Van Zandt, Townes - No Lonesome Tune Lyrics

I ain't gonna sing no lonesome tune
Ah, babe, I'm a-commin' soon
I cannot believe I stayed so long away
But a man must look around
And you're the sweetest thing I've found
Your lost high roller's rollin' home today

My daddy said to me
son, it's hard as you will see
To find someone upon whom to rely
In the kitchen mama sneezed
And he grinned big as you please
Said bless you and a tear come to his eye

I did decide that very day
That I would like to live that way
And now I know I just been wastin' time
It's with you that I should be
If you feel the same 'bout me
I'm headed home along the straightest line

I never knew about this song. I heard it recently by Jimmie Dale Gilmore. I loved it. Then I heard Townes sing it. I love it more. I can play this song over and over! Everything about it is perfect. The music, the voice, and the words! I never listened to his music. And, I learned WHO he was, only because the other singers/songwriters always mentioned his name.

I just goggled this song with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and you are right it was great . There is another version with Willie Nelson and Townes . Really good too .

@212729h Yes, I have the Willie Nelson and Townes version. Willie was exceptional. I have always thought that sometimes he changes melody too far, and that he generally doesn't blend great with others. But on this one with Townes, Willie did a fabulous job.

I just found another version with Townes with Guy Clark . Live performance and the music was more up tempo . Great performance .

I first heard the album "The Late Great Townes Van Zandt" when I was an undergraduate a good many years ago (more than 30). I was immediately transfixed by Van Zandt's lyrics and his ability to capture what I felt was the heart and soul of central Texas music as I had come to know it. Townes was the master, and it will be a very long time before there will be another song writer of his stature. I saw him many times before his death (Jan. 1, 1997). Miss you, Townes.

Bruce, I think Townes died Jan. 1 1997. Thank for your post, Lyle

    B.... D....

Yes, I did mean 1997. Corrected.
