful.  This one is a bit of a bouncy crowd-pleaser

  65. C.... B....

"Between thought and expression, there lies a lifetime" - Lou Reed (in memoriam)

  66. M.... ....

Never heard until today. RIP Lou Reed

  67. l.... ....

    Thank you Mr. Reed.

  70. G.... ....

    R.I.P. Lou Reed

You will always be remembered and never forgotten!!

  71. J.... K....

Their other albums didn't exactly burn up the charts either.

  72. J.... K....

    R.I.P. Lou Reed. :(

  73. g.... ....

The Velvet Underground's self titled album is my favorite Velvet Underground album. Darn shame that the VU's self titled album was a commercial failure back in 1969.

    g.... ....

None of their albums were big hits in a commercial sense. But they're recognized now for what they truly were.

  74. S.... Y....

Some kind of style of making love...
    GOSH.. What a fucking awesome.

  75. F.... R....

Because of this song I once put jelly on my shoulder. What a weird experience.

    F.... R....

petroleum jelly on the shoulder was used so the lube is easy to reach I believe

    F.... R....

i put a jellyfish on my shoulder and it stung me like fuck

    F.... R....

i put my shoulder on my shoulder and collapsed the universe

  76. g.... n....

yes...i was just pondering that myself...fascinating...

  77. g.... n....

they sound like i'm nodding...how do they do that?

  78. T.... ....

What about nutella on your ass?

  79. M.... ....

One of my new favorite songs. I love this band, they are amazing.

  80. e.... p....

    Could be right

  81. e.... p....

What scathing tongue has mr. Reed

  82. e.... p....

Hey, they were so far ahead of their time, they were behind it. And of course you're a bore, im just kidding

  83. l.... ....

creo que Lou explica bien su bisexualidad en esta cancion

  84. E.... E....

You make me smile. THANKS! Blessings.

  87. c.... ....

But in this, you're not charmless, Mr. Reed.

  88. s.... ....

    It's like acoustic sister ray

  89. s.... ....

    isn't enthusiasm interesting?

  90. p.... ....

nooooooo!!!! Don't knock the many ooooo's!

  91. E.... ....

It's about some sort of sexual act. Some kind of love.

  92. C.... T....

    u suck

  93. J.... K....

Bizarrely enough, I was actually inspired to look this up by the Misfits' "Some Kinda Hate," which is the extreme opposite of this song.

  94. B.... ....

    your soooooo right ;)

  95. r.... ....

I just forgot this song exists, one of the best VU songs ever, thank you

  96. f.... ....

    MOIST

  97. w.... ....

"He's just trying to drink her like tequila and she doesn't like being salt thrown over his shoulder, that's what this song's about."
