Van Zandt, Townes - Big Country Blues Lyrics

Well, I been up the Mississippi to the Manitoba line
I've been downstream to the Gulf of Mexico
Followed the sun out west to Californ
And there just ain't no place left for me to go

Spent a lonesome month in Maine and a year in Louisian
Packed my bags and hit the Westward Trail
Rambled down through Texas 'til I came to El Paso
Spent a week in a stinkin' Juarez jail

Well, I rambled through Nevada gamblin' most of my life away
I headed north when I heard Dakota call
Well, I stayed until the Northers came rollin' down the line
I headed south when summer turned to fall

I've been north and east, south where the cotton grows
And out in the west where the sun forever shines
Well, I've bent my back for a dollar a day in a Texas sugar field
Labored in a Minnesota mine

Well, I've seen your hungry babies scream, I watched their mamas cry
Seen a worn out prostitute beg for a dime
I've seen men come out of gutters ready to give their lives away
For a slug at a lousy bottle of rot gut wine

I've been up the Mississippi to the Manitoba line
Downstream to the Gulf of Mexico
Followed the sun out west to Californ
And there just ain't no place left for me to go
Well, there just ain't no place left for me to go

Van Zandt, Townes Big Country Blues Comments
  1. G.... ....

Hell i love the pictures of life in peoples face

  2. J.... B....

    Great song.

But btw most of these people on photos look like they have medium to severe vitamin deficiencies esp B1 and minerals.
Just google beri beri- B1 deficiency
Of course it seems like they have/had less advanced deficiencies, but some of them also hypothyroidism( fat neck, swollen face)
Look how weak is their hair.

Being ugly or sick doesn't mean its your real 'beauty' people often look bad or 'ugly' because of malnutrition( not to be mistaken with just eating too little)

The same with depression or mental illness.

  3. j.... s....

Every face has a lifetime of stories to tell.

  4. p.... ....

When you've walked the same road as someone you didn't even know was walking that road at the time. Thanks Townes for putting it to music and verse.

  5. f.... m....

Good Lord ! Have you seen the prices for this particular work of Avedon? I count myself lucky to see them here with such an appropriate accompaniment. Van Zandt and Avedon ...Wow.

  6. r.... ....

Set playback speed 1.25 , sounds much better :)

  7. S.... S....

Looks alot like many of the homeless I see on the streets of the city I live-Oh btw Townes another cheerful little ditty as Guy would say

  8. d.... ....

They all have the same crazy eyes

  9. W.... R....

Every one of these photographs tells a story. The photographer is an absolute master at his art.

  10. W.... R....

One of Townes’s most powerful songs accompanied by one of the most powerful video montage I’ve ever seen.

  11. T.... M....

    Real people. Real poor people.

  12. O.... H....

Jim Carey was in dem pics

    S.... A....

    Thank you

  16. g.... a....

At 0:53 theres trevor philips in real life 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

  17. S.... C....

These poignant portraits make me think so much to Dorothea Lange's portraits of Oklahoma farmers during the Depression... And this beautiful song brings me back to Springsteen's "Ghost of Tom Joad"...

  18. M.... H....

    Captivated by the photos

  19. s.... ....

I've watched this several dozen times over the last few years. Every time something goes wrong, I watch it and it reminds me how fortunate I am compared to so many others. The song is great, the photos are great, but whoever married the photos to the music was truly inspired. The result is extraordinarily powerful and timeless. Thank you.

    s.... ....

I was feeling pretty lousy but after this feeling pretty lucky

  20. c.... e....

phenotypic ratios is all I can think of.

  21. P.... M....

Faces are worth something, Sigourney Weaver.

  22. b.... b....

This is what makes me love Americans again, despite culture gaps and politics. Thank you for this song.

  23. W.... ....

An anecdote about Townes I particularly like, and which might even be true, is that when someone asked him why he didn't ever sing "happy" songs, he responded "these ARE my happy songs." :))

  24. J.... H....

For me, it doesn't get any better than this

  25. 2.... C....

    Fantastic video!

  26. b.... j....

Seems like I know the people in pictures ...

  27. r.... h....

townes voice haunts me.. he makes me wanna do something good..

  28. J.... L....

Best collection of portraits I have seen.
Those idiots cracking on about white privilege have never lived among the poor, working whites. MAGNIFICENT SONG AND VID.

    J.... L....

you started off strong in the first sentence. after the second sentence you became unhinged. the third sentence brought you back to reality

    J.... L....

@J Q Well done, you got a 'Highlighted reply' Algorhythms love the Woked.

    J.... L....

@J Q Funny, he got two out of three...you were lame all the way through.

  29. m.... ....

    Appreciate the images. Thx.

  30. l.... ....

It would be great to have Taylor Swift make a cover version of this song.

  31. P.... B....

From a time when songwriters were true and honest artists, and not whores, like today's pop star hacks.

  32. E.... ....

He saw us as we were.

  33. H.... A....

    Dende galicia:
Gardeina na lista de music. E logo pensei... Tamen na de cine. Fai lembrar que existen infinitos rostros. Gracias a todos

    Graciñas

  34. b.... 6....

These faces and these arms have built your nation.

  35. g.... b....

Can anybody imagine life without crystal meth, or iPhones

    g.... b....

Sure wish we could start w getting rid of meth. Its eaten up alot of brains w moms and dads and kids homeless or dead bc of

  36. h.... ....

    That's dense.

  37. B.... O....

    this is the truth

  38. J.... D....

A lot of eyebrows here and lack thereof

  39. A.... P....

    Who is the photographer?

  40. M.... E....

Always frustrating to hear someone pronounce Nevada wrong, great songwriter or no.

  41. t.... b....

More beauty in every photo than there is in the entire Instagram selfie catalogue.

