Velvet Underground, The Jesus Comments
It's a hymn.
What's wrong with that ?
The singer's asking for help....
You know, for what it's worth, I hate these annoying-as-fuck Grammarly commercials w/a passion. Just sayin'
I'm here because of an angel who didn't so much fall as saunter vaguely downwards....
Wtf you want nigga??
greetings from moskou good music
It was meant to mock Christ.
it sure doesn't sound like it...
Not true at all, was written as a 3 part song about a person converting to Catholicism
His real name was Yashoeah, Ya-shoe-ahh. Jesus was a corruption of the proper pronunciation when it was translated to English to comfort King James, the English king.
One of the most sincere and subtle songs about ones' devotion to Christ I've heard. Blows most other Christian pop songs out of the water. And to think it was written by Lou Reed, a man raised as a Jew and who was by all accounts an atheist.
Yet, he wrote the perfect Gospel song. Go figure?
Wow. Such a beautiful song. Its a prayer.
Yes, I've always though so, too.
Well said!
It's incredible of how speaking about Jesus became some kind of appropriation. Isn't it possible mention Jesus without being necessarily gospel or Christian?
Amazing...like like standing in ice skates on a block in Times Square while playing the violin. I miss Lou. I remember him playing at The Second Fret in Philadelphia.
This music reminds me of my heroin years, and I've never even tried it.
I had a 20 year career as a suicide bomber ....but this taught me the error of my ways
boring fu*king album
This is strange.
Brand new discovery... this is great!
aarrh the welwets lots short sweet songs and a few long rants and poor lou artist and or pop star ( y key board does not hae ) ar the underground and y proper plae so sweet
Just a friendly reminder...lou was a jew...
So was Jesus and ALL of the very first Christians.
@Charles Martel A Judaist not a Jew by race. Jesus was not a Judaist.
That's a very nice rhyme! :) Maybe sounds a bit ambiguous to some... then, maybe, so does the song! I can imagine Lou Reed smiling.
One of the most beautiful its ever itted.
Sounds a bit cult-ey to me
I'm an atheist and love Christian music. Where almost all good music lies god is the subject
From "Heroin" to "Jesus", ain't that just how life goes?
Amen Jesus ✝️
Drug addicts, generally speaking, need Jesus in their lives. Please, read the Bible, the end of times is near....
You can't know one without the other.
He chooses the weakest witnesses. It's a flex, also He is hidden and gentle. Don't want to impose Himself by sending some noblist rock star to convert you.
jseus is cool
damn the velvet underground even predicted the mountain goats..
i love lou reed and velvet underground, but this one is orrible...
fuck up kunt you don't know what you're talking about
#butthurt
arthur daniel Pop really? this is one of my favorites
incredible :) <3
Lou, you're not even christian..
so they also invented slowcore
Yeah man, The Velvets are the most groundbreaking band of all time
There is always some dumbshit like you attaching 80s labels to older music.
I'm meltinggggg
for me is just the best and fabulous album of velvet underground
alludame geobá
as a non christian, this has really touched my soul
this not a religious song dumbass , its just irony
Hello from Singapore! I wish you'd have a amazing evening =)
This is so wholesome.
Jesus, help me find my proper place
Jesus, help me find my proper place
Help me in my weakness
Cause I'm falling out of grace
Jesus
Jesus
Doug Yule's bass and vocals are so underrated
Did he sang candy says too?
I like to listen to the song on December 25th!
Showed this to an anti-Christian punk rock dude in my teens and it pissed him off to no end. As an agnostic,I never felt more punk rock than that moment.
@Thomas B You proved my points, dumbass.
I gave a concrete example of religious freaks like you forcing your absurd fantasy even upon our damn MONEY, and basically you have no rational response other than to ignore that fact with an immature bitchy "yeah, so what?". Ever hear of freedom FROM religion? Yeah they should definitely be suing to remove religious bullshit from public land. Because that is your bronze-age fantasy religion being forced upon others, you clueless fuckwad. Nobody is burning you at the stake for your ridiculous beliefs, cupcake. Oh the horror of not having your deity on your money!
Saying "loony left wing beliefs" is a typical vague bullshit cop-out that says absolutely nothing, again. Tell me what is more completely "loony" than believing in, and praying to, an invisible magic being in the sky who watches your every move and controls your life? That is completely batshit crazy. If you had even the most basic critical thinking skills
you would be embarrassed for anyone believing that shit.
@Dan G Now I'm a religious freak? lol I barely go to church and largely consider myself agnostic. If anything, you proved the point that atheists are mostly unhinged wackos more emotionally connected to their beliefs than the religious are. If you are seriously that triggered by seeing the word GOD on a freaking dollar bill you need mental help bro. And if you actually feel the need to sue and litigate over such nonsense you're not only a mentally unbalanced nutcase you're an authoritarian but we already knew that. Sorry idiot but there is NOTHING in the constitution that guarantees anyone any freedom from religion. You can participate or not but you don't get to erase all remnants of religion from the public square.
