Vega, Suzanne - World Before Columbus Lyrics

If your love were taken from me
Every color would be black and white
It would be as flat as the world before Columbus
That's the day that I lose half my sight

If your life were taken from me
All the trees would freeze in this cold ground
It would be as cruel as the world before Columbus
Sail to the edge and I'd be there looking down

Those men who lust for land
And for riches strange and new
Who love those trinkets of desire
Oh they never will have you

And they'll never know the gold
Or the copper in your hair
How could they weigh the worth
Of you so rare

If your love were taken from me
Every light that's bright would soon go dim
It would be as dark as the world before Columbus
Down the waterfall and I'd swim over the brim

Those men who lust for land
And for riches strange and new
Who love those trinkets of desire
Oh they will never have you

And they'll never know the gold
Or the copper in your hair
How could they weigh the worth
Of you so rare

World before Columbus; Peaceful, No kill and No War.

  3. W.... W....

Columbus was a genocidal piece of shit.

This song always made me think of my late husband. A couple of months before his sudden death, I played it for him so he would understand how much I loved him. I am so glad he knew....he’s been gone since 2013 and I will never be the same without him.

    B.... T....

    Beautiful words.

I'd love to hear a version of this gorgeous song with her vocal less "processed." Something is going on with the effects on her voice that make it sound a little weird to me. A great tune nonetheless.

11rockiton video of her singing this song live on YouTube channel honestrobsusedvideos 🇬🇧☔️☕️

Suzanne is a poet with a voice.

She's a great artist. Strange, moody, oddly compelling, and deep. I wish she lived next door. We could have coffee. Hell, I wish she lived here.

  9. R.... F....

In my opinion probably one of the most beautiful songs ever written or performed.

  10. P.... ....

Alwways catch my breath to this song

  11. M.... E....

Truly a tear-jerker, but if you want another song about daughters, try "Little Green" by Joni MItchell.

COLOMBUS ISLAND (SAN SALVADOR BAHAMAS) HERE I COME.

When/if I have a child, I think this would make a lovely lullaby. Wonderful song, wonderful artist <3

    m.... ....

    @memmi I agree ! SV is unique

    m.... ....

+memmi Did you know Vega actually wrote it for her daughter when she was born? It is a lullaby. Good ear!

  14. P.... D....

    Love it.

This song was released in the mid 1990's and was a song Suzanne wrote about
her then young daughter Ruby. The song relates how Suzanne would feel if she lost
her.  Its a very touching, and moving song.  Suzanne made another song about
her daughter on her 2007 "Beauty & Crime" album, entitled "As You are Now",
which is a kind of follow up to that first song, revealing the close bond between them

Suzanne's songs are pure poetry. The first time I ever listened to this song I swore she'd written it to a man. Now that I know the lyrics are inspired on his daughter I love this song even more. I hope one day I'll be able to sing this song to my future son or daughter.

@N0eWats0n Yes this is a beautiful song she wrote about her then young
daughter.  She made another song about her now almost grown up daughter
called "As you are now"  Taken from her "Beauty & Crime" album.  This also
is a beautifully written song.  I prefer the acoustic version of it from her 4 disc
Close Up collection.  Take a listen, like you say its like poetry set to music.
I have been a fan of Suzanne's music since the late 80's and have seen her
perform "Live" twice.  She is truly amazing.

+Gary Dunn It's great love song, you can adopt it or just listen to the sentiment as it was written.

  16. c.... H....

    Great song.

  17. E.... B....

she has such a sweet voice, shes so fortunate x

  18. I.... ....

    Illuminatie "all seeing eye"

    I.... ....

wrong, that's the right eye covered, was she mocking them!

  19. l.... ....

I love this album but I think it's a little marred by Mitchell Froom's production.

  20. p.... ....

Suzanne can drown us all with that honey voice. great woman, great artist.

  21. g.... ....

One of the things I love about this song is that it was written for her daughter.

  22. P.... C....

what a tenderness in her voice..

  23. A.... ....

    Thank you!

  24. r.... ....