  42. h.... ....

Just found Townes and I realise what I have been missing my whole life. He tells it as it is. Raw and sublime

    h.... ....

Oh man there is none as transparent even if some of the songs were not lived by Townes he knew the woes of humanity

  43. B.... A....

    Great song

  44. T.... W....

  49. Z.... G....

  50. I.... F....

No copyright: While In the American West is one of the Avedon's most notable works, it has often been criticized for falsifying the West through voyeuristic themes and for exploiting his subjects. Critics question why a photographer from the East who traditionally focuses on models or public figures would go out West to capture the working class members who represent hardship and suffering. They argue that Avedon's intentions are to influence and evoke condescending emotions from the viewer such as pity

  51. M.... P....

    By who are these photographies?

  52. S.... ....

How 'bout some credit for Richard Avedon's photos?

    S.... ....

I'm glad you said that, I was wondering what the pictures were from.

    S.... ....

@Ger Hew His book the American West I think. Good stuff, eh?

    S.... ....

Yep, "In The American West" is the book

  58. M.... ....

Awesome song.I wish we had someone like Zandt in my generation.

    M.... ....

Give this guy a listen -- no one has heard of him, but I can't get enough of his lyrics https://seankeel.bandcamp.com/track/the-rungs-in-between

  59. m.... ....

The man at 1:54 had crazy eyes for sure.

  60. R.... S....

The thing with Townes songs is you never question what his singing about.
You KNOW in your very bones his lived what he sings about.

  61. d.... ....

There just ain't no place left for me to go...

  62. m.... ....

The guy at 3:02 makes me want to cry.

  63. m.... ....

Looks and sounds like helplessness and hopelessness.

  64. J.... S....

This is a hero man! When the men and woman that have the power to shut you down respect you ... that makes you and them heros!

  65. B.... L....

Faces full of roadmaps going nowhere grit dirt grime reality of the dammed beautiful like a summer storm

  66. W.... M....

TOWNES VAN ZANDT - a hell of a song writer, this man. Aint no two ways about it. Man could sing. Man could play. And he wrote this fine song, DEAD FLOWERS". By the way, he wrote "Pancho and Lefty", too. Gotta love him! And I do.

  67. F.... G....

Powerful feelings through this one ....

  68. A.... J....

    Beautiful

  69. J.... D....

All these people are as beautiful, and sad, as this song.

  70. T.... T....

    The people that build America

  71. b.... c....

Just when you think yt is a waste of time, you find this gem...

  72. J.... P....

There’s only cover songs on SoundCloud

  73. A.... I....

Honestly first time i heard this man was because True Detective, yes, and although i'm European i'm pretty much into, well, i can't say AMERICAN music, but i really like to dig for blues, country, etc singers less popular outside of US. But from what i was able to conclude, Van Zandt didn't got deserved attention in his time, not even in the US? How the hell.

    A.... I....

Misunderstood genius with a self destructive streak. Check out John Prine also.

    A.... I....

Just to say, thanks like hell for John Prine

    A.... I....

@Aljosa Ilic John Prine is a national treasure, he has a new album which is very good. Check out Blaze Foley (If I Could Only Fly) another semi tragic Texas songwriter. For some reason Texans really Get the blues. Must be somethin' in the water. :-)

  74. S.... M....

Nadine Ropp, I completely agree he was very talented and underrated. Great tune and great pics!

  75. S.... R....

    Sung by a real singer/songwriter

  76. A.... B....

What's with all the photos of inbreeds

    A.... B....

You're obviously a case for forbidding cousins to marry.

  77. J.... S....

    Photographs are by Richard Avedon.

    J.... S....

Avedon was a master photographer, check out his photo shoot of the Beatles.

  78. N.... K....

wow, what a bunch of angry looking people. hey nadine i agree with you

  79. D.... M....

    splendide

  80. J.... ....

Where did you get these photos?

  81. V.... B....

This series of photos photos by Avedon feels like he peaked up from where Mike Disfarmer stopped (amazing work too, highly recommended to those who might not have heard of him), and they work beautifully with the poetry of Townes Van Zandt.

  82. E.... O....

I didn't realize what a beautiful voice he has.

  83. s.... p....

that series of images caring so, of whom and who by?

  85. k.... ....

    It's the eyes. The eyes.

  86. D.... ....

    heartbreaking

  87. S.... T....

A tale of rough hewn, hardscrabble people just trying to make it through the day with their souls intact.  Great song by a legend!

    S.... T....

Get a copy of Live at Folsom Prison and be amazed.  Cocaine Blues alone of that album will destroy you.  The San Quentin Prison album is just as good.  There's also a ton of other absolute classic Cash records to hear, including he American Recordings during the end of his career and life.  Recommending one song for such a major figure in music history seems wrong.

    S.... T....

@Sinner TrainYea, I've heard all that.

    S.... T....

Go listen to "God's Gonna Cut You Down."  If that doesn't convince you then it's just a matter of personal taste I guess.

    S.... T....

@Sinner Train I'm not shitting on The Man in Black, that's blasphemy but I like Townes. Im glad I came across a passionate fan like yourself though.

    S.... T....

Loving music that speaks to you is ALL that matters.  Listen on!

  88. c.... p....

    ..excellent photos! )

  89. A.... ....

    Brilliant, brilliant all day long

  90. T.... R....

  91. J.... M....

Powerful images of Richard Avedon accompany this song. Perfection.

  92. M.... M....

facce VERE per un testo VERO - GRANDE!!!

  93. J.... A....

    White privileged folk

    J.... A....

Jim Adlington Lol, They ran the well dry on "white privilege" I guess.

  94. C.... B....

His voice is full and rich. Lyrics poetry. The photographs in the video were sublime choices.

  95. D.... M....