Exactly. You are a loony left wing nutbag who has clearly replaced religious belief with your insane political views. Religion has been a key component to every society in human history you ignorant baboon. It also created the Western society ungrateful scum like you enjoy today. What have atheists created? hmm lets see. The Soviet Union, Mao's China, the Khmer Rouge, North Korea and countless other dystopian bloodbaths that came about when nihilistic atheist psychos like yourself attempted to erase religion. Go back into whatever hole you crawled out of scumbag. Let's all just hope you don't turn into another mass shooter like so many of your other mentally ill atheist brethren have.
@Dan G Lol quit being so aggressive, athiesm should be detached from hating theists, they don't actually do anything to you or me or anybody else, its the religious doctrine thats actually bad. If you want a boogeyman to fight go fight the idea of organized religion, you don't need to do much beyond protest for now as theres nothing else you can do beyond that. If you really hate religion(at least in the same way I personally do) then we just have to wait for a future where its seen not socially acceptable to believe in a religion and we can move away from a time of unneeded tradition and hate towards different minorities for basically no reason at all.
Fedoraweeb who said anything about hating “theists” you dipshit? Thanks for all your moronic rules now go fuck yourself
beautifully sad. thank you Lou Reed...
kol, documentary, with that slow motion and the blue sky,
True Beauty. Thanks Velvet Underground❤️
So beautiful.
absolutely one of the greatest. the ambiguity/irony of the velvets doing it just adds to the brilliance. Reed was crazy but so amazing.
so simple, so profound
Beauty.
What I find amazing, is that this song probably wouldn't be released, if it had been written today....I don't know whether it was the times, (60's) or Lou Reed (lyricist) songwriter....but this had to be released...especially for that generation...The generation who really appreciated it....Because success is not open to interpretation, by people who don't even appreciate it....The only people who didn't appreciate "The Velvet Underground " at the time, were the older generation...Their album sales, were not great at the time...but it didn't matter, because they were creating sonic art, warts and all,not just to sell a million records, but to have something to say.....
This is a beautiful song full of grace and feeling; much like religion and worship it will mean different things to different people - and you know what - that's to be expected and perfectly fine :)
You don't say?
Forgetting the fact that I am a proud atheist, I don't and never would have interpreted this song to be legitimately religious - when I first heard it and when I hear it now, all I can hear is sardonic, gleeful 'blasphemy' - the word 'Jesus' in this song represents to me perhaps the orgasm or/of the high, not the Son of God. Herein lies Reed's indisputable lyrical genius.
Angus McNevin
I'm sure you feel euphoric with this knowledge
is this really how you see this
You are sad
"Proud atheist"
I think this is just a song about a man seeking guidance.
The Jesus Underground
TheRollingBeachFloyd Hah, I guess you do that with all band names, Beach Floyd. the Jefferson AirLynyrd SkyN.E.R.D. .... I'll keep trying.
"For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Corinthians 12:10)
beautiful
As a Christian, I wish Christian music was as cool and amazing as this.
Morning Glory ~ some Christian music is. If you go beyond the CCM cookie cutter industry you'll find less preaching & more artistry. Ever heard of Adam Again? Starflyer 59? Morella's Forest?
Try Spiritualised
But since Lou was God, I think he has good authority to sing this!
As a Christian, you should be a bit more aware, and a lot less dismissive of the hope and fact that there is an immense volume of inspiring, majestic, and flat out amazing music, spanning several centuries, however "cool". Seek and ye shall find. Knock and it will be opened to you...
@D. Williamson Since Lou Reed is indeed God, it's great that he's so cool
On the other hand, when this was written, Christian rock did not exist. Jesus Christmas superstar and godspeed were still in the near future. Gospel, whether southern, black, or bluegrass were a separate demographic entirely from rock music of any kind.
lol this would be such a great worship song for any Christian church to play.
with or without irony? Sweet.......jane?
The only thing that really makes this song goth is that this is Lou Reed, the same band that did the song heroin and venus in furs doing a perfectly normal version of a christian song. I keep waiting for the bomb to drop but it doesn't.
+Hugh Danielson Jerk
lol velvet underground isn't goth. this song was written by lou himself
lou wrote this song, and I think it would make perfect sense if he meant this song literally. Think about it, he was was a very broken person, and Christ is the embodiment of understanding and forgiveness. But whatever he meant, may he rest in peace.
Otz so got
Love the way Reed and Yule's voice sound together.
They would have been so great together...
This version is actually in Talihina Sky. The Kings of Leon documentary.
The only thing that would have been better would be if it said "honorable prophet Mohammad help me in this evil western modern society help me find my Koran, I've seemed to have misplaced it."
Isil for the win yuall
+collj86 you can change lyrics to fit yr beliefs I guess
You really are a mindless idiot.
Shut up you white drunk childish man
Beautiful song, no matter the intention
Exactly
@Christopher Robitaille
I presumed the intention was reverence.
My morning prayer/hymn
im gonna make this my morning prayer too- I play it over and over sometimes because once you have played this everything else sounds coarse. took me decades to realise this is the best of the vu catalogue and I love all their material.-nice comment mr beres
Hashem, Hashem, help me find my proper place!
fack jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew
Haunting song with a resonance and special meaning for those of us who know 'we've fallen out of grace'!
+Peter O'Brien Know or think? ;)
Klovis same things.
I feel ya but as a Christian, I don't believe anyone can ever "fall out of grace". The mercy & acceptance of Christ is endless. Nothing can seperate us from the love of God. Romans 8: 18-39.
