Van Morrison - Got To Go Back Lyrics

When I was a young boy
Back in Orangefield
I used to gaze out
My classroom window and dream
And then go home and listen to Ray sing
"I believe to my soul" after school,
Oh that love that was within me
You know it carried me through
Well it lifted me up and it filled me
Meditation contemplation too

[Chorus:]
Oh we've got to go back
Got to go back
Got to go back
Got to go back
For the healing go on with the dreaming

Well there's people in the street
And the summer's almost here
We've got to go outside in the fresh air
And breathe while it's still clear
Breathe it in all the way down
To your stomach too
And breathe it out with a radiance
into the nightime air

We've got to go back etc. etc...

Got my ticket at the airport
Well I guess I've been marking time
I've been living in another country
That operates along entirely different lines
Keep me away from porter or whiskey
Don't play anything sentimental it'll make me cry
I've got to go back my friend
Is there really any need to ask why

We've got to go back etc. etc...

\When I was a young boy back in Orangefield I used to look out my classroom window and dream and then go home and listen to Ray sing "I believe in my soul" ( we Americans then went home and watched American Bandstand on TV every night after school) until The Beatles created 10 times American Bandstand shows, hence American Bandstand had to move to Saturday's at noon. Was that the same Johnny Ray who during XMAS 1956 had a big boring song titled "Just walking in the rain". That doesn't sound like Van music or my kind of music but he sure liked this guy by the name of Johnny Ray.  Anyway Johnny Ray's popularity started to go south during the late 1950's. Get these words from this song: "ALL THOSE PEOPLE IN THE STREET, AND SUMMERS ALMOST HERE,GOT TO GO OUTSIDE IN THE FREST AIR AND WALK WHILE IT'S STILL CLEAR" BREATHE IT IN ALL THE WAY DOWN TO YOUR STOMACH TOO, AND BREATHE IT OUT WITH A RADIANCE INTO THE NIGHT TIME AIR..... Got to go back..........

  22. T.... D....

One of his best... Can't get enough of this

  23. a.... m....

When Van entered Orangefield he was 12 and had a guitar for about a year and learned a few chords and KNEW then he was going to be a pro musician and formed his first band at the age of 12. He quit Orangefield School at age 15 because he knew his dreams while looking out the window was for him to be a pro musician. He struggled after he quit school only briefly. His Dad said boy if you are going to live with us then you better go find a job which he did as a window cleaner which he alluded to in his great 1982 album with a cut called CLEANING WINDOWS. But his skills as a musician just grew so much that he formed a band called THEM and he never looked back after that.

  24. a.... m....

Got to go back, way way way before the days of rock n roll. When you trusted your parents to be the two smartest people on earth. I myself got a sucker after getting my hair-cut. That was nice. They don't give me suckers anymore after I get my haircut.  It never turns out very good, you'd think that they at least would give me a free sucker. The world has changed so much since the days before rock n roll. Even the NY Yankees don't win the pennant every year like they did during the days before rock n roll. What traditions have changed that you have noticed since the days before rock n roll. The best NOSTALIGIC SONG by Van Morrison is called" ON HYNDFORD STREET ."Check it out on You Tube. It's even better then this great song. I love where he says after spending a day out in Hollywood (in Belfast) coming home feeling WONDEROUS AND LIT UP INSIDE WITH THE SENSE OF EVERLASTING LIFE!" Got to go Back.

+Phillip McConnochie , Thanks for those three links. I just listened to On Hyndford Street on You Tube. Those were nice pictures. That music is as pretty as music can get. I'm thinking 1955, Van was 10 then. 1 1/2 years before Elvis. Such great words to go with that pretty music and I don't even live in Belfast or Ireland. One of the three songs, Pagan Streams I once owned but it was one of those songs that I kept skipping because there were so many other great songs on that album to listen to. I saved it so that I can listen to it later. Thanks again.

That line 'we could dream and keep bees and live on honey street' I know van is close to a genius (if he isn't already) but man what a terrific line, he can write songs sing majestically play great but comes up with these words of wisdom.

You got to hear that album NO GURO, NO METHOD, NO TEACHER, JUST YOU AND ME AND NATURE, AND THE SON, AND THE FATHER AND THE HOLY GHOST IN THE GARDEN WET WITH RAIN....................... That was the title cut of the album," No Guro No Method, No Teacher" but the whole album was even better then the title. Just yet ANOTHER super gift from Van Morrison. At least listen to NO GURO NO METHOD NO TEACHER which you can probably find to the right.

I have the album ... may very favourite along with Astral weeks ... have them on my phone too.... my go to albums when I need a recharge...

    a.... m....

His best album in my opinion.

When I was a young boy back in Orangefield I used to look out my classroom window and dream. I used to do that too. That was way back in 1957. The first year that I set foot in my very old school building built in about 1907 ( and to a 6 year old it looked very very old) after the original school building built in about 1897  was hit by lightning and burned down to the ground. It was 1957 when Van's school was a brand new school.  I think in 2014 it was declared a old building and was torn down. Van gave a free concert there in 2014 when they tore his old "school days" building down. It's just strange today, how people out live buildings. I remember when buildings outlived people. Not any more, today any building built in the 1980's is considered old and a danger to people as a piece of the building may fall on you and kill you. This song is a obscure and beautiful song by VAN! I wish I would have looked out my classroom window and dreamed as big as Van did!

+Phillip McConnochie , Hi Phillip. For some reason finding Dylan's original songs are so much more difficult then any other artist. I just wrote down those two songs that you mentioned and will check them out soon. As far as "God on our Side", it's a great song but he is almost talking, even I could upload a great version of that song but I 'm not computer savvy and don't know how to upload songs. BTW Dylan does a very good live version of Visions of Johanna uploaded by someone by the name of Dave Johnson. The vocals are filled with beautiful words, phrases and poetry, this version is almost better then his original on Blond On Blond as he plays a lot of guitar that wasn't on the original. Again it was uploaded by someone by the name of Dave Johnson. Also from his 1978 LP STREET LEGAL a man by the name of George Kartsonakis does in my opinion a great version of BABY PLEASE STOP CRYING. His version is great but for some reason he won't let his head appear on the video. I don't think that he is ugly, just shy probably. In case that you haven't seen or heard these two great songs I just mention them for you to check out in case you would like them like me. Thank you for your positive comment. Positive comments make me feel good, insults make me act like a one year old but I'm learning at the age of 66 to not behave like a one year old. It worked 65 years ago but just gets me in more trouble today.

+alan murr yeah, um well I have some links to some dylan songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=cAgAvnvXF9U&list=WL&index=1 , (unfortunately its only half the song but for me its his best version)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCipKmyngLY&list=WL&index=2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ca7xMkWZuc&list=WL&index=5 AND I MADE A GOOD 'BALLAD OF IRA HAYES' VIDEO BUT YOUTUBE TOOK IT AWAY its from the album songs from th thrift ' except you cant find it anywhere , there are 3 other beauty's on this 'they killed him', Early morning rain .

    I'm terribly alone.
    Ive loved Van's poetry/music since I was a boy.
I appreciate you're stories and comments, all mature and intelligent and quite simply Human.
You've made me feel a wee but more valued you're like brothers and sisters to me.
I was born in Belfast in 1962 to two War children, two very broken people, they're gone now and it's hard to let go.
Van Morrison is our soul brother.
