Not sure if this is the answer you were looking for :) (but my take is_)
He has the ability to convey his magical musical talent through his songwriting with his incredible powerful interesting voice which is in perfect key (if he chooses it to be)and sing it in such a way like no one else can(its the way he sings a line) and play a heap of musical instruments of which he does masterfully, for me hes the best musician ever cos of this and just the simple fact his songs are bloody awsome to boot. Also the fact he has very good musicians around him and excellent backup singers, which makes the whole deal work.

The Mystery (in my opinion) is why more people aren't listening to Van Morrison.

Have always heard a few of his songs but did not realize his great talent! And did not know rod Stewart sang some of his songs!

About five years ago, after years of hearing how good it was, I finally got around to watching (binge watching) the tv show, The Wire.  That is when I heard the song, "Fast Train" by Solomon Burke. It blew me away, and I listened to it repeatedly.  Then one day I thought to myself, "hey that sounds a lot like Van Morrison".  I googled the song, and sure enough, VM wrote it.

To PHILLIP, That Fleetwood mac song that you asked me about Mar15 (two days ago) just appeared in Google +. It says someone blocked it because of copyright protection. I never got your query on you tube.

+Phillip McConnochie , He's always had a great voice to me too except his version of Blowin in the Wind. PP&M sounded so much better. Thanks for offering me those MP3 Hayes songs. But I don't even know what MP3 is. If I'm determined, I can find that music on You Tube. I found a duplicate of that great WHO video I mentioned before. I would tell you the name of the guy who uploaded it but I don't remember. Hopefully it will be at least a year before they remove that video. I don't understand how one guy can have a video that has been free to run on You Tube for months or years, then suddenly be removed, while at the same time somebody else has the same video yet it is still running?

+Phillip McConnochie , Thanks for all of those downloads. I especially liked Johnny Cash's version of the Ira Hayes song. I was never a Johnny Cash fan or follower but after listening to Cash sing that song, his voice sounded so good and so did the song. No wonder why Cash was such a super star.

Van's Dad was an avid record collector so Van had many many great songs to listen to when he was just a toddler about age 4. Is this why he is such a brilliant song writer or did one or both of his parents just give him a rare unique gift? While his Dad was an avid record collector, his Mom was a popular professional jazz singer. Many avid record collectors are people who have a great aptitude for music and could have been great musicians themselves but they just didn't know it. Combine his father with his mother and those are pretty good music genes.

Both professionals teach their sons and now a days daughters what it is like to be a Doctor or Lawyer while they are growing up such that so many know as early as age 13 that that is what they are going to do after their SCHOOL DAYS are over with. They not only KNOW a lot about their future professions long before they are age 18 but they BELIEVE that they can excel as a Doctor or a Lawyer. Many people who consider being a Doctor or Lawyer fail to become one because they falsely BELIEVE that they aren't smart enough. Movie actors become directors because they see what a director does and they say to themselves "I can do that". Many students watch their teachers and say to themselves, "I can do that!"

I always found this song to be beautiful and it always took me to a calm, wonderful place whenever I listened to it.  But back in 2006, this song took on a different meaning for me.  My young, beautiful, vibrant 36 year old wife and soul mate suddenly suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage due to a ruptured brain aneurysm.  She was soon declared brain dead, and I had to make the decision to take her off of life support.  Myself and other family members gathered around her hospital bed and said our final goodbyes.  I always imagined her hearing this song as she let go of this physical world and entered the light of the spiritual world.  I can't help but shed tears when I hear this song.  And when it's my turn to depart this physical world and reunite with her in the spiritual world, I can only hope there is beautiful music like this playing in the background.

Sam Cooke is on the radio! Van's dad had a great collection of music and Van has worked hard but there's no doubt he has the gift and the muse.

I quite agree though he also re-work and re-use a lot. For instance here the refrain's melody is the same as in haunts of ancient peace
