This is a beautiful performance/recording. I often prefer Townes with just his voice and guitar, that directness and intimacy; the space. However this particular version is delicate, empathetic, ethereal, perfect.

Never heard this version. But there is another that starts with a beautiful violin (look it up, that too is beautiful).

Where is this version from and why does he sound younger than said album?

I am so overwhelmed by Townes that it makes me believe that perfection actually exists and it's a slightly weird feeling... listening to Townes is possibly the most desirable thing on this Earth.

I come back to this every few months or so, and have for a while now. I still forget to breathe when TVZ starts to sing this poetry.

I am struggling emotionally. Have had tecumseh valley on repeat. I feel like Caroline.Dreams that didn't come true. Than this song came on. I have never heard.. I was just recently introduced to Townes. I am just in a puddle of tears. This song is beautiful.

Art is an interesting thing, some debate it and sometimes nobody does because it goes without saying. TVZ is so wonderful that if anyone claims otherwise they come off sounding foolish.

a man who had this much talent and passion for music deserved more credit and recognition. it truly is a shame that we r losing great musicains who write their own music. PEOPLE MAY NOT LIVE FOREVER BUT LEGENDS NEVER DIE

Having met and admired Townes for a few years, I still do some of his songs in my show. Guy Clark introduced me to Townes in the late 1960s. I will be forever grateful.... J.T.R.

That's awesome! I would have loved to have gotten to meet Townes! Especially would've liked to have had the chance to hang out with him. He seemed like a good fellow, and from years of listening to his song's, I kinda feel as if I do know him. He is certainly one of the greatest songwriters of all time. (And I do mean in the top 2 or 3, if not the greatest!) Very few songwriters are on the same level of lyrics writing as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, but that's exactly where Townes is. He was for sure a legend..., a "songwriter's songwriter", and a true poet.

Michael H. I'd say Cohen 1, Dylan maybe 2, tvz conceivably three but just conceivably. Fortunately for us there's plenty of competition.

@Rs 225 I would have Townes right there with Cohen, but that's just my personal opinion. Paul Simon would probably make my top 5 list of lyric writers too.

For some strange reason I'm closer in musical sense to Guy Clark than to Townes, but nevertheless...these boys are true greats. This song (and this version of song particularly!) is special to me.

Now that's the motherlode of victories. You don't need any more; Townes was the best. I saw him perform back in the early 1980s. Super glad that a new generation is discovering his talents.

it's originally from the recordings for the unrealesed "Seven Come Eleven" (so around 1974). An album that eventually appeared on CD as "The Nashville Sessions", but that CD is hard to get these days. I have a copy :)

Love townes van zandt but really dislike the production on his albums.His songs dont need to be backed up by all these instruments they're good enough as they are.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. For those curious, this particular track is off the Be Here To Love documentary soundtrack. There's some great live versions of some of his best songs and even some cool audio clip interviews. It's real favorite of mine.
